Looks like a friggin' anime character now.
Also, his 0 is equivalent to 1/2 of the original Jace's -10. This guy's gonna be a monster in drafts.

I really hope this card can somehow make mill decks relevant again, but I doubt it.

It might seem like he would be a mill monster, but honestly, Jace, The Mind Sculptor could even do that better against a standard deck, being able to get up to his ultimate before the Adept can finish off a typical deck. This assumes you have no other mill cards, but that's the thing. Jace, The Mind Sculptor didn't need backup. I suppose it's another reason why he was so overpowered.

Jace Beleren is probably still preferable in most decks with an option between him and Adept.

At least the ultimate ability produces the desired reaction. Dang, that's cool.

DING DONG THE PRINCE IS DEAD!

Sorry about that. Anyways, I love mill. I think I like Jace 1.0 better, but this isn't bad. I'd run both, 1.0 to excel then kill him with either his -1 or -10, then play this and finish their deck off.

I actually like this Jace.

He's costed right, his abilities (will make) sense, and he sorta reminds me of Zack Fair.

Although, in my Mono U mill deck, he won't be replacing anything any time soon. Until Zendikar rotates out, Archive Trap is staying put.

Even with just his first ability, drawing an extra card each turn is a plus, regardless of milling. Of course, for that purpose alone five mana would be too much, fortunately Jace also have second and third abilities...

With Innistrad supposed to be graveyard based, who knows?

NO planeswalker will ever see as much play as JTMS, that is just a fact of life. If it does, it will probably be banned as well. I think this will let mill decks become good again, because they have a hell of a card to build around.

That said, man, look at that synergy his ult has with Jace's Archivist. 40 card mill in one turn. Holy crap.

D.A. Gregory is to be commemorated for ruining not one but two planeswalkers' art in M12; both Chandra and Jace.

What is this, trying to appeal to the anime/Final-Fantasy group? Absolutely terrible art.

I dislike the art on this card a great deal.

I thought that people matured as time goes by but it seems that Jace has hit a midlife crisis and decided that the best way to deal with it was to dress like an emo band member out of some anime comic or Final Fantasy game.

I hate bashing artists because often it is the art of a card that really makes it a sweetheart of mine, but I would loathe to see magic art diving head first into this type of style.

We can easily forgive the occasional odd-looking Treasure Mage, but when it's a planeswalker which are generally among the most powerful and important cards I get worried.

Chandra's art is a little better I find though her lips would make Angelina Jolie envious... When the art on a card is this bad I actually don't want to play with it.

I actually don't like the new Garruk either. He looks so clean and well kempt on his card. He should be dirty and grimy looking in my oppinion.

Well, aside from my aestetic problems with the new planeswalkers their abilities are interesting enough. Especially Chandra looks like fun. I'll miss the old Garruk the most when he rotates this autumn and also Ajani nearly as much.

not only is wizards trying to bring back mill, but in the new set coming october 2011, called "innistrad" graveyard base abilities like buyback, flashback and so on are are really dominant in this upcoming set.So, milling YOURSELF might be the option.

I opened myself up a Jace, Memory Adept in the final booster pack of today's prerelease (my very first tournament!). Out of the 7 total games that I won, six were from his milling abillity. He's deadly against 40 card decks so long as you protect him, and I ended up going 3 wins, 1 loss.

Definitely not bad, though 5 mana PWs are never auto-includes in decks regardless of whether or not they're good. The +1 is card advantage for positive loyalty; the ultimate is enough CA that you should be winning off the back of it, and the 0 is definitely good in mill, but also good for graveyard based shenanigans.

Personally though, unless Innistrad offers some major love to graveyard shenanigans (which it seems like it will), I would've preferred v1 back due to excellent synergy with Sun Titan.

C'mon guys, this IS the guy that took down Sephiroth after all.

But on a more serious note, I seriously love this guy. Once the Eldrazi titans go out he's gonna get much more powerful, perhaps even moreso since Innistrad appears to involve the graveyard ala effects like Flashback, not to mention his potential in Commander if you can hit off his ultimate. Easy way to get other people on your side without a doubt.

I am SOO tired of seeing Jace!
Black has 2 different planeswalkers.
Green has 2 planeswalkers.
White has THREE planeswalkers!

WHY couldn't Jace take the season off? Why couldn't Lord of the Unreal be the face of the new blue planeswalker? He's handsome, mysterious... and c'mon! After EVERYTHING that happen the past year with Jace, the Mindsculptor, do you REALLY want to see Jace AGAIN?!

They ban one Jace, apologize, then say, "Oh, by the way, here's another one. Also, go buy Magic 2012 online ;).

It makes me angry! Is there no other planeswalker in the Blind Eternities that has, I dunno, an easy-going personality and rather lay under an appletree and daydream rather than fight so he makes you mill instead?! I'd buy the novel just to learn more about this non-existant fellow and his pet...Sage Owl.

Also, this may not mean anything to anybody, but c'mon another "0" cost ability? Really? Color blue? In a U/B control deck with Jace's Archivist? Sigh....

(Also, the deck that won first in constructed at my place milled his opponents with Jace v3.0. The same happened in the following draft. Didn't help my open series wounds.)

By the time you can cast Jace AND use his -7 ability, you should already be down to about 40 cards each. As such, Jace, Memory Adept (have all players draw 20 cards) + Jace's Erasure for the win.

★★★★☆ (4.0/5.0) (8 votes)
It took me a while to notice, but the all of the Jace planeswalkers are extremely flavorful.

Just think about it. If you read Agents of Artifice (I recommend reading btw) you learn that Jace has great power, but avoids it in order to avoid causing harm. Basically, Jace 1.0, where he can use his knowledge to draw everyone and anyone cards, and uses harm as a last resort.

While following Tezzeret, Jace was taught to wield his powers more frequently, and his time in Zendikar was while he still obeyed Tezzeret. His goal was to stop Chandra at all costs, and Jace TMS reflects that perfectly.

Now? Now Jace has been called upon (at least this is what I gather) by Gideon to help defeat Nicol Bolas. THE Nicol Bolas. That means that Jace must show no mercy, and this card reflects it perfectly. He wields half his original mind destroying power at no drawback to him.

If he gets reprinted again, Yikes...

Using his ultimate while having Jace's Erasure and Jace's Archivist looks pretty scary...

You and your opponent draw 20 cards, Jace's Erasure mills him for another 20 cards. Then activate archivist - you discard your hand and draw at least 20, your opponent the same. Then you mills him for another 20. If you count it together - 80 cards in one turn. Not to mention having more erasures or archivists in play.
SorianSadaskan
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
His two abilities would force people to mill, seco ability is far too good consider milling ten cards means you get to see what the deck is really composed off, an you get free-win ifyou mill your opponent 5 times if they don't recycle their graveyard.

It's reasonable they made the CMC on 5.

2 days ago, at a draft, I first-pick him. I come in 4th, for a 'rare draft' in which all rares and mythics are pooled and I get a 4th Bloodlord of Vaasgoth.
Yesterday, at a sealed, with NO rare draft, my friend pulls one. I come in 4th out of about 30 people. He comes in 23rd. AND I GET ALL BIRDS Of PARADISE IN MY PRIZE PACKS!

He's not going to get banned, He's not going to be the best of the not-banned, and I don't need him in Foil. That means I actually stand a chance of picking one up, and therefore its ok to like this one.

Jace the Mindsculptor failed all three of those tests, which is why hated him. Cuz I liked him too much, and Im NEVER GETTING ONE. :(
Memory Adept is safe to like :)

Does anybody else think that this might actually be a younger version of Jace than the others? look at the Card of the Day comment...I really dont think we'll be getting many more webcomics for any of the Lorwyn 5 anytime soon, except, of course, Liliana. How is it that she's been around as long as the other 4, and yet we know less about her than pretty much every other walker in print? Innistrad...you got some splainin to do...

Everyone keeps talking Jace down because he can't protect himself. I dislike this argument. I think most people who say it are just parroting what other people are saying. Somehow, people think, because he doesn't have Jace, the Mind Sculptor's bounce ability, he must therefore suck. After all, he has no way to deal with opposing creatures.

Which creatures, exactly, kill Jace and not Chandra? Chandra can only deal 1 damage at a time. This only protects her against a creature with 1 toughness. Unless that creature has 5 POWER, it isn't going to kill Jace in one hit either. The creatures in Standard with 5 power and 1 toughness are...Arc Runner and Insatiable Souleater. Those well-known champions of Standard. And in imaginary fairy-land where Arc Runner is some amazing constructed bomb, Chandra can't even deal with it; it has haste. And if we're talking about a number of 1/1s or 2/1s or even 3/1s (or, heck, multiple 3/3s that Chandra can duplicate a Lightning Bolt to dispatch), she will only fare a little better if there are two or less of such creatures.

There's a reasonably simple solution to Jace's inability to protect himself: protect him BEFORE YOU PLAY HIM. What kind of blue deck doesn't try to keep the board under control anyway? He doesn't have to be Jace, God of Standard in order to be a good, usable card. He's got repeatable card drawing for positive loyalty (which is an upgrade over Jace Beleren even without the added mill every draw). Yes, he costs 5 mana, which means he's more prohibitive to play than the other versions of Jace. Yes, he's not as powerful as Garruk or Chandra. And yes, the objections to his new art style are perfectly reasonable. But seriously...don't just write him off because he "can't protect himself." Use a little thought when evaluating cards instead of just repeating what other people say.
Gaffy00

He's meant to be played along with Jace's Erasure.

Opponents deck to begin with (they draw any amount of cards from 0-7, let's say 7): 53
(On Turn's 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8 you can play anything you'd like)
Turn 1: 52
Turn 2: 51, Jace's Erasure
Turn 3: 50, They mill 1, 49
Turn 4: 48, They mill 1, 47
Turn 5: 46, They mill 1, 45, Jace, Memory Adept, Draw 1, They Mill 1, 44, Then mill 1 more, 43
Turn 6: 42, They mill 1, 41, Jace's Ability, Draw 1, They Mill 1, 40, Then mill 1 more, 39
Turn 7: 38, They mill 1, 37, Jace's Ability, Draw 1, They Mill 1, 36, Then mill 1 more, 35
Turn 8: 34, They mill 1, 33, Jace's Ultimate, Draw 20, They Draw 20, Then Mill 20, They go to 0 cards
(53+7=60 which is what they'd start with if they milled to 0. 33+7=40 If they draw 20 and Mill 20, that also equals 0. So no matter what they start with, they'd go to 0 cards)

Now think about this. There are a lot of ways to get Jace out earlier. The only two nonland cards played here are Jace and Jace's Erasure. If they play draw spells, they'll likely be at 0 cards earlier. If you play draw spells, they'll likely be at 0 cards earlier. You could play another Erasure, etc; (Since when do you only play 2 cards by the 5th-8th turn? See what I'm saying?)

My point is: Jace, if played right, isn't all that bad and can provide a fun win.

For me, I personally like him, he is a mill card to the max. his +1 ability gives you card advantage and mills...awesome. His 0 ability mills 10, that plus Bloodchief Ascension after getting its 3 or more counters, boom, mill 10 cards, lose 10 life, and you gain 10 life. Or, like I do, play him in EDH and run Doubling Season, bring him out, double his counters right off the bat, and there you have it, you draw 20 cards, and if you have no hand size, even better.

He is no Jace, The Mind Sculptor but he is also no Numai Outcast (lowest rated card on gatherer)

Im not much of a standard player but Legacy doesn't think much about Jace 3.0
In legacy mill 10 will most often kill you than help you unless you are milling yourself. At which point why would anyone use a 5 CMC planeswalker to millbthemselves when dredge does it for free.

Among the non graveyard based decks in legacy a large portion runs emrakul thus being immune to milling. Then there are aggro decks like merfolk who can just islandwalk and trample jace.

I don't know why people are complaining about the art. He ALWAYS looked like that. Don't complain about yours disinformation; go read the novels more before criticize the art!

But, I have to admit, he look like a Anime/Final Fantasy character, and thats is odd(but, face it, not too much) for Magic, but only purists to complain about that, because nobody complain about Figlio cartoony style, but when a more, lets say, "j@panese" style come to Magic, everyone start to have a sassy/spoiled child comportment.

You know, not everything will be the way you want. So calm down, a magic world is not only about western artwork, a fantasy world can be portraid in any style of artwork. Beliving that only western artwork is the ideal for RPG's in general is having a really closed mind.

I definitely like the card, but I must join the others in voicing my disapproval of his look. Because I don't follow novels or comics, I really didn't think Jace would look like Goku.

Anime is a form of art, while valid, has no place in the established style of Magic. Anime is a style that often lends itself to silliness, and Jace's stupid looking hairstyle is proof of that.

The cynic in me thinks that they're testing the waters to see if anime style would be a direction that fans would like/tolerate. The optimist in me hopes that this was just an isolated incident.

His hair is a tad too animesque for my taste. Must have used a lot of styling gel for that.

He might be useful with Gilder Bairn, but then again which Planeswalker isn't.
Well alright he's not a powerhouse, but at least this Jace is not dominating standard anymore, right?

Does Jace just HAVE to be a stereotypical pale-faced introverted intellectual emo anime wannabe?
It isn't just the look, it's the whole withdrawn arrogant attitude and flavor that reeks of Japanese-culture geek cliches.

The card itself is ridiculously powerful again, but safer this time than Jace II because it costs one more mana and is a combo enabler without the built-in ability to "defend itself". This Jace helps you rather than shellacking your opponent all by itself. The +1 is actually more powerful than Jace II, and it's great because it gives you the cards that you need to be good with the other two abilities. The other two abilities you need to build around; the 0 ability will either give you the flashback/ reanimator/ dredge/ other graveyard fodder your deck needs, or will start the mill on the opponent. The -7 will either for sure complete your graveyard-centric combo or finish off the mill on your opponent. Very powerful, but at the moment it seems safe to constructed and limited.

I do not get why you people think that milling for 10 on turn 4 or 5 is so great, when you try to mill as a win condition you have to remember that you have to compare your opponents deck size with his life total so instead of doing 20 damage you have to mill 60 cards, that is a 3-1 ratio. i know that they draw a card every turn and start with 7 in hand but all that means is that by turn 5 when you put this jace in play they have done about 3-4 damage to them selves with you doing little to no damage to them. Another thing that this ratio means that this Jace's 0 ability to mill 10 is a lightening bolt (10 cards milled = 3.3 damage) to their face every turn meaning that it is not a fast clock at all. I am not saying that it is not a win condition but it is also not in any way a card that you should be pooping your pants over like a lot of people seem to be doing..

Ok I know everyone hated the fact that JTMS ruined magic, but come on, this guy is amazing, not broken in some aspects, not lacking anything, to me personally i hope they keep him and 1.0 for the sheer sake of the fact that those two are amazing, and i got really upset when i just finished off my mill deck by adding jace in there to find out that baby jace wasn't gonna be in m12, i threw bananas and beans at everyone for being blasphemous about such an atrocity, but when i looked at this card, i was like, not bad, sure the mill doesn't exactly feel like what a normal blue deck so you gotta work around this card now and not use him as a utility/game finisher. But, this does make a mill crazy deck happy and proud, and now we have bell-tower and lure also, i am gonna be soo happy playing a blue/green mill deck. screw black, black doesn't have lure! But other than that, everyone who is hating the card for the artwork and because its Jace, well get over yourself. Jace became one of the icons of blue and magic all in itself. Unless you can come up with a better more relatable character than his personality and backstory, then by all means go to R&D and submit it and hope they change, but don't hate the poor kid. read the books to understand why he does what he does. I give him 4/5 because of the fact that he ain't perfect, but he gets the job done.

For some reason I get the impression that people saying his -0 is bad because it takes too long to mill your opponent to death are going to end up looking a lot like the people who said that Jace, the Mind Sculptor was a bad card because his -12 took too long to activate. (OK, probably not that bad, but in a similar vein.)

At this point, we have enough Innistrad spoilers to see the general themes. Flashback. Recursion. Cards that grow as your graveyard grows. Liliana of the Veil's +1 forcing everyone to discard. Garruk Relentless//Garruk, the Veil-Cursed having an Overrun that grows with your own graveyard (and a -1 that puts creatures there). Snapcaster Mage giving any instant or sorcery in you GY flashback (at it's original mana cost) until EOT. And Jace and his entire cycle can put cards into anyone's graveyard, as have all the milling cards we've seen from Innistrad. The writing's on the wall, folks. (God help us if we see Mortal Combat back in standard!)

It's time to get out of our M10/M11 mindset and start looking at the graveyard as a part of the game, not just the place where chump blockers and fetchlands go. Or were Surgical Extraction and Grim Lavamancer and Visions of Beyond and Noxious Revival not enough to get the point across?

It could turn out that I'm completely wrong on that, but I'd say it's reasonable to speculate. Look past the so-obvious-it's-painful applications for his abilities and think about how it will interact with the new environment. As for being 5 CMC, I don't see that being too much of a problem. It looks like as Innistrad rotates in and M11 and Zendikar rotate out, the game's going to slow down somewhat. In non-aggro decks, 5 wasn't even a deal-breaker to begin with if the effect was powerful, and with a slower format it should be no problem in most any midrange/control deck.

This is no where near as anime as the Japanese Jace Beleren from the Duel Deck. I bought the duel deck at a local hobby shop for the Jace deck and a load of trade stuffs from the Chandra deck, and both Walkers had a huge art overhaul. And I have to say, it looked pretty damn swell.

I lucked out on getting this one during Magic celebration day on my second pack when playing mini-master. I got greedy, thinking I could build around him when I only had 3 supporting blue cards (crappy ones at that).

So, I lost. But hey, I got a Jace, Memory Adept.

Jace Beleren: simple, non-flashy, and straightforward but solid and playable, a reflection of the fact that he's among the first of his card type.

Jace the Mindsculptor: Overpowered hyper competitive advantage machine. Cool idea gone wrong.

Jace, Memory Adept: more narrow in focus but imo the most fun of all three Jaces

This is actually really good, even in a non-milling deck. His +1 wins games solely off of sheer card advantage, and having milling as a backup plan is great! I use him in a self milling deck, and he is incredible! While I agree that he is not as overpowered as JTMS, he's definitely the most fun!

You both draw twenty but your opponent puts there top 20 cause of Jace's Erasure then use Jace's Archivist so you both discard 20 and draw twenty more
your opponent just went through there entire deck in one turn

Just because I haven't seen it written anywhere else yet in the comments...

I have a Blue/Green deck based around Splinterfright/Boneyard Wurm/Kessig Cagebreakers, with supporting cards such as Think Twice, Forbidden Alchemy, and Gnaw to the Bone (27 creatures, 60 cards).

If I can get this guy out on turn 5, mill myself for 10, and next turn, mill another 10... By the time I cast (or flashback) Gnaw to the Bone I'll almost certainly gain 20+ life, and it will also make my threats almost instantly lethal. Kessig will be lethal for sure, Splinterfright in 2 or MAYBE 3 turns, and Boneyard Wurm will at the very least cause them to chump block.

My friend also has a Blue/Red Burning Vengeance deck this could work very nicely with; with a deck themed around flashback, adding 10 cards to your graveyard is akin to drawing 10 cards... For 0 mana. With removal and counters he's fairly safe on the board and I think people are really underestimating his value. He might not be as strong as JTMC (what is?) but he's still very strong in the right deck.

Why is this card rated so low? Aside from the art, I mean. He's great in a mill deck and decent in any other blue deck. And against decks without enough life gain in multi-battles:

Psychosis Crawler, Jace -7 on me, I win.
Underworld Dreams, Jace -7 on everyone else, I win.

In a duel only: Niv-Mizzet, Jace-7 on me, I win.

Third: If this trend continues the next version of Jace will cost {4} {U} {U}
