Awesome artwork, Chippy definitely did this fan favorite justice. This card is just awesome to look at and behold, matched only by how awesome it is to rape people's faces with her.

Love the new flavor text- very nice reinforcement of white's apocalyptic compulsions. It also makes me think of "Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice" even though Barry Goldwater certainly wasn't expressing 'white' ideas in that speech :)

not to be very mean, but this new art for akroma seemed to have stained her grandiose image... it really falls short of capturing the angelic yet stern qualities of the iconic card...regretful to have her be reprinted in such a mediocre way.

I agree with MoonUnderaMask. The artwork is good - yet for some reason it doesn't mirror the image of Akroma Rom Spears and Magic the Gathering: Battlegrounds gave me at all. Her face looks unfamiliar.
Some may think different, but I prefer the old one with the thick hair rather than this one with straight hair.

quite nice artwork, the thing is i think she should at least be wielding that claymore instead of just holding it. While i do like the older flavor text, Akroma's new text fits her far better.

"No rest. No Mercy. No matter what." fits better on a _____ The Merciless card. something with a dedicated bounty hunter feel. the speech, while nice, doesnt feel as well done as with her old flavortext.

I agree that this new artwork is to harmonic compared to what Akroma is. I really don't like it.

And to Darkfury about flavor text, if anyone has read the book they would know Akroma was created just to kill 1 person. Which is very bounty hunter like.

This art is horrible. The face isn't done right and the rest of the art isn't Arkoma at all. This is why people have stop playing and buying Magic the Money Hungry. Her hai isn't supposed to be like that, seriously. Why, why would anyone want to commision that piece of crap, and who let some crappy artist attempt to do her like that? Much better art. Akroma was always supposed to have a glorious feel, filling those who looked at her with a sense of dumbstruck awe at the fact that anything so serene and beautiful could exist. This new art captures that. The old art, though? All I can think looking at it is "lol, eighties haircut". I thought that art looked silly back when I was a kid during Legions, and I think it now.

ok geniouses as to the debate as to whether or not reiver demon destroys akroma, the answer is no akroma survives sorry eved, sarroth you really should actually look at the rules before posting wishfull bs. according to article 702.14e of the shadow proclamation aka MTg comprehensive rulebook: Any damage that would be dealt by sources that have the stated quality to a permanent or player with protection is prevented.
Jedijoe
★★★★☆ (4.4/5.0) (7 votes)
@raverboy1123 - Look again, the Reiver Demon doesn't deal damage to anyone or anything when it comes into play, rather it destroys, and since it doesn't specifically target, creatures like Akroma, Angel of Wrath WOULD perish to it. If it didn't as you have stated, then other creatures like Progenitus wouldn't die from a Wrath of God, even though Wizards has clearly stated that it can due to the effect that Wrath of God gives to the entire battlefield. Much like the Reiver Demon's ability.
SolidSoldier
★★★☆☆ (3.9/5.0) (7 votes)
@raverboy1123 - Jedijoe is right, Akroma dies to Reiver Demon due to its ability not being a targeting or damage effect (which pro black would otherwise prevent), but one that simply says to destroy all nonblack, nonartifact creatures on the battlefield. No targeting and no damage is mentioned because there is none involved. Nice try raverboy and look more closely when comparing the rules and text next time.

KarmasPayment
★★★★☆ (4.0/5.0) (7 votes)
@raverboy112 - SolidSoldier and subsequently Jedijoe are both right.

Pro something means it cannot be targeted by spells or abilities of the appropriate protection, blocked (in most cases at least, except such cases when a creature is put into play already blocking, such as one from the new schemes in archenemy.) and all damage dealt to it would be prevented with exception of other rare cases such as me attacking with an Excruciator and you block it with Akroma, it would kill the Akroma even though she has pro red. Mass removal though, does not deal damage, nor does it target, thus getting around protection and killing Akroma, if in fact the Reiver Demon was cast from a player's hand. xD

Yay bandwagons! also, it's spelled geniuses**

I prefer akorma even over baneslayer even if she is 3 more mana becuse protection from deamons and dragons is so worthless deamon and dragon decks have a lot of kill cards anyway so she is just going to die the moment she comes out. However protection from red and black mean protection from almost all kill cards and a lot more including all daemons and dragons akroma is almost impossible to kill considering almost all powerful flyer's are red black or white vary few white flyer's can survive taking a hit from her and red and black flyer's can not block her or deal damage to her and she can attack and block haste is nice to and trample is amazing for the god level fighters and akromas power and tuffness and both one higher then baneslayers so I would be willing to pay the 3 extra mana for her.

★★★★☆ (4.3/5.0) (15 votes)
The art for this is perfect, and I'll tell you why.
It depicts Akroma at her very essence.
Chippy's captured a perfect balance of flawless beauty and inhuman monster.

Ixidor modeled her after his dead lover, so she's got a bit of Mary Sue-level of beauty going on. Pretty face, great curves, midnight black hair, shamelessly stripperiffic outfit.
She's also a soulless killing machine. Which is also pulled off very well. The liquid paper white skin. Cold emotionless face. Dead, empty eyes.

Not all angels are touchy-feely. Akroma was created to avenge Ixidor's wife. This art very much conveys that aspect of "killing machine," perhaps more than the seven keywords do. She's the Angry Lady, Magic's own Terminator. The new art does a great job showing us that.

I like this flavor text. It's a reminder that white has just as many self-rationalzing murderers as any other color. That's as it should be. The colors have long since moved away of from White being the "good" color, and Black the "evil" one. They are better defined by other characteristics than moral absolutes (which don't even exist).

The new art is stunning and this card is still as dominant as it ever was, even in lieu of its recent Angelic competition in the form of Baneslayer Angel. The one thing that remains a mystery is, what was Wizards thinking when they released Divine vs Demonic? Akroma, Angel of Wrath is perhaps the greatest testament to how utterly imbalanced this Duel Decks series was - the Black deck simply cannot contain the domination of Akroma, especially considering she has protection against anything the Demonic crew can throw at her...

@Ferlord

Per the Comprehensive Rules, protection is a static ability that permanents have (CR 702.15a). Static abilities are active only while a permanent is on the battlefield (CR 112.3d) and a card ceases to be a permanent if it is not on the battlefield (CR 110.1).

So no. Akroma's protection works only while she's a permanent (i.e. on the battlefield). She is not a permanent if she is in the graveyard, hand, or library; thus, she isn't protected in those zones.

However, Necromancy and Animate Dead bring a creature back onto the battlefield and attach themselves to that creature. When Akroma is brought onto the battlefield, she has protection from black. Akroma's ability will cause these enchantments to be unable to attach themselves to her, and she will be sacrificed. Zombify, Buried Alive, Reanimate or Surgical Extraction will work on her, because they don't target or attach to her while she is on the battlefield.

@WarioMan

The duel decks themselves go for over $100 too. :(

@ DarthParallax: Unless you're using mana acceleration and/or Quicksilver Amulet/Puresteel Paladin, by the time you play Avacyn, Angel of Hope and equipped Worldslayer to it, if you're playing Standard, you could've won the game already.

Sure Worldslayer is good on Avacyn but it's better on Kaldra in my opinion. You get board-wipes and you exile indestructible blockers. Of course, that would take awhile to play, too.

Anyway, this is a prime target for reanimator and it's a shock in my opinion it wasn't printed in Graveborn. Sweet card with great white flavor 5/5.

Ok, so this seems to be the only card immune to people hating on the reprint art.

But, even if somebody wanted to complain, I finally have an explanation. Check out Linvala, Keeper of Silence, Angelic Arbiter, and Balance. This is a much more 'White' Akroma than the original Legions one. In some ways, Akroma, Angel of Fury was simply putting the old Akroma in the correct card frame.

Akroma is pretty damn badass either way.

EDIT: it has been a long and prestigious career for Akroma, but I suspect that Avacyn, Archangel of Innistrad (also known as Sorin Markov's Galatean girlfriend), may finally top Akroma as the most powerful Angel in Magic. Judging by Vault of the Archangel we are already looking at Flying, First Strike, Vigilance, Lifelink, Deathtouch, Protection from Vampires, Werewolves, and Zombies. That really seems actually reasonable, unless they make her a Demon-hoser instead/as well? I wonder what the mana cost and power/toughness will be though?
Protection from non-human creatures? it's still too early to be absolutely sure what form her protections will take, or if she gets First Strike and Vigilance or not, but she really will be a Flying, Lifelink, Deathtouching Black White Legendary Angel. I'd put money on that.

Edit Again: Wrong on just about everything, lol. But speculation is so fun! (even if I'm hopeless at it) Stil, Avacyn, Angel of Hope might be more powerful than Akroma if you give her a WORLDSLAYER.

j-mind: let me make this as obvious as possible: Of course I was thinking of using Kaalia of the Vast- and where Kaalia isn't legal, why wouldn't I play Quicksilver Amulet or some other way of being faster than CMC? Why not Birthing Pod in standard?

If you look at every creature and think 'this sux because I can't get it out til turn X' then you aren't thinking very well. By that token, Emrakul the Aeons Torn and Progenitus would be the two worst creaures in Magic, because if you only ever tried using Basic Lands to summon them, Emrakul is a turn 15 and Progenitus is a Turn 10-13 depending on if you draw too many of some basics and not enough others.

After I first saw the card Tinker, and ESPECIALLY after I saw Kaalia of the Vast, I started to realize that CMC is the least important stat of a card, except if you are running Erratic Explosion or stuff like that.

This is a very overrated card. I am not against eight mana cards in general, if you cheat them out or ramp up to them, they can be very effective threats. However, If you are going to do all that for one card, it should come much closer to ensuring you victory. A good finisher, what this card should be, gives you a massive threat that has to be dealt with, at the same time as making sure your opponent's threats are stopped (See Gisela, Stormtide Leviathan, and Elesh Norn). This acts as a powerful beater, but its abilities only affect itself, and don't stop your opponent at all. If you haven't lost any life, it takes four hits from Akroma to kill you, and if you had a victory plan set up before this is played, you will probably still win. Gisela, on the other hand, is in my opinion the best angel in magic, because it is the kind of card that lets you win even if you seemed to have no chance otherwise. Don't get me wrong, this is still a good card, and i expect it to be played in some competitive formats, but it shouldn't be rated so high, (higher than Black Lotus in fact!,) regardless of the art, which is amazing and way better than the original.

Epic art, Chippy couldn't have done any better on this one.

When you look at finishers like this (for control or ramp or whatever you're playing) you look for a few things. 1) Effectiveness and 2) Resiliency. Akroma's 6/6 flying first strike trample haste vigilance takes care of the effectiveness, and protection from black and red gives her a considerable amount of resiliency, considering a lot of creature removal comes in black and red.

My suggestion for the next Time Spiral-type set:

Akroma, Fallen Angel (5BBB)

Creature - Angel (6/6)

Intimidate, deathtouch, lifelink, protection from green and from white.
Sacrifice a creature: Akroma gets +2/+1 until the end of turn.
Pay 10 life: return Akroma from your graveyard to your hand.

The art, the foil, and the modern card frame all make this the most amazing-looking printing (so far) of one of the game's most iconic creatures. But I have a major gripe with it - the flavor text. What happened? Even her memorial reads "No rest. No mercy. No matter what."

The card is epic!
Amazing abilities on a tank body and the art is beautiful to boot. Why not 5/5? One simple reason; my utter hatred of foil cards. I think it was the dumbest things WotC ever did. I don't mind random foils as much as I toss them aside (or trade if they have value) but printing certain cards in ONLY foil? Even worse is the "Premium" constructed decks. It means I have to pay MORE to get a non-foil Entomb. Damn you WIZARDS!!! Ok I feel better now. Besides all that she's great...I'd still buy the older versions though.

The wet clingy hair looks better on a zombie than an angel and her face shows no emotion which I find odd for a being known as the Angel of Wrath.

Some like the eerie soulless look of this version and I can respect that, I just don't agree. I am glad that both versions exist, though this is one card I'm happy to own an original version of.

As for the card itself, I love it. It's not often that I have her hit the table and not end the game shortly thereafter; she's my favorite angel and the measuring stick I compare most finishers to.

Avacyn's older sister likes to play rough.

Whenever I play this card I like to imagine Ixidor singing that famous Abba song.

"I believe in angels!"

Ah! The beauty! Its blinding! Personally my favorite way to play this beaut is with Quicksilver Amulet. Nothing beats your opponents expression when you flash her in to block him mean and nasty creature.

This was the first good card I owned.

When I was beginning Magic, I went to a local card store and asked what I should start with. I wanted to play with my friend since he had a good deck from Mirrodin.

The store clerk said that this Duel Deck came in just yesterday and is going for about $20 dollars. I was a little skeptical, but then they rationalized that it has two different decks, and will sell like hot cakes. Not knowing any better, I purchased it, thinking, "Well, if this is going to become valuable...".

4 years later, I've spent more money on Magic than anything else; got into EDH; and have a great group of friends who play Magic as well.

I guess you could say she changed my life.

akroma's memorial is SO much better. which means she's more powerful after she's dead.
also, she's more powerful than god- wrath of god vs akroma's vengeance.

Flavor text should be a comment on her beauty, because this card is just too beautiful I fall to my knees and cry

Probably one of the most beautiful and powerful Angels ever.

The art alone would let me rate it 10/5

I got this card a few weeks ago and was in awe, in awe that I found her in a friends old box of cards in a sleeve and it was in perfect condition! Secondly I used her today only to watch her be mauled by some green spell that destroyed her. Next turn I got Akroma's Memorial out on the field and brutalized my friend. I still lost because of Liliana and her ultimate ability. He swept me. With Akroma.

Akroma is a classic, She's just plain awesome. And the most scantily clad angel of all time.

Here's a curious thing I noticed: Akroma appears to have a navel, despite the fact that she is a sentient illusion that was created by a guy called Ixidor.

I like Avacyn, Angel of Hope better.

Amusing all the comments on the artwork when she only had that appearance for one fight.
