Well of course dragons come in storms, their dragons! There is no subtlety in their arrival, no warning, no patience. Just a massive storm of rage and destruction cascading from the sky in a fiery blaze. The initial cost of this card is completely expensive, but when combined with suspend, well I think we all know what happens then, thats right, DRAGONS!

Wow, I would really love to try to build a deck around this. So...awesome...

Sure, you'd need some mana gainers, but black/red are pretty good for that.

Turn 1: Mountain
Turn 2: Swamp + Dark Ritual + Dark Ritual + Dark Ritual + Dark Ritual + Spellbook + (Any creature that costs 'B') + Dragonstorm.

7 Dragons in play by turn 2, Alright, not the most likliest of draws ever, but this is cold hard powergaming - little things like Statistics won't get in our way! =D

★★☆☆☆ (2.7/5.0) (5 votes)
Mountain + Rite of Flame + Rite of Flame + Rite of Flame + Rite of Flame + Grapeshot + Dragonstorm
5 devidable damage and 6 Dragons in play by turn 1 (and an empty hand).
Like DarkbladeWraith said: "not the most likliest of draws ever, but this is cold hard powergaming - little things like Statistics won't get in our way! =D"
Using Desperate Ritua and Seething Song also helps

Flavorful to the core, gamebreaking when used in the right deck, a deck-enabler in essence, this card has everything you want from a card.

Don't forget that Dragonstorm was one of the best deck during Time Spiral-legal Standard, powered by mana-gainers like Rite of Flame, Seething Song and Lotus Bloom, cheap library manipulation ala Telling Time (love this card!), Sleight of Hand, and Mishra's Bauble, and dirty tricks like Gigadrowse. It was really one hell of a deck!

I need a little help, I last played wan urza's saga was new. I was playing a friend who uesed this card, and I counter it, he says the storm still go's, and I'd need a counterspell for all the storms. Is that right?
BelloAbril
★★☆☆☆ (2.7/5.0) (3 votes)
Lotus bloom, cabal ritual, rite of flame, dark ritual, seething song, fork, dragonblast, mishra's bauble or urza's bauble. 4 of each. Add lotus petal for mana fixing if necessary. 4 bogardan hellkite and 2 kokusho, the evening star. Maybe a tutor.

Can the fork be used as a way to copy a counterspell just in case its necessary to save the casting of dragonstorm?

Vampire child what you just said is impossible.

However:
a lotus petal (1 mana fixer)
a mountain/swamp/badland (land)
dark ritual (+2 black mana)
dark ritual or seething song in any combination x3 (+6 mana and if you have any seething song, you can chnage this to seething song and 2 forks or 2 forks and a seething song)
dragonstorm

Is a possible but very unlikely hand. Most of the time you'll get at least one bauble or an extra land, so you can easily cast it by turn 4.

@Ekruob, yes, each copy is a seperate spell, and thus needs to be countered seperately. Same with Replicate. And Ripple, if anyone actuly plays that in constructed. Multikicker, however, the extra effects are all part of the original spell.

terrible card because its 9 mana, which means you need specific combo for you to be able to use it.
ScissorsLizard
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Ekroub: your friend is right. When Dragonstorm goes on the stack, at the same time X copies of Dragonstorm go on the stack, where X is the number of other spells played. So you can counter the original, but the other copies would still resolve.

Best to use your counter on the last Rite of Flame he uses to get to that 9th mana. Or use a Mindbreak Trap.

Braid of Fire won't work - the mana empties after your upkeep is done, and this is a sorcery, so you can only cast it on your main phase.

@TheWrathofShane

Reread the wording of storm, it only makes copies for each spell cast that turn, which means other storm copies wouldn't help.

Might be better off with, say, some Lotus Petals and Pyretic Rituals instead of the other storm cards to simply up the available mana accel.

Turn one play mountain. Then play Rite of Flame, Rite of Flame, Desperate Ritual/Pyretic Ritual, Seething Song, Seething Song then Dragonstorm.

Search for 4 Kokusho, the Evening Stars and whatever else (it won't matter). They die to the legend rule. When they die, all opponents lose 5 life and you gain life equal to that life lost. 5x4=20. You win...Forever.

You don't even have to splash black for that. Just stick them in your dragonstorm deck and go to town.

Does it bother anyone else that there are no permanents other than creatures that have "Dragon" as their type? I truly feel that this card has way more potential than it is given within the confines of Magic: The Gathering.

Aaron’s Random Card Comment of the Day #12, 10/12/10

Twelve days into Random Card Comments, and the closest I’ve come to a top-tier constructed card was Merfolk of the Pearl Trident… that is, until this little number.

The first time Dragonstorm appeared was in the Scourge set, which it essentially epitomized all by itself. After all, the two big talking points of that set were Dragons and the storm mechanic, and this card neatly combines the two. (It actually epitomizes its designer, Brian Tinsman, as well. Brian is a fan of boundary-pushing mechanics and giant monsters.) When considering which storm card to reprint in the timeshifted set of Time Spiral, Dragonstorm was the natural choice, both because it was such a poster child for Scourge and because it was one of the few storm cards that hadn’t been broken in half yet. A few good “rituals” and one Bogardan Hellkite later (also a Tinsman design), and what do you know? Even at nine mana, storm cards are capable of winning games instantly.

It is well doçumented in the annals of the Latest Development column how problematic—dare I say regrettable—the storm mechanic was. And we all knew that going into Time Spiral, yet we decided to poke the bear and print cards like Empty the Warrens and Ignite Memories alongside Dragonstorm, which didn’t end up proving that the mechanic itself wasn’t inherently busted, but rather to the contrary reinforcing that it was. Suffice it to say, you won’t be seeing storm as a set mechanic any time soon. I’d like to say never, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned working here, all saying “never” does is motivate a coworker to prove you wrong, and I’m not about to mobilize that guy.

But this isn’t the Time Spiral Dragonstorm; it’s the From the Vault: Dragons one. The From the Vault series was the brainchild of brand manager Mark Purvis, and was invented to re-instill a bit of collectibility into modern-day Magic, at a time where rock-solid worldwide distribution combined with internet sales means that most of what anyone wants is always at their fingertips. From the Vault is a “vanity item”—no one actually needs to own it, which means we can justify limited-edition print runs (typically we need to make sure demand is met for all our products in the name of competitive balance).

In order to make the cards look more special than our normal premium foils, From the Vault cards are printed on a special extra-foily cardstock. Additionally, what parts of the card the foil shines through on are engineered differently, and then two extra coatings are applied—a gloss over the whole card, then a matte over the name and type bars, giving the card some real depth. For the Dragons set, the matte was applied over the text itself, but for subsequent From the Vault releases, the text was “knocked out” of the matte, letting the letters shine through. If you own these cards, check them out and see if you can spot the difference.

You guys missed something: The chances of the 6 dragons on turn one combo is unlikely.

In casual, don't play lands (Play Simian Spirit Guide) and just mana screw until they say "Just get whatever the hell you want."

Done and done.

@darkfury: I'm sorry to say, but it says put into play, and not cast. Therefore, you would only get a total of 11 dragons (sad, I know), and you could only grab 4 Bogardan Hellkites, 4 Kokusho, the Evening Stars, 3 Broodmate Dragons, and a partridge in a pear tree, thereby dealing 40 damage to an opponent, getting 11 dragons out, and, just for kicks, throwing a tree at them. Hell, with the pounding they'd get, they might not even notice the pretty little bird. Ungrateful bastards.

I do like the idea behind storm... especially within red.
Red should be about endless mana, cards and opportunities. What I didn't like was the fact how the finishing card was designed. For a cmc9 card, you could expect an auto-win or a near auto-win, but why do I need dragons? THIS is why I don't like the card... and the combination with damage-dealing dragons should have been obvious.

They could have used Ball Lightning-like tokens or an apokalyptic destruction instead to make me happier.

As for red, storm is why I believe that cards like Recycle or Future Sight should be red and replace the stupid Furnace of Rath-like cards. It's much cooler to win by being able to cast/copy many Lightning Bolts within a single turn than having the damage doubled. So even the Mind's Desire would have been much better as a red spell.

bijartduath: an interesting conundrum, and the only way to really get it is to explain Storm decks- they actually aren't intuitive, but once you know how to do it, they are just about the most fun you can have on only one side of the table at a time:

For starters, early powerful Magic sets had cards like Ancestral Recall and Time Walk that produce stupidly powerful effects at low cost, AND help you set yourself up to get this in your hand.

Well, that's nice, but then you are still adding 1 + 1 + 2 + 1.....mana costs to rack up your storm count, which doesn't solve your problem of 'where the heck am I gonna get 9 mana?'

Enter. Rituals. Simian Spirit-Guide. Rite of Flame. Pyretic Ritual. Seeting Song. Geosurge.

Unlike the tapping of a Mox (unless it's the turn you play it), these spells will not only cumulatively increase your mana, but also count as spells for Storm (except the Spirit-Guide, I think)

2x Rites, a Seething Song, and 2x Geosurges will get you a nice healthy flood of mana, and count for 5 storm. If you use 2 of EACH of the above-named cards, you Storm for TEN Dragons, and more than enough to put some extra mana into Moonveil Dragon.

Koth of the Hammer is a nice idea, but not necessary.

love this card, I remember a particularly fun win, fairly recent,
Lands: 5 red 7 green 2 black (poor mana distribution)
Enchantments: Fires of Yavimaya / Warstorm Surge
Opponents field: 27 life+ Plains + fuckton of Honor of the Pures/intangible virtues + Larger army of 6/6 tokens (around 20)
Spells: Lightning Boltx2 (4r7g2b), Seething Song(8r5g2b), Dragon Fodder (4r2g1b) *Drops Broodmate Dragon, Balefire Dragon and Furyborn Hellkite

Warstorm surge dealt 26 damage, Attacked for game, felt like a boss

Geosurge is useless for dragonstorm. It can only be used to pay for creature or artifact spells, neither of which is DS.

First I thought, "what's the point of Storm on this card? You're never gonna have enough mana to cast anything before it..."

And then it hit me, wait, mana-producing spells like Rite of Flame or Pyretic Ritual count for it... If you base your deck around it, you'll probably be playing 2-3 spells just to be able to cast it, that's an immediate 3-4 dragons on the battlefield. Not too shabby.

i am CLEARLY not a johnny, but jesus christ, i don't see HOW anyone could cast this with more than 1 or 2 storm for 9 cmc.

@ToAsTy42o,
There are plenty of red spells that give your more red mana as you cast them. Most obvious would be Seething Song. Two of those will give you all mana you need and pump storm counter. Now, if you just happen to have a hand of Dragonstorm, two Songs, Mountain, Infernal Plunge and Memnite/Ornithopter, that is first turn win.
Dragonstorm is horrifyingly fast if deck is built around it.

@bijart_dauth

You pretty much want to worry about playing mana ramp spells to get this out early if you want to benefit from the storm spell. Best I can come up with (And only on a lucky god hand):

Turn 1:
Mountain, Tap for {r}
Rite of Flame, {r}{r} floating
Rite of Flame, {r}{r}{r}{r}{r} floating
Seething Song, {r}{r}{r}{r}{r}{r}{r} floating
Seething Song, {r}{r}{r}{r}{r}{r}{r}{r}{r} floating
Dragonstorm, find 5 dragons.
