I really dislike the idea of Lord of the Pits. I can't really see a good way to use him, he's a flying trampler whoop-de-do. Why exactly was he a mythc?

the way you use Lord of the Pit is to have a breeding pit that does "At the end of your turn, put a 0/1 black Thrull creature token into play." And you put the breeding pit out first and then every turn you just sack a 0/1 Thrull to feed the Lord of the Pit card.

I love this card. Goes great in my Hellfire deck.

Lord of the Pit is hard to use at first, but what you need is a token generator (I use wasps and saprolings).

I too love the new artwork.

I love this card. Yes, for nowadays standards its too weak and dangerous, but at least, in compare to Akroma, its in Magic since like the beginning. I have great fun with him in Divine vs. Demonic. He really needs that Breeding Pit, though. Also, a single Pacifism WILL ruin your fun. The guy really misses Protection from White :)

Magnificent art work; the best art work for Lord of the Pit ever. But did it really need to be mythic? Why do I have the feeling that all this has been said before about him?

I love Lord of the Pit ^-^ with Breeding Pit
if only I had a Bitterblossom or a Token generator like this:

(B) Enchantment
At the beginning of your upkeep, put a
Black Rose - Creature Token (Black) – Thrull Plant - 0/1
(Defender.) (T, Sacrifice Black Rose: Add B to your mana pool.)

good luck in everything to all ^-^... bye.

Nowadays that we have Jund and Golgari, getting to sacrifice a creature every turn can actually be quite an advantage. Plus, you get a giant flying, trampling 7/7 demon. I know that it's not the best card (Or even close to Akroma's equal), but I think it deserves a better rating than it has right now (the new art alone is worth 3 stars!). And at least when he deals 7 to you, he doesn't tap like some other demons.

Try him with Dragon Appeasement and Golgari Germination for some fun. :)

I used this guy with breeding pit about 15 years ago. He's all nostalgia and not much else.

Definitely shouldn't have been a mythic alongside Akroma, but this reprint was just incredible for those of us that have played magic since the beginning. Awesome new artwork, best yet.

He was never super amazing - He was always a little costly - he's 7 mana + the breeding pit combo which cost 4 and needs another 2 mana each turn, plus the sacrifice and if you fail that? - you suck on 7 damage! Wasps and serpents cost even more... Surely with that much mana/costs involved, there are easier and better combos to use. But if the combo did hit the floor -?- then it was definitely a bad scene for everyone else. Needless to say, he's a little expensive by today's standards.

I'm sorry, maybe there are better cards out there, but this is some of the coolest artwork I've ever seen. That guy is so bad-ass looking... and the flavor text is awesome. He has his drawbacks, but for long-time Magic players, it is great to see this behemoth back on the table.

Sure, LotP doesn't inspire the fear he used to, but I still run him in casual play. I miss cards that were both powerful and fun. Sadly, if it wasn't for the new (awesome) art, I don't think he'd see any play.

I played this big boy years ago in revised and used a spirit link on him. Back then that was pure ownage. I think the spirit link/pit combo is still allowed but the pit/cop combo was dissallowed cause you couldn't prevent the damage from the pit. I'm actually thinking about making a new deck using those same ideas.

I've given him a 4, but it's not for his quality, unfortunately.

Everyone here has already hit the nail on the head - compared to more recent offerings (most notably Xathrid Demon), Lord of the Pit is not overly strong. The people comparing him to his product's angelic counterpart - Akroma, Angel of Wrath - are on the money too; it is not a favourable comparison for the demon.

Still, I made a point of picking up a couple of copies of this printing recently because the flavour-lover in me couldn't resist! This card is a classic - any player from back in the day is familiar with Lord of the Pit. This most recent art is just phenomenal - it really emphasizes how much of a badass this creature is. His new flavour text is just incredibly awesome - that comment is addressed to you! I cannot think of any other cards which actually threaten you with their flavour text.

It's certainly not at a mindblowing power level nowadays, but the creature is so cool and embodies black's philosophy so well that I still look on him fondly.

Art is awesome, but that doesn't make the card any better. If you have a deck where you need to sacrifice creatures, he's a win for you, other than that I don't think he is worth it. I think Demon of Death's Gate is a much better choice. Yes 2 more mana, but you get that in power and touphness and no drawback. You even have a alternate way of getting him out by sacing 3 creatures.

Unfortunately, Lord of the pit's Sacrifice effect is not optional unless he is the only creature You control. So you would have to sacrifice stuffy doll to sate Lord of the pit's hunger. A truly gluttonous demon. He wont stop eating until everything is gone!

The classic combo with this guy was always a timely Spirit Link, so you could essentially tell him to STFU and GBTW every upkeep, not to mention gaining 7 life whenever he attacks or blocks. Now that we have Vampiric Link, you don't even have to get out of mono-black to make that happen, though he has to be the only guy on the board due to the sacrifice being mandatory. Still, not a bad deal.

Also, I'm sure I'm not the only one to have noticed this, but Lord of the Pit synchronizes very well with Breeding Pit. I wonder if that means he's just the lord of any pit full of tasty munchable creatures....

His art tells me one thing:

"Shit is going DOWN."

I have to admit(nah actually no, I am Akroma fan XD), Akroma in a 1vs1 fight can kick him anyday, but HE IS HYPER COOL! Look that ART! Look that flavor text! Makes the epic "No Mercy, No Rest, No Matter what!" look's like a phase for a REDBULL comercial. Is that good! xD

How often does the flavor text talk to the player personally?
It's a bit intimidating, honestly. I like it.

I find it a bit sad that he can't grapple with a particularly large squid, or scaled wurm. It seems like he should be able to do that, what with all the flavorful power.
I guess it just puts Emrakul in perspective though. Emrakul could take on two of these guys at the same time, even though it would be a tough fight.

The appropriate thing to do with this, is to brazenly take the 7 each time, and laugh at the looks of horror on your opponents' faces because they don't believe that you just don't care. After all, you are running a Kaalia of the Vast deck with Congregate and Luminous Angel, aren't you? :D

There is only one Lord, and this is He.

There was a time when trading a Mox Pearl for this bad boy made sense, if you didn't like playing white. Man, how the years have flown by.

And this printing is quite an upgrade. Thumbs up. The new Oracle wording is clearer (dear god did we ever have the fights over whether Lord of the Pit could eat itself, back then. Check the old wording to see why.) The new art is stellar (going with Chippy was a fantastic choice for Lord's revival, his artwork for Abyssal Persecutor is awesome). The new flavor text is perfect. Heck, even the expansion symbol looks cool on this guy.

Lord of the Pit's one of five Beta creatures to become immediately and enduringly iconic (Lord of the Pit, Serra Angel, Shivan Dragon, Gaea's Liege, and Tim), and kudos to Wizards for reviving 'em one by one.

Lord of the Pit is infamous for causing you to lose the game. In the early days, we didn't have anything like Bitterblossom...

No, you can only sacrifice your own creatures. If you have no other creatures you are forced to take 7 damage. But if you have other creatures, you are forced to sac one. You can't choose to take 7 damage instead.

I think is was a good idea to make Lord the main-stage card for the deck. Even though nearly everyone will concur that Reiver Demon is better (not strictly, mind you), it's not a Lord of something, and it hasn't been around since the beginning of the game.

I think many old fans appreciated it. Good job, guys.

New artwork is fail, no one who respects this card would play anything but the original art. Still, all sorts of new possibilities for this guy these days. Reassembling Skeleton is my current favorite. I also play this in my rat deck - my wife hates it.

This is the card that made me want to start playing this game. First, I just love saying "Lord of the Pit." Then there's the artwork... nothing like it, man (on the ORIGINAL, that is). As far as the suicide aspect, dying to this thing because I wasn't able to control it was so flavorful that it was almost ok. I mean, I started playing D&D/AD&D back in 81, so I got that if you summoned a demon and screwed around with it, you'd die. No cacodemon spells here. And when I didn't die, but used my summoned fiend to crush my opponent? All was right with the world.

This card isn't about what is better and what is worse. This card is about, well, this card. And it has to be a 5/5, because this is Magic, and it's a Lord of the Pit.

When I saw this art, I bought the cards. Simple as that.

Doesn't see a lot of play in my decks due to costing 7 and having not only a drawback but no way around his cost. With so many efficient demons (see Abyssal Persecutor for example) it's hard to justify him;

except that art and that flavor. He just *feels* big and *feels* better. When cheaper cards get huge numbers those numbers feel less important. When this guy hits I think "WHOA 7 power!?", even though one can just Rancor a Woolly Thoctar T3 or T4.

Something about huge, beautiful cards that makes the Timmy in me love the demons.

??! wth is with people nowadays?
THE way to play LoP is with an army black weenies (knights and specters and such), and dark rituals and similar efects. throw in a little mind twist, write up a Contract from Below to keep those little 1 2 and 3 cmc snacks coming, and if you feel your army of darkness' morale faltering, sing a Hymn to Tourach! In his native environment Lord of the Pit will wipe the floor with a player running Akroma, before Akroma ever sees the table! (eh... in mono-white, at least hehe)

All hail the Lord of the pit!
SerGarlan
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
He still has his uses today. You can bypass his weakness by either feeding him little things and triggering combos, or giving him lifelink or Vampiric Link so that the damage he deals to you is nullified or even heals you in some cases. Unlike the new demons (Xathrid Demon) which don't play kindly with their "lose life" drawbacks. He also doesn't tap which means despite all odds, even if you have nothing to tame him with, he will still kindly beat your opponent to death after punching you in the face.

And with this artwork and flavour how can there ever be strictly better version of him?

I feel obligated to remind you new generation players for what reasons the Pit Lord deserves the mythic rank as our old timers appreciated him as it is.

Consider that he is a 7/7 makes him quite the heavy hitter, like most Green Heavy Creatures, he is an more than adequate offender AND defender.

The Trample allows him to override chomp block tactics been initiated against him, and not all non-black heavy hitters may have this, if they do, they are mostly in low toughness which leaves them vulnerable to red instants or snipe shots.

The flying brings his threat to a whole new level since your opponents are forced to take drastic measures: as White you have to prepare flyers to hold him off; Blue can do the same or simply return/counter but in the late 7th turn, better pray they've saved enough counter-spells; Red is dog meat if he/she cant win the game before he comes out in the 7th turn; and Green has to get heavier hitters to turn you over into defensive measure before or after.

Let's not forget the Lord of the Pit is BLACK, and Black is associated with destroy, which makes him immune to black destroy factors while on contrast to the non-black creatures can be casually taken out.

In short statement, The Lord of the Pit is a flying, trampling 7/7 threat with Black Destroy Immunity all in ONE card. His upkeep in creature sacrifice/7 self-dmg is a reasonable cost consider how much damage you are potentially doing, though it may turn out suicidal if facing Pacifism or Arrest type Auras, it is something a player of this caliber using the Pitlord should understand knowing full well when to cast it or keep in hand.

Even though Shroud, Hexproof and Protection mechanics have put up a challenge to this creature, as long as he enters the battlefield, he will always be a major threat that can end the game in 3 turns when caught off guard with only Walls, 5/5 beast, or a 2/5 flying Azure Drake at the defenders position.
Moxxy
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
There's one thing different about Lord of the Pit than his newer variations that people often miss. Lord of the Pit doesn't tap if you don't meet his requirements meaning you can still hit your opponent for 7 while taking the 7 damage.
