Seems strange that they would have this and the pretty much strictly worse Duskdale Wurm in the same set.

@ pedrodyl: you're far more likely to get a Duskdale Wurm... Anyway, I have mixed feelings about this card. First off, it's the Mythic wurm that always needed, and that art is gorgeous. On the other hand, I feel like it should have been a Pelakka Wurm on steroids, instead of a Worship on legs (or no legs...). Regardless, it'll probably be a nightmare to play against when you've run out of removal. And I'll pick up a copy because it's a Wurm with gorgeous art.

@TimmyForever
The thing about Platinum Angel is that, not only is it subject to Artifact as well as Creature removal, but once it leaves, if you've been taking advantage of its ability at all, you're probably not doing so hot on the life total. Furthermore, top-decking an Angel when you have 2 life is nothing but a brief respite. I would much rather have the nice cushion of 7, and even more the 7/7 trampling body in what's probably a highly aggressive deck.
Angel still has its place, but this is far from useless in comparison.

Hey! Why the low rating? This guy is awesome!
First off, he is a 7/7 for 7CMC with trample and that unique ability to raise your life total in a pinch. Forget about that, basically you CAN'T LOSE unless he is removed! That means your opponent has to waste a removal spell just for him, leaving your other fatties alive, AND he IS a fatty himself! This pretty much stops red decks completely. Other colors can deal with him just fine, but are still FORCED to remove him. The only exception are mill decks, but they had better hope that they survive his attacks and mill in time!
Easily 5/5 for green creatures

Life loss counters his ability since it only works if your life is above 7, only affects damage, and only resets your life to 7 when it ETB.
I played this guy during draft and my opponent (playing GW) all but conceded. This guy is an absolute house in limited in the absence of a lot of removal and if you have no way to get rid of him, you lose by milling out.

Now this is how a Mythic is supposed to be. Not just an overpowered mess of keywords, but something BIG and game changing. With this guy out, the game is dragged down into a standstill. Or it would be if you weren't using your new immortality wurm to smash the everliving hell out of your opponent.

With as lucky as this card is, I can never seem to pull one.
If your opponent is playing a normal deck that can only win by reducing your life total to 0, then yes, Elderscale Wurm's ability is superior to angels. However, there are a lot of ways to win without reducing your opponents life total to 0 (milling would be the most common one).
The artifact type is a double edged sword. It makes angel more vulnerable to artfiact removal (red) but protects it from spells like terror, and a lot of other black removal. Artifact is also a much more relevant type then Wurm, giving you more combo potential.
Angel have flying while wurm have trample. Both are powerful evasive abilities and it depends on your opponents deck which ability is more powerful.
Wurm have +3/+3 giving it more of a punch if your do not have a stronger creature themselves, and makes it more resistant to burn.
Platinum have a much easier casting cost. The GGG limits the wurm to decks with a lot of forests, while platinum can be played in any deck.
They both have their cons and their pros and overall I'd say that the wurm is slightly stronger but harder to cast while the angel is slightly weaker but more flexible.

Antsache
★★☆☆☆ (2.0/5.0)(3 votes)
@pallymander
There's no "Life Gain" at play here. Your life total becomes 7. Unless the text specifically says "you gain X life," Vortex's life gain effect does not apply. Likewise, the two damage tick won't take the enemy below 7 as long as the wurm remains in play, because no life gain is actually taking place there.
You can bypass the ability, as others have noted, with any card that has a "lose life" effect or its own "life total becomes X," effect, where X is less than seven. Vortex doesn't do either of those.
Lord_of_Tresserhorn
★★★★★ (5.0/5.0)(2 votes)
@Antsache: Wrong. "Your life total becomes 7" always implies "You gain the amount of life needed so that your life total becomes 7." It's that way with all cards that state "your life total becomes...", for example, see the rulings on Tree of Redemption.
Therefore, cards like Forsaken Wastes, Havoc Festival and the mentioned Sulfuric Vortex will impede the EtB effect of the wurm.

Just played this card earlier today in a quickly strewn together deck.
My decked consisted of plains for land. W, WW or 1W mana cost spells And various artifacts...
It took a while, but I managed to cast the wurms in back to back turns... all thanks to Gilded Lotus.
My first Wurm got killed off by deathtouch, my second then got pacified... and I eventually died from lack of creature summons (buried further down in the library).
However, I only later realized, my "loss" was an error on my part. I totally forgot that the wurm prevents my life from going below 7 when dealt damage (via attacking creatures).
WHOOPS!!!
But, it's okay... I was only playing against my 11 year old niece and 7 year old nephew. I only managed to build that deck in a few minutes before that game too.

Ruling question:
I'm 90% sure of the answer to this question, as the rulings window makes clear that damage being dealt to wurm and player simultaneously cannot prevent the wurm's ability to maintain the life total despite the damage dealt, however it describes a single spell doing this, and so I want to certain.
I miracle a Revenge of the Hunted and cast it on my Deadly Recluse, making it a 7/8 deathtouch trample which must be blocked by all creatures able to do so, and then I attack with both of my creatures. My opponent is forced to block the Deadly Recluse with his Elderscale Wurm, which leaves the Ghoultree unblocked. My Deadly Recluse destroys his Elderscale Wurm and my unblocked Ghoultree hits for 10 damage, BUT, if I understand correctly, these events happen simultaneously and so the Elderscale Wurm's ability still prevents my opponent's life total from being reduced to less than 7, correct? Also, there is no way to make combat damage occur in any way other than simultaneously. Even if my Deadly Recluse were somehow given first strike and so was able to deal damage to my opponent after first destroying the Elderscale Wurm, all damage would still be dealt simultaneously, and so there is no way to defeat my opponent with normal combat damage the same step his Elderscale Wurm is destroyed, right?
I *could* use some ability to destroy or exile his Wurm before combat damage is dealt, and then my Ghoultree could defeat him unimpeded, but IF for some reason I've no way of eliminating his Wurm other than combat damage and also for some reason no way of damaging my opponent other than combat damage, then I will be forced to do so on two separate combat phases (and thus, on two separate turns unless I've got a trick to give myself an extra combat phase). Have I got it?

Ya, when I saw this card for the first time I was lovin the resemblance to Triceratops. Such a great concept for a wurm.
I love everything about this card's image.
I imagine the setting as being in the deepest part of some ancient jungle-forest. Perhaps he's the guardian of a long-forgotten temple or something of the like. The amount of sunshine filtering through the canopy sheds an awesome light of power upon Elderscale Wurm. You can really feel his immense presence just from looking at him. Despite his size he seems like the type of ancient beast that could easily go unnoticed if he wished to. You could walk by him or over him without realizing it or perhaps he's always got his eye on you no matter where you are in the jungle - watching through the trees from a great distance.
As a playable item, definitely a neat card and I thoroughly enjoy this guy. I like cards that condition your life. Platinum Emperion is another cool creature. Makes for some interesting gameplay.
