For only one Red extra, you get an instant-speed Earthquake with an awesome Bolas quote.

HAHA, DIE WALKERS, DIE!!!

The instant speed makes the {R}{R} worth it.

Also, Mystic Decree. Just to be crazy.

I'll admit that I was a bit skeptical when Planeswalkers first came out. Now that they've made their mark and rightfully here to stay, it's wonderful to see more cards designed to interact with them.

The crappy part is, if I'm playing heavy red with x spells you bet your ass I'm gonna be playing red planeswalkers.

I think this is intended as a jab to planeswalker control decks, it may not hit players like Fault Line, but it gets the job done

I love planeswalker hate.

Is this the only spell that deals damage directly to planeswalkers?

@ Vinifera7, as far as I can find with searching for cards that have "damage" and "planeswalker" in the rules text, this is the only one to do non-combat damage to a planeswalker directly.

They could have just reprinted fault line. But maybe that would have been too strong? Fault line is superior in nearly all cases.

@Vinifera7: Don't forget that any damage dealt to a player can be done instead to a planeswalker.

Of course Nicol Bolas would be the one Planeswalker arrogant enough to end a sentence with a preposition. He doesn't give a damn about your Planeswalkers or your grammar. He's Nicol F***ing Bolas.

Its nice to be able to hit multiple planeswalkers at once with at least one spell in Magic. Gonna miss damage to players though.

Remember that any "deal damage" to "target player" spell can deal damage to a planeswalker, just announce that you are targeting the planeswalker instead of the player.

This is, however, to date the only global burn spell that hits planeswalkers instead of players. Which is interesting being able to take out multiple planeswalkers with a single spell.

The extra Red makes it an instant effect, which is nice if your opponent tries to drop an overrun or something like that. Still, it reduces X by 1, and in burn or aggro, you need every point you can get in.

That said, I much prefer earthquake to this spell because it damages each creature without flying and each player. In burn or speed-aggro, often those few extra points on the opposing player are all that's needed to win.

Still 4/5 for good red board wipe

Awesome spell, that can take out creatures and planeswalkers at instant speed!

Make up your mind wizards! Am I a planeswalker or not?

Really? It doesn't hit players? That's...sad.

Bonfire is eclipsing this card now, but don't underestimate it. Magmaquake can ruin anyone's plans.

So funny people hating on 'not doing damage to players.' You do realize that whereas you can make the 'player damage' targeting them target one of their planeswalkers you will have to take the damage to your own face or kill one of your own planeswalkers. There is a BIG negative to having to take player damage to your own face by default.

Magmaquake is really good for a slow control deck that just wants to wipe without dealing damage to players. You DO NOT want to have to take damage no matter what. This alleviates that.

@Trygon_Predator But for one more you bit Planeswalkers. I'll keep Magmaquake :) And it's an Instant!

Yes, they could have reprinted Fault Line, but then it wouldn't be the same card. This hits planeswalkers exclusively. If you want to kill your opponent's planeswalker without taking any damage yourself, this is the only card that lets you do that. Any other wide area damage card will hit you too.

Instant speed board wipes are really good in my Tajic EDH deck. I can attack with a couple weenies/tokens to activate battalion, and then clear the board to get free hits.

I think fault line would be better though, I just need to find a copy.

The problem with this, the only decks I want to run it in uses planeswalkers.

Lord Bolas is spitting badassness all over the place in this one. Imagine his voice, when he's saying it. To you. With all this ground melting and firy stuff around you. Auch.

It's nice to see Bolas getting his red burn on. Usually he is much more in the manipulator or mastermind role, even in his two other mono red cards mindclaw shaman and rakka mar he has that role. A card like this is a nice way to show he also has the raw red power to straight up wreck a battlefield.

I guess other people may have already made this point, but Magmaquake is NOT strictly worse than Fault Line. Magmaquake doesn't deal damage to you, yet it will still get rid of the opponent's planeswalkers.
