the regeneration cost is kinda ridiculous. five life and one black mana? way to go. and that for a tiny 1/1 bushido 2 four-drop. i guess the fancy activation cost and not this card's color - creature type combination was the reason that caused this card to become uncommon ;)

I'd say this is worse than chimney imp.
So much about this card just doesn't make sense. Ok, add 1 CMC because it's a black samurai, fair enough. Ok, don't let it have regen for B because it's a human, not a zombie or troll or anything.
But even given those harsh restrictions, which would make the card pretty bad anyway, it should only be, say, CMC 3 1/1 bushido 2 with regen for 1B, or 0 mana and 3 life or something.
Seriously, what happened with this card? It's not just that it's bad, it's also /bizarre/. When do you ever seen a regen cost like that? Why does black get a bushido 2 1/1 anyway? What was the imagined purpose of this card, other than to be OBVIOUSLY bad?
Maybe that's it. Maybe they realised it was a bit naughty making cards that look good to newbies but are actually terrible, like wooden sphere, and decided to make a card that was offputting to EVERYONE.
Don't even get me started on the fact that this is uncommon. I guess we should be glad it wasn't a rare, huh?

I'm pretty sure that this card was designed when people at wizards got sick of players saying that paying life never mattered. It's a test to see how bad of payoff to life cost ratio it takes before no one is tricked into playing it.

Better than Wood Elemental in my opinion.. And the elemental is also rare.. Just a very very bad creature, but not the worst. Very weird card indeed. I'd like to point out another strange thing about this: shouldn't the flavour text be "... It kills more silently than age, more quickly than war"?? I mean, it's not so hard to kill more silently than a war... Is it?? And age doesn't kill soooo quickly in my book!.. mmmm... Maybe that's why he's an outcast: he just was not able to kill things! :D

The only possible use for this is if you want your life to be lowered. Magus of the Mirror? Throw in something like Phyrexian Unlife to sink below 0 and score an instant kill. But I'm sure there are better enablers for that sort of combo

Black will do anything to win, therefore it will pay and bleed you for 5 to keep your opponent on a 20-turn clock. This makes Wood Elemental, Aven Trooper, and Viashino Skeleton look good. And it will get you killed faster than any of the aforementioned creatures.

A regeneration cost like that might fly on something like Phyrexian Obliterator, but not for a blocker that occasionally pokes for a single point of damage.

Paying life for regenerate is a cool mechanic, but obviously R&D were overly cautious here. Rightly so, I suppose though. Yeah, this card sucks, but there were quite a few 'pay life' abilities made back in the day that get out of hand really easily. Good examples being Necropotence, Sylvan Library, Channel and Hatred. Obviously this card is no where near the level of the previously mentioned, but that's something to think about regarding paying life and balance.
It'd be nice to see "Pay X life: Regenerate" return as an ability on like an Angel or something. Even cooler if that creature had lifelink.
3/3 for is "hill giant" status. 1/1 with Bushido 2 of is much worse then a hill giant. + 5 life to regenerate is a terrible ability, especially to save your worse then hill giant creature. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Come on R&D. The flavor text is kind of stupid. More quickly than age? More silently than war? Is there anything fast about age or silent about war? I'm giving this card a 3 star rating though because of the overall flavor. She is an outcast that will "dishonor" herself to stay alive. She is a fool who will go to extreme lengths to stay alive and I think the ridiculous regeneration cost reflects her nature.

Actually, Numai's a swamp in Kamigawa where exiled and dishonored people go.
So what basically happened was "Hey man you need to regenerate me pay 5 life" and the response was "gtfo".
The name, art, and flavor really make me want to like this card.
The CMC-to-P/T ratio and the horrible regen cost make me want to use this as birdcage liner. And I'm not complaining just because it has a drawback. There are drawbacks and then there are horrible design mistakes.
Hell, if it were a two-drop or even a one-drop, I would play this. Just slap on an alternate regen effect (Ring of Xathrid comes to mind), and it would work fine. But as it is, even the ring can't help it.
TL;DR: This could have been good, but like a lot of Kamigawa, it fell flat on its face right out of the gate. Or in this case, right out of the swamp.
