You'd think this guy would have been given a greater amount of flair being that Phyrexia came from the black chunk of the color pie, but this guy didn't seem to get much love from R&D. He's just a life sapper at the end of the day.
I think he's rather underwhelming for the most part, unless you are playing life-gain. He's an alright beater for a somewhat decent cost, but I like Chancellor of the Tangle so much better, and I don't even play green...
Also,.. NOW Phyrexia gets vampires? Shouldn't this have been done earlier in the set? Could have atleast given him Deathtouch like Vampire Nighthawk.

No one would be crazy enough to keep 4 of these in opening hand.. would they? Starting game with 32 vs 8? Hmmm......

He would be an awesome early head start in a multi player game. My second favorite of the Chancellors and the easiest to get as he comes in one of the intro packs.

How is this guy getting so much hate? Of all the chancellors, this guy is actually the most solid. None of his abilities are conditional, and the first ability helps you pay for phyrexian mana early in the game. Plus, he's a vampire.. as in perfect for a life drain deck with blood tribute and malakir bloodwitch. For all intents and purposes, he's a better baneslayer, albeit that also makes it cost 2 more mana. With the amount of pro vampire cards running around right now there should be an easy way to fit him into a vampire deck somewhere, either red/black or green/black.. or jund colors? Make with the deck building people. Get creative!
This is a 0th turn kill if you have 7 in your starting hand.

Flying, Lifelink 6/6 for 7 is damn playable already. The extra opening hand clause makes it really sweet...
But with all the absurdity in just cheap black creatures I'm not currently going to change any of my decks up.
Although, this Sheoldred and some of the other black fatties like Geth & Kalitas makes me wonder if a {G}/{B} ramp deck couldn't be a pretty devastating standard option that wouldn't necessarily run a large budget.

Of all the Chancellors, he's the one whose type jars for me. Angel, Sphinx, Beast and Giant are all supposed to be fatties, but Vampire? I think of black weenies mostly.
Definitely not a diplomatic multiplayer card. You'll lose that life you got quickly.

Great for my Vamp beatdown, even if it never sees play (7 mana in a deck with mana curve of 2 and heavy 1 costers is kinda steep) simply because it gets the beatdown started turn 0.
Being in a local meta that plays almost exclusively multiplayer I kind of like him, free Blood Tithe without card disadvantage and eventually becomes a 6/6 Flying Lifelinker Vampire (that does mean something!), not bad to throw in a casual vampire deck as a finisher.

@Tynansdtm You forgot your self discard effect: Cabal Therapy, Putrid Imp You also forgot your Dark Ritual Should be no problem to have him attacking turn 2, for a net gain of 2 life, (or a net gain of 9 life if you use Exhume instead of Reanimate.)

Really should have been a demon rather than a vampire. EDH might be kinder to him.
That said, the Timmy in me wants an opening with four of these guys.

Best freeform deck ever, 60 of these. If you go first, you win. No questions. Even if the other person got a leyline of anticipation and played stuff for free, nothing avalible could stop you. Unfortuantly, er, scratch that, fortunatly no one would ever play with it.

I badly wanted this card to work. I pulled two and had a Standard Vamp deck at the time. Could not fit it in, just too unreliable for constructed. Now that Zen rotated, I made my deck into an EDH version. I have most of the higher cost rare vamps from across a few sets so it practically made itself. Again, could not bring myself to add this one. The trigger is 1) literally 7/99 chance for a minimal life swing at EDH life levels. And the creature itself isn't all that spectacular compared to my other vamps. Sure it's above the curve for upper tier black creatures in terms of power to mana cost, but still...
It was a good concept but I think they missed the mark on this one.

Turn 0: Reveal, get some life. Turn 1: Draw, go. Discard Chancellor of the Dross. Turn 2: Swamp, Reanimate, lose 7 life. Turn 3: Swing, gain 6, have more than starting life.
EDIT: @Atali, that's your net swing in single player. I usually play multiplayer, where the life swing would be greater, so I left it open to interpretation. And your combo is faster, but also requires more cards in hand. I almost always draw-go if I've got a Reanimate and a fatty in my opening hand. This is just a fatty that gains the life back.

Big, fat, lifelinky, and flying. His effect at the beginning's much more impressive that it seems at a glance, and can turn the tide of a limited or even constructed match. I really wish he had intimidate, but I can't complain too much. Easily a 4/5.

A great reanimation target for The Mimeoplasm. 6/6 flying lifelink commander damage by itself is no small deal, and that amount is in turn pumpable to absurd amounts. Plus, the chancellor effect is painful in multiplayer (assuming you can draw it in your opening hand out of 100 cards).

Chance @ free Blood Tithe and a 6/6 flying lifelink for 7 mana is fair. Blood Tithe is 4 mana alone people.. 4/5. Favorite Chancellor too.
Uh, quick question. That thing's a vampire!? ... I suppose I can kinda justify that. Not exactly sure what I'm seeing, to be honest, but when I see that I don't think "vampire."

Cards like this are why Lord of the Pit sees little to no play.
-1/-1, swap trample for lifelink, but remove the drawback and add on a random "starts the game" ability.
A very solid black flyer, and while overlooked in favor other other things (Rune-scarred Demon, etc.), well worth playing.

The problem I see with this in a multiplayer game is it automatically makes you out to be more of a threat than other players (you've just caused everyone else to lose life before the game has even started!) so it makes you a scapegoat immediately.

60chancellors.dek is awesome. Its only bad matchup is against another 60chancellors.dek. Then whoever goes second wins. Which is bad because then the die roll determines the match. But still, absolutely hilarious.

One of my favorite cards - its big, its nasty, it paints a big fat target on your forehead and every time you play it you hear "It's that guy." 5/5
Perhaps the most valuable lifelink creature yet. It easily does the job of three or four similar creatures.
Edit: This card works best in a deck that brings out mana quickly - set up right this can potentially get out on turn five or six latest.
Personally, I recommend Strands of Undeath for this guy. Trust me - its one of my best combos that I have. I wouldn't post advice that I haven't "battle-tested" and confirmed works.

60 Dross loses to 61 Dross, which in turn loses to 62 Dross. If they ever got rid of the 4 card limit, in theory, whoever could assemble the largest pile of Chancellor of the Dross and could shuffle it without assistance would win just about every game. 1000 Dross decks aren't unbeatable though; any instant speed lifegain like Nourishing Shoal or a single copy of Chancellor of the Dross stops the entire deck.
