Reprints of both Sengir Vampire and Serra Angel? How delightfully nostalgic.

Ah Sengir Vampire. When I think of MTG, I think of this iconic art.

Used this in the prerelease , helped me win a round...

Opponent had a flameblast dragon out , and attacked me and used it's ability , I ended up with 3 life left.
On my turn I slapped a Slaughter cry on him and attacked for 7 , then I used Fling to deal him 7 damage again , he dropped down from 14 , to 7 , to 0...for helping me win 2 rounds he deserves at least a 4.0 from me

@DeaTh-ShiNoBi So, what you're saying is it's bad because it's worse than Baneslayer and dies to removal?

@DeaTh-ShiNoBi

You do know that you are comparing an uncommon to a mythic rare, obviously the mythic is going to look better, its kind of the reason that they have different rarities because some cards are better than others.

You say that he has a lack of protection from spells, well he is actualy protected from more spells than Baneslayer is.

Some spells that he is protected from that Baneslayer dies to:DOOM BLADE, Corpsehatch, Hideous End, Death Mark, Vendetta, Combust,

Some spells that Baneslayer is protected from that he dies to: Celestial Purge, Devout Lightcaster, Grasp of Darkness

i only checked standard for those spells, and it looks to me like Sengir Vampire has more of a protection to spells than Baneslayer has

and you said that most people wont block him with small creatures or if he is untapped they wont attack with small creatures, well that is not a bad thing its a good thing, so what if he isnt getting pumped by his ability, if they are letting him through because they dont want him getting bigger well, then you get to deal them 4 damage everyturn till they block, and by dealing damage it lets you get out active bloodthirst creatures, i dont see how that is bad

just because he has that ability doesnt mean that he has to actualy gain counters from it for it to be a useful ability just the fact that the ability is there is useful, same as a blue deck leaving 2 mana open on an opponents turn, they dont have to have a counter spell in their hand but as long as they have a card in hand and mana open its the threat of a counter spell that is useful

in closing
Sengir Vampire > Baneslayer Angel because Baneslayer dies to Doom Blade

Look, it's a black air elemental. That's not necessarily a bad thing. It fills in the midrange black flier slot. And it's ability...well, I've been running this card for years, and he's only rarely gotten a single counter, and never more than that. New art sucks though, bring back the Anson Maddocks Nosferatu.

This guy needs his own rarity, I swear.

He's not quite Rare-worthy, but he's too damn good for an Uncommon.

Well, back in the day you had to use a Siren's Call to feed your Sengir. Now you have Alluring Siren. Seems like even better times to be a Vampire. :D

Power creep killed off the usefulness of sengir vampire, and that's too bad. Still has some of the better flavor text though, and isn't bad enough to be unplayable in casual decks.

It went uncommon? That astounds me. I guess serra angel did as well. Both were very good in their time, not so much anymore.

I'm glad to see him back, and at Uncommon, which is where he belongs.

Yes, he's not a Baneslayer or a Grave Titan, but he still poses a threat.

Serra Angel is now the standard angel in 2012, so it's only fitting that she once again faces off against her oldest foe, the Sengir Vampire.

Sengir Vampire is one of those rare cards that was good when magic first started and is still good today. A 4/4 flyer for 5 cmc is pretty good right off the bat, but throw in its "grow" ability and you've got a damn solid critter. Great for general use, great for combo players, great for beating your opponent's face in. What's not to love?

...actually the art could use some work.

Not bad for a 4/4 flyer for 5. The bonus of being able to add +1/+1 counters if he kills something is also very nice. Block with him for a few rounds then go wreck some face!

Playing this bloodthirsted after playing a bloodthirsted Bloodlord of Vaasgoth is really funny.

Particularly when they don't have any creature removal. Or at least any that'll work on a black flying 7/7.

I like how M12 has a big creature at uncommon for each color. Serra Angel for white, Belltower Sphinx for blue, this for black, Volcanic Dragon for red, and I'm not sure abot green. Cudgel Troll or Carnage Wurm, maybe?
But really, this guy is too good for uncommon. I got one in a draft. My opponent did not want to attack me.

He should be unrare. Not quite rare, but higher than uncommon. Same with Whispersilk Cloak if they reprint that one.
Now, I'm not usually one to bash on art, but what the moose?

It's a pity that there are no black permanents or spells that are similar to a Contested Cliffs. THAT would make the vampires shine... eh... I mean "really good".

Oh I feel so nostalgic seeing this card back in action. I need 20 of him <3 4 for every black deck i have :). God I remember this was what Vampires used to do, kills something or does something to the opponent and it gets bigger, then comes along good ole Zendikar with their shinnangin vamps, Its sad that this game is older than I am, and these kids these days complain on good ole classic cards that truly kick some major butt. But I really wished they added a new artwork to this, I mean they added new artwork to the Knights and Serra, yet they still keep Mr.Frankenlady? I mean they should of came up with a better artwork, something that fits his name.

I like that each color has an Uncommon flying power-hitter at five or six.
Blue: Belltower Spinx
White: Serra Angel
Black: This
Red: (Okay, this one's at six, but bear with me.) Volcanic Dragon
and Green, despite not having any really good flying creatures, except things like that one Efreet, has:
Stingerfling Spider, which can kill any of the above mentioned.

Got to hand it to them. They built a good draft set-up.

now with innistrad you can get a Curse of the Nightly Hunt out and block all day, clearing the field for other growing vampires like Bloodcrazed Neonate and Rakish Heir.
18 years later, he STILL finds some way to raise hell

I'm disappointed I don't see him played more, decent 4/4 flier that people don't want to block unless they can kill him or have no choice. I play 3 or4 in my vamp deck, just got back into magic, so have to use old revised/4th art ;p

White: Serra Angel
Blue: Phantasmal Dragon
Black: Sengir Vampire
Red: Volcanic Dragon
Green: Cudgel Troll.

When you think about what each card does and how much each card costs, each of those two attributes makes perfect sense for the cards' colors and for the cards' speeds. Even Volcanic Dragon makes perfect sense for Red at 6 cost. Yes, it's a little slower to cast. Red has traditionally had creatures cost a bit more for what they do than other colors have (see Sabretooth Tiger, Elvish Archers, and Youthful Knight). Well guess what. He casts a turn later than the other flyers I mentioned above, but he attacks at the same game tempo. They wait a turn to attack. He casts a turn later, but attacks right when he comes out. That sort of fits Red. The creatures cost a bit more, but they're often faster, or at least more tenacious.

Green's creatures are basically always a bit cheaper for what they do and how big they are as compared to the other colors' creatures. Cudgel Troll fits that. He's efficient. But for his cheapness, his toughness is reduced to the ever-vulnerable 3. Still in line, though, he compensates by taking advantage of that creature ability that has been Green's traditional specialty: Green Regeneration.

Great set, these creatures.

Kinda funny how his self-pump is sort of the inverse of the Innistrad block vampires' self-pump.

You could make a silly combo with Gorgon Flail (or Basilisk Collar), Thornbite Staff and this.

Art-wise, it's decent. I'd place it better than pale bald Sengir, but not close to the Beatdown Box Set art, makes him look like Baron Sengir, and... I guess that's the way it should've been?

I for one love the new art. The Sengir bloodline aren't your pretty-type vampires, this guy deserves a freaky, Transylvania-esque mugshot. Just look at that lovable guy!

Awesome card! this card was the start of vampire tribal decks (at least for me). Throw this in a vamp deck with all sorts of self-sac vamps, and Blade of the Bloodchief, and you have got yourself a nearly unstoppable attacker with flying

Definetely 5/5

Back when I was a Yung Gorgon-Zola in the Revised Era, we would watch Nettling Imps don their chef hats and serve Sengir Clan their daily allotment of Pearled Unicorns and Mesa Pegasus. It seems Sun Dappled Whimsy was more potent than Winstrol.
