Maybe it's just me but I can't see this card being good enough to be a mythic...

Does the rarity change mean it's now possible for the rarities of old cards to change without having them reprinted, sorta like creature types were changed?

you can't see this card being good!? It has flash, play it on their turn as they are attacking to (most likely) kill an attacker, direct 5dmg to them and then return the attack next turn. That's 10 dmg from a single, albeit expensive, card that should seal the victory late in the game.

Are you mad Volcre? I've see Boggy Hellkite used, and brutal isn't the word. And the more draconic the deck, the more brutal it is. Hell, I'd go so far as to say that its the best dragon to see play.

5/5 flash flying with a blaster effect... seriously, this is up there with kokosho the Evening Star on the brutality scale. Flash it in, kill a godsire and 2 damage to their face, revive it, 5 damage to the face again (bladewing the risen anyone?) then it swings for 5 power. Seriously, you wanna question a card's rarity, question Vampire Nocturnus, Conflux, or Aven Mimomancer first.

God I want a playset of these.

I simply enjoy flashing this into play as they play a life gaining spell.

@Volcre - Its mythic because dragons are a tribe now. Try using Dragonstorm to pop three of these out of your library at once! =D Now, If it only had Haste...

Yes there may be better dragons but this with flash ability in late game, whoo creepy... it can end the game: imagine you were about to cast a spell then this dragon swoops right in front of you....... ending: toasted... run this in Dragonstorm deck and this will definitely be in its highest level...

My main opponent has one of these, and just knowing it's potentially going to show up leads me to keep a "Harm's Way" in my hand until I see it. This is one of those cards you hate to see on the OTHER side of the table, but it's awesome to have for yourself. I want to play this guy in a deck with Maelstrom Archangel, that would be fun (for me, anyway).

great flash, great stats, great flying, great comes into play ability, there must be a drawback? Oh yeah, 8 mana.......... if you are playing dragons, you are in red, if you like the burn effect, you are probably playing red as well. If you are playing red and need an 8-drop to win the game, you may as well concede. There is a kind of spell you use when you need a topdeck win late game for red, it's called an X spell, I happen to know a REALLY good one called BANEFIRE. lets see, 8 mana for a 5/5 that will egt removed right away, probably even countered, and might do 5 damage? or 8 mana for 7 damage that can't be countered, and can't be prevented. you decide.

@Andrew7588: how can you claim Vampire Nocturnus not worth rare? Child of the Night Becoming a 4/2 lifelink, flying arse, look @ zendikar and you see your not going to like people who have vampire decks

this is for "unfair" decks like Hypergenesis and Dragonstorm. Who knows, maybe even a Warpworld or summoner's trap deck could show up with this in hand and kick some ***

Question: I have a Dominating Licid in play untapped and ready to uh, Dominate.
My opponent slaps down a Bogarden Hellkite. It resolves and "enters the battlefield".
However, it's triggered ability uses the stack, so I respond by putting my Dominating Licid's activated ability on top of it. My Dominating Licid's ability resolves first, giving me control of the Hellkite. Then it's triggered ability resolves. Wouldn't it resolve in reference to me, allowing me to assign the damage, since I'm now it's controller?

@Ficitonarius: I'd imagine not. You might want to check with someone with more experience in complicated rules, but from the sound of it, it's a case of "even if the original source is gone (that is, the hellkite in this case) the ability still resolves once it's on the stack". So even though you're now the controller, the ability went on the stack with the original controller having the choice as to how the damage is divided, and I can't imagine that would change as they put that ability on the stack.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned where ancients tread.. double 5 anytime your hellkite enters play, that would be amazing. Especially paired with torrent of souls during a revival giving it +2/0 and haste, or a paleoloth wouldn't hurt either.

@andrew, godsire is an 8/8, you can't kill it with the hellkite unless you block with it.

If an opponent played the Bogardan Hellkite and chose to deal 5 direct life damage to me, and I responded with a Windstorm for 6 mana(5 +G) would it kill the hellkite before the 5 damage hit my life or would the 5 get through and then kill the Hellkite? Thanks

★★☆☆☆ (2.8/5.0) (2 votes)
@kitoudark
The ability checks when it resolves. First it triggers when the hellkite enters the field, then because the hellkite itself is doing the damage, the ability checks to see if he's still around upon the ability's resolution. In that situation, you would take no damage.

This card is crazy good in dragonstorm decks. Other than that, it's just too expensive.

I wish it had convoke like angel of salvation. And I don't see why angel of salvation shouldn't be a mythic if it was printed in a later set

Normally I don't even mention the art... But why is that dragon so big?
It's only a five/five... Big yes, but not bigger than most dragons.

Oh well...

It's a nice card, but I can't really think of all that many ways to abuse the flash. Red doesn't need to hold it's manna like blue dose do playing something during your opponent's turn doesn't really matter that much. Perhaps to smash an attacker with a sudden 5/5 smoker that flies out of nowhere to block.

As for the five damage. Perhaps to use it during the battle phase to take out a few attackers. Again, not much to use with the flash, unless you want to use in battle. Although, this together with the body could crush an offensive latter in the game.

So, base rating: ***

Flash: +*
Big body and heavy damage: +*
Cost: */2

Final: **** */2

Pretty cool flavor and sweet ability.

Really, though, not a very good card. It can see play in a budget Valakut or RG Turboland deck, though if one has the money, Primeval Titan and friends are way better "alternate" wincons.

PT isn't really alternate, but you know what I mean.

OUTLANDISH. DON'T READ UNLESS YOU'RE INTO WACKY COMBO DECKS.

Non-creature spells:
4 Buried Alive
4 Dark Ritual
1 Demonic tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor
4 Entomb
4 All Hallow's Eve
1 Lotus Petal
1 Wheel of Fortune
4 Entomb
4 Cabal Ritual

Creatures:
4 Bogardan Hellkite
4 Bladewing the Risen

4 Mountain
16 Swamp
4 Bloodstained Mire

took awhile to get it together, but I think that, as insane as it is, it'd be fun to whack people with this one. While mainly built to blow up a player in one hit, it does give you four 5/5 dragons to play with for multiplayer mayhem. fun fun. Should be interesting to see what happens.

EDIT~ Made the cards easier to find on Gatherer!

@ GooberSnotpants and @Kitoudark

Actually what Goober said is not quite correct. Just to be sure I'm clear, Windstorm cannot be cast until after Bogardan Hellkite enters the battlefield. When the Hellkite enters the battlefield its own ability triggers and goes onto the stack before anything else can happen (in this particular scenario anyway). Then you can in response with the Windstorm, and the Windstorm will go onto the stack on top of Bogardan Hellkite's trigger. Provided nothing else happens, the Windstorm resolves first and deals 5 damage to the Bogardan Hellkite, killing it. However, where Goober is incorrect, is that the Hellkite does not check for itself again upon resolution. The ability of the Hellkite is still on the stack and will still resolve and deal 5 damage divided as the controller of the Hellkite chooses.

Sorry Kitou, you still get burned even if you Windstorm the pesky dragon.

In order to make Bogardan Hellkite check for itself still being on the battlefield the way GooberSnotpants describes, the ability would have been written similarly to the following:

"When Bogardan Hellkite enters the battlefield, if Bogardan Hellkite is on the battlefield, it deals 5 damage divided as you choose among any number of target creatures and/or players."

See Sigil Captain for an example of an "intervening if" clause on a card. Read the card rulings below Sigil Captain for an explanation of what it means.

Ok, cast this guy with a Sarkhan the Mad out, and in response to Hellkite's ability, cast Tainted Strike on it, and then activate Sarkhan's ultimate for a clean kill.

The best Hellkite, hands down. The steel Hellkite is a close follow-up, but this is broken. It should have cost 2 less, though. It's hard to pull off the flash in most decks because of the CMC.
SarpNasty
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
It's an instant speed Lava Axe that can divide the damage and hit creatures, not to mention you also get a 5/5 Dragon. 5 damage is abou 5 cmc. 5/5 Vanilla creature in red is probably around 5 cmc. This has flash, flying, can spread the damage, and is Dragon subtype. For 8 cmc, this card is giving you a whole lot to work with. In most red decks, buy the time you get 8 mana, you're opponent shouldn't have a lot of life to take a lot from this guy. And if you accelerated to him, then it's just that much better.

He can potentially deal 10 damage from the get go. Flash in at the end of their turn when they are tapped out, and then swing for the win. Thats worth 8 mana....

I'm glad Flyheight got it right. Goober's version assumes the intervening if clause that is not present and would ruin every evoke creature.

I love this artwork btw.
