The first creature with negative power... Hooray! I'm just wondering what happens when you deal NEGATIVE damage to a player... do they gain life? Or just take nothing?

They take nothing. What I want to see is a creature with negative tougness!
Volcre

Spinal Parasite from Fifth Dawn already has negative power and toughness...

Double strike is so good that they have to do this.

They just take nothing. It actually happens a lot in blue that a creature will deal negative damage to a person. (Lots of -x/-0 stuff)

All instances of damage being dealt below zero are rounded up to zero.
Also, you can pump him up. Calm down.

compare to sandstone warrior.
at 4 mana he's already about equal, anything higher than that and he becomes better than sandstone warrior.

5 mana
8 damage vs 6 damage
6 mana
10 damage vs 7 damage.

A damn good attacker for when you run out of burn spells with an Ensnaring Bridge in play.

@Chocopuppet: There was one with sunburst before.

Flavor wise I'm getting a headache trying to understand how this creature is composed of fiery rock, capable of hitting anything before it hits him and then again, but can't swing for damage with having mana pumped into him.

Wild Pair a 1/1(Myr Moonvessel, Memnite) or a 0/2(Ornithopter) for this guy. That is all. Wait, no it isn't!
Braid of Fire. I think that's all.
Wait!
It's not!
Rancor + Giant Growth + Berserk.
Assuming you pumped him up 3 times because of Braid, he'll be a 2/3, then a 4/3 with trample, then a 7/6 with trample, then a 14/6 with trample. And double strike. I.e. 28 damage. 3 green mana, the three red from Braid of Fire, and assuming you got him out with Wild Pair, he becomes a BAMF.
Also, if you think Wild Pair is too expensive, consider this, Red has Pyretic Ritual, Desperate Ritual, Rite of Flame, and Seething Song. Let's not forget, since you're also green, you've got all that mana ramp at your disposal. Especially if you get all those 1/1 elves(see; Skyshroud Elf, when you've got Wild pair, bam, throw down an elf and you've got Mr.Rumbly. That's if braid's been out three turns. If it's out four turns.... you've got another.

If he dies.... Withstand Death instead of Rancor.

Might actually make a deck around this guy.

Really cool, you would think it functions the same as firebreathing, but it doesn't, so it becomes 2/3 for 2 mana, then essentially a 4/3 for 3 mana, etc...really cool concept

@desolate-masticore

@desolation-masticore

I can. He attacks with a searing burst of ash, followed by a normal attack, both of which require him to be hot enough in order to work properly.

In casual play yesterday, my friend giggled when I put this down. He stopped giggling when I gave it a Grafted Exoskeleton.

As with all double strikers, the point of this guy is to iBLAZING SHOALgnore everything else on the card anBLAZING SHOALd cast some obscene power boBLAZING SHOALoster so you can swing for BLAZING SHOALlethal. The most mana efficient is probabBLAZING SHOALly something green, say, might of oaks perhaps?

What is thaBLAZING SHOALt voice? It sure does feel like someone is inBLAZING SHOALterrupting me... in the voice of that Aflac duck?!?!

BLAZING SHOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even though both negative stats ( Spinal Parasite ) and double-strike + fire-breathing (Dragon Tyrant) have been done before this card is still so unique.

You'd think they'd add a reminder text to clarify what happens if he hits with -1 power.
Because it's not like this is a common thing to have on a creature.
(Although in fact it's not the only one to have a negative power.)

I'm pretty sure there have been some kitchen table debates about him already; where players wondered if he could increase an opponent's life, or a blocking creature's defense. (He doesn't, he'll simply deal no damage.)

As a reference, here are the rules about negative numbers:

104.1b Most of the time, the Magic game uses only positive numbers. You can’t choose a negative number, deal negative damage, gain negative life, and so on. However, it’s possible for a game value, such as a creature’s power, to be less than zero. If a calculation or comparison that would determine the result of an effect needs to use a negative value, it does so. If such a calculation yields a negative number, zero is used instead, unless that effect sets a player’s life total to a specific value, sets a creature’s power or toughness to a specific value, or otherwise modifies a creature’s power or toughness.

So another notable thing is that if you use him in a deck with Soulblast,
his negative power will actually reduce the total amount of damage - it's not simply always treated as zero.

@ Paleopaladin Sorry, but you can only equip creatures you control.

This guy and Ogre Menial actually gave me an idea.

3BlackRed
Creature — Dragon
Flying, double strike, infect
BlackRed: ~ gets +1/+0 until end of turn.
-2/4

6 mana until you can actually do something with it, but all you need to do is connect with 5 power.
