It's like Blood Tyrant and Ludevic's Abomination had a child and gave it a lot of steroids. This card is nasty, particularly the art, which looks brutal as hell. Belongs on a metal album, imo. I'm hoping they make this a wallpaper of the week, that'd be sick.

Everything about this guy is so undeniably badass. He can be blocked only by flying black/artifact creatures, and he can't be chumped. The mana cost for the equipment side means nothing in a black-white deck because of Stoneforge Mystic and Stonehewer Giant.
This guy is my Commander (Under house rules, my friends allowed it to be a mono-black deck.) I was so excited when I pulled him, my store did an intro pack sealed event, after the regular sealed event, where we get an intro pack and the pack that comes with it can be used to edit it. I got the blue-black, Mikaeus, the Unhallowed, Elbrus, the Binding Blade, AND a foil Havengul Lich. All from one pack.

Interesting fact: If you read the Savor the Flavor article about Geist of Saint Traft called The Saint, the Geist, and the Angel, you see that when alive, Saint Traft was tricked into killing a cultist with the Binding Blade, which then freed Withengar who then killed Saint Traft. The guilt of freeing a demon is what caused his spirit to become restless and keep on fighting evil forever.

I love how well this card works in blue/black decks. Both colors have a lot of flying and unblockable. I personally swapped out the Stromkirk Nobles for Tormented Souls in my Vampire deck, just so I could run this singleton as a spare win condition. Surprises a lot of control decks who don't take care of Tormented Soul early, and instead take out the flying vamps.

Great card for multiplayer. Those formats tend to be slow enough to get the dagger out and swing with it. Baring combo shenanigans and whatnot, he will most likely be the biggest thing on the board with 3 forms of evasion. And when someone loses he gets twice as big.
Though I recommend playing with colors that can protect him when he is unleashed. fit that bill.

Excluding the flip cards, Withengar and Haakon are the only legendary creatures that can never be cast from the commander zone (Haakon because of his casting clause, Withengar because he can't be a commander, because his base state is the sword.
