I don't like this card for this reason: it doesn't fit in a regular blue-black-red deck. I do agree with the previous comment about this and Death Baron.

This card is just about enough for me to go make an Esper-colored zombie deck. I figure there are good good choices to merit the inclusion of blue and white (tidehollow sculler, scornful aether-lich, vedelkan ghoul) apart from the standard mono-black fare.

im not sure how i feel about how this block has thrown a zombie into every colour combination out there. Obviously the majortiy of zombies in this block are blue/black/red. That makes it difficult to play this card and tidehollow sculler (both great cards that i wish were blue instead).
Thankfully there are cards like rupture spire, or the grixis illusionist, that will make this card playable potentially even without white mana. It's just too bad i have to put filler cards in to make this card more easily playable.
Can anyone think of a way to get this card into play easily with a Grixis colour scheme deck?

The problem with playing this card in regular Blue-Black-Red Grixis is obvious: It's splashing white. The hardest part about using this card in that kind of deck isn't as much getting the card, or the white. It's getting both of them at the same time. When I was modifying my Grixis to run this card, I really just gave up on trying to splash it in as the only white-taking card in the deck. That parameter is just too conditional. Better to also throw in some other cheap White-Blue stuff, to mix it up, and go from there. Sure, you're adding a whole new color in, but at the same time you can always keep a side-board of straight Grixis to slip in if things look like they're going to hell..
Or the other way around. Not many people have the forsight to expect a little touch of white in a Grixis deck, and sometimes that's all you need to finish something off.

The thing I notice people saying a lot is, Zombies are in Blue/Black/Red. I only know two or three zombies needing red, and even Thraximundar isn't that good. Most Zombies are Black/Blue. Some are Black/White. So... Black/Blue/White zombie deck, anyone? :D If you REALLY want some of the red zombie things like Unscythe, which is awesome in it's own right, use the black red filter lands. Doing that even lets you toss in some other red spells, Banefire wins, Cruel Ultimatum wins, Thraximundar if you really like him... All works for me.

I agree with the people who think that this works great in an Esper zombie deck. Sure, the only other white zombie card is Tidehollow Sculler, but even the sculler and covenant are a good enough reason to build an esper zombie deck. But what the covenant really excels with is Mind Funeral. Mill an entire chunk of your opponents library and then watch them cry as you (in addition to ruining their deck) summon of lifelink zombies. and when their played with one of the zombie lords such as Death Baron or Lord of the Undead, then victory is in your favor.

It actually doesn't go well with Unscythe, Killer of Kings. Unless you plan to target yourself with Covenant, Unscythe is going to remove all of the prospective zombies. I guess you could use it after all of your Covenants, but it just doesn't seem worth it.
Orzhov Basilica works pretty well to get this down, or you can use the Esper obelisk or triple land.

Great card... when you have the mana. Or when you can actually fit into your blue/red/black zombie deck. Or when you're playing an opponent thats actually playing a creature based deck. I run it in my deck for the lifelink and the only white mana producers I have are 4 rupture spires and 2 esper obelisks. Now if it didnt cost white mana, this card would be an absolute wonder. I feel it should have cost 3 and 3 white or black mana.

The necromancer in the art looks kinda like Liliana Vess!
This card works well with the zombie/clerics back in Onslaught.

Srsly guys, who cares if its not RBU, most zombies are just black. Plus, the Esper Zombie Deck sounds pretty cool, but its better just going manly black splashing white for obvious reasons outside of standard.

This card is a BOMB. Whenever I drop it on the table, the opponent looks a little queezy. The White mana cost is not really a big deal guys, it is only one... throw a simple color fixer in your deck like Rupture Spire or something comprable and you are off to the races.
Since there isn't nearly enough white zombies I simply splash white in a b/u mill deck running Lich Lord of Unx, Traumatize, and Nemesis of Reason. It's an admittedly slow deck and opponents tend to play rather aggressively to bring your life down, but Necromancer's Covenant's lifelink and instant army of zombies means you'll recover all life quickly. Combine with Boneknitter and Vengeful Dead for laughs.

I'm surprised that the comment with the highest rating says there are no white zombies except for Tidehollow Sculler, because there's alsoPutrid Warrior and other black zombies with white activated abilities.. Also, you don't really need milling, because dredging should do the job, too! :) Even if you just remove a "standard" graveyard with three / four creature cards from the game, you receive something very nice for your six mana..
For more graveyard manipulation, use green cards like Life From The Loam, the many green zombies like Putrid Leech, and that green zombie card many people don't know: Strength Of Night! :) Yeah, Putrid Leech really can make use of lifelink..
What's with all the talk about R/B/U zombies? There are zombies in every color. I'd run this in W/G/B zombies in a heart-beat. But that's weird, so nobody wants to think of that...

Subtract lifelink and , and you have an Innistrad card.
A most excellent card, dudes! But anywho, this card can totally be broken if you run a Zombie deck with mostly Lords or use Deathbringer Thoctar (with at least 1 +1/+1 counter) and Death Baron; the Lords pump all your creatures up and can swing for massive damage, or the Thoctar (and counter) with Baron can wipe an opponent's field clean while gaining life all the while (use Deathbringer's effect to remove a counter and peck a creature for 1 damage and kill it (Death Baron grants Deathtouch, thus killing it), regain the counter from the creature going from play to graveyard, and repeat until your opponent is out of non-token creatures). One of the few things that makes me feel better than what this card does for me is using Zombie Apocalypse on a Human deck.
