Looking back now at cards like the Baron really makes me realise just how powerful Dark Ritual was. He's still good, but without fast black mana, he's not the backbreaker he was all those years ago. Especially not when compared to any number of other big black monsters who followed, from Spirit of the Night onwards. I actually think time has been kinder to Autumn Willow than to her nemesis. He's still one of the coolest characters the game has ever seen, though.

Looking for some lore? Here's a recap of his 20 right now, spoilaz ahead.
Dude terrorised Ulgrotha for ages, increasing the ranks in his vampire army exponentially over time. Serra was briefly in his plane until her lover, Feroz, passed on to better life. After her departure and Ihsan's transformation into a Shade, the Baron lost every opponent he had in his plane.
Now, he amasses his legion to go through a mysterious Dwarven Gate hidden in his castle, which leads to an unknown extraplanar location.

One of a few playable creatues from Homelands.
Also, i wonder why the oracle still uses +2/+2 counters...

The Baron's key weakness as a card is that he has to tap to use his ability, leaving him unable to attack and often block. Unfortunately, there are no equipment cards that grant vigilance at the moment (except for one, but it's a U/W colored artifact anyway.) If one is released, I suggest that it be used with the good Baron immediately.

What I love about this card is that not only is it an iconic card from MTG's past, but also the fact that the Baron's story is not yet complete. As far as I know, he was able to fend off Serra(even gave her a ride in his black carraige) then he was on a mission to conquer all of Ulgothra, which he may have done. The last sighting of the Baron Sengir was with his massive Vampire Armies marching through the "Dwarven Gate" underneath Castle Sengir on a mission to conquer either other parts of that Ulgothra...or other planes entirely. We have not seen the last of Baron Sengir.

Please let Il Barone be behind the new rise of vampires. Please.

Love this card, was THE card I idolized when I was a kid. Opened so many packs of Homelands back in the day and never got one, finally bought the one at the local card shop for ten bucks. Then over a decade later I bought a box of Homelands and got two... and then later I bought an additional playset. So now I have seven Barons. Still not enough though. I agree with the guy who said make him into a Planeswalker, he's too cool a character to exile to the suckiness of Homelands for all eternity!

The Baron is an exceptionally cool guy, and it's a shame Homelands was such a weak set. Truly a waste of good setting...
My only hope for the Baron is for him to be made into a planeswalker. An awesome planeswalker...
Or, remake him as something like:
Sengir, Lord of Ulgrotha. keep the mana cost, make him an 8/8 flyer, regenerate target vamp for 2 life, maybe some other abilities like trample or lifelink, w/e. Oh and protection from white. Especially pro white.

@Smoked_Peasant
So the new one should be 8 for an 8/8 flying trample lifelink protection from white AND regenerate other vampires?? What is he, the new baneslayer?

divine_exodus 8 mana is a lot a 8/8 with flying trample lifelink protection from white and pay to life regenerate target vampire really would not be that good I mean look at say Akroma's Memorialand he said trample or lifelink not both

That' a very cool old school card, and has a red stone on the chest similar to Sorin. Nice.

I wonder what happened to this guy. Considering his power (especially vs. the overall weakness of Homelands), he probably won and went on to conquer other planes. As for the card, he's a bit overcosted, but not badly so.

You know, he's been quoted on Elixer of Immortality since M11 and Innistrad has a boatload of Vampires...and we know Sorin has something to do with it...AND we know Sorin is really, really old and has been planeswalking since about the time he could regular-walk.... That's it, I'm calling it: The much celebrated return of Baron Sengir in the Innistrad block! Count on it!

Undoubtedly one of the greatest legendary creatures ever.
Sure, he's far from the most powerful, he's totally for casual or EDH only...
But he reeks flavor, ancientness, and utter coolness. He is a God amongst timmies, even more so since he is head and shoulders above everything else in this set creature-wise except Autumn Willow.
I sincerely wish for him to return in some form, though I'm pretty sure he's on the reserved list...
Also, he has even increased a bit in power by becoming a bona fide Vampire. While he can't use his regeneration on himself, he now interacts with the likes of Captivating Vampire or Vampire Nocturnus.

This is kind of like the "Alpha Shivan Dragon" of Homelands-- technically, not the best card in the set (honor goes to Merchant Scroll, which got freaking Restricted. Homelands is so proud :p), but DEFINITELY the one you want to open if you have actually for some reason bought a Homelands booster pack. Maybe you have a gambling addiction, lol.
He's a rare, he's a Legendary Vampire, and unlike the other 'notable Legends' of the set, he's...um...actually notable. There's a good chance that without him, Vampires would not have been taken seriously as a Tribe to really build on. Also helps that I remain convinced that Baron Sengir's story was at least in part inspired by the Ravenloft Campaign setting of D&D.

Baron Sengir is awesome. You can almost imagine the hammy one-liners he could snap off whilst on the battlefield. "Your doom is at hand! What say you to a little dance?" *Chops off the hero's limbs with a sword, hero rolls around on the ground and bleeds* "Behold! Your end is here. Oh, and you're going to die, too." *CD-I voice*"I wonder what's for dinner?" *Chomps down on someone's jugular*

so +2/+2 counters do not cancel each other out with two -1/-1? It's not in the rulings. would be nice if giving him a +2/+2 counter by proliferating whil having a +2/+2 and two -1/-1 conters on him

5/5 flying for 8 = terrible. Regenerates his friends for free = nice. Growth ability = relevant, since you want to keep him untapped for the regeneration.

We need a return to the Homelands Plane, there's so much room for improvement. But I mostly wanna see Barons Story continue xD. That or he becomes a Planeswalker lol.

I hated this card back in the day. My buddy would play him and win every single time. The only card I owned that could stop a 5/5 flyer was a 1/5 wall. That stopped the Baron for 1 turn, but the wall died and the Baron went to 7/7. After that it was just a matter of time before I lost the game. Obviously, this was my friends favorite card.

Amusingly, the only other vampire card in Homelands to use his ability on was the worthless Irini Sengir... and before the creature type update, even she wasn't a vampire. The only vampire in either of the sets before or after him was Krovikan Vampire.
I guess back then Draft wasn't a thing, so they didn't feel expansions needed to work on their own. Still, that last ability of his is a bit odd in that respect.
