these curse things are really going insane, disenchants, disenchants everywhere

Like Night of Souls' Betrayal... but only on your opponent! I remember the Night being very annoyed, so this is probably good.
Nice flavor text btw.

I had a chance to play this card in the pre-release, and it was always nice to have, and not too expensive either. It shuts down white token strategies and nerfs the rest, and gets rid of a lot of utility creatures. I had a bitterheart witch to help me tutor it, and this card is also synergistic with damage or -x/-x spells as well for board control. I imagine this is a very frustrating card to deal with. Although i do not know how effective it is in constructed, in limited it is a bomb in the right deck, probably red/black control with medium aggro.

It's definitely good against red/black aggro. I hadn't realized how many one toughness creatures were in my deck until this hit the board.

After seeing Invisible Stalker in what felt like every game at the prerelease, I plan on first-picking the shit out of this.
I'm not rating this card because I'm holding out... the first time I saw it I thought it was terrible, but some poeple seem to think it's good, and looking at it again, I think it's ok...
So I really don't know what to make of it.

Oh, the vorthos in me loves how there is a Bitterheart Witch in the art. Or at least thats what it looks like.

Overcosted for the effect.
Should have been uncommon, or 4 CMC.

This is a Good Card.
Ascendant Evincar effects are extremely powerful. White weenie, red goblins, and even green ramp will fall to this card (Llanowar Elves dies to this). Accessory creatures in black and blue (such as Typhoid Rats) are taken out as well. It's so much worse than a field-wipe as well, since the effect doesn't go away until it's removed, which is more difficult to do than removing Ascendant Evincar, Crovax, Ascendant Hero, or Elesh Norn.
I think it would've been nice if they printed it at so it could keep up with Day of Judgment, but as we can see with the power difference between Demons and Angels, black isn't supposed to keep up with white in massive destruction, it seems.

Way too overcosted, by the time it hits the board any token deck worth a grain of salt will have killed you, even in casual. Shame on Wizards on this one, should have costed 2-3.

Heartless Summoning, and this. Don't worry, I made us on equal footing. Oh, and did I mention my creatures cost less than yours? Just to be fair. Oh wait...

These can destroy your opponents game plan completely, or will at least weaken their creatures a bit. Get a couple out and they'll really do some damage. Anyone that thinks these are over-costed should consider Engineered Plague which isn't at all bad in itself.

should be sided in a lot of decks - wanna tap that Inkmoth Nexus, buddy? well then. better have a sword

Why is this rated .35 lower than Night of Souls' Betrayal? You spend 1 mana more to keep your creatures uneffected (essentially one mana for +1/+1 on all of your creatures) plus it's not legendary.

I love playing this card against Golem decks, especially if you run multiples. If you can get 4 of these on the field, you can take your own sweet time with killing your opponent, they won't be able to get much out. This is a SICK combo with Skinrender, because if somehow they get a stronger creature out on the field, you can STILL get them off the field, and NOW you have a 3/3 creature to hit them with.

@dontmess17, a sword will be no help against this, especially for inkmoths. They die as soon as they become creatures. No chance to equip.

I tend to follow this up with a massacre wurm, just for good measure.
While I don't agree with this costing less than 4 (come on people, it's one sided AND continuous), I do think they could have done this better. Hell, would a reprint of Night of Souls' Betrayal been out of flavor? With all the 1/1 spirit tokens dissipating, leaving their owners... They could have slapped on new art and called it a day.
I think this suffered from a common problem in new blocks. Forced mechanics. R&D is tasked with shoehorning X cards with the new mechanic (Curses, in this case) into the set. So they just borrow old cards and shift them slightly (+ due to curses being one sided) to try and make it work. The new card is never as good because not as much effort was put into it.
Look at Student of Warfare versus Figure of Destiny. Another is Taste of Blood and the return of Bloodthirst, though that was a more indirect example as it was a poorly made enabler. If you look hard enough, you can see what I mean in many cards (usually in the first set of a block) with a new mechanic.

Having two of these out would pretty much be curtains for any opponent. Throw in some other enchantments like heartless summoning to diversify the focus of removal or destruction, and you've got a somewhat playable card.

I would love to play in a meta where this card wasn't lurking in so many sideboards, this makes finishing off blue/black control agonizing. It's also unbelievably strong against wolf-run's secondary game.

@Occamsrazorwit: Night affects all players, not just one. Thus it's usually a bit more useful in multiplayer. But yes, this is a very nice alternative in 1-on-1.

White has a lot of spells that summon armies of 1/1s in the Innistrad block (like Gather the Townsfolk) and humans that leave behind 1/1 spirits after they die. This is more than a little effective for keeping those spells in your opponent's hand and not on the field. I can personally attest to the above sorcery, my opponent kept it in her hand for at least 5 turns when she really needed it. Totally sucks for token-driven decks without enough enchantment removal.

And to think that Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite has two of these and many other awesome features for CMC 7.

Oppponents can not play 1/1's or 2/1s or anything else with one toughness ,this really messed my goblin deck in FNM this evening .This dude played this and massacre wurm and it really shut me down .All my creatures would have -3/-3.

I love using this against white human decks(my deck's biggest and only weakness). Even if it doesn't kill of something, it helps by making sure I don't have to pay as much for Black Sun's Zenith.

My friends hate me when I play this card on them. It completely shuts down weenie decks and most utility one drops are out. Plus, playing this when they have */1 creatures out enables my morbid triggers like blood artist and skirsdag high priest. Play more than one of them on an opponent and lose friendships!

good example here of why black is my color. i enjoy dealing death, especially to damn weenie decks. as others have mentioned, this card is a major pain to many-a-deck. two or more of these on the battlefield downright disables some decks: lingering souls, zombies, snapcaster, most rdw creatures, humans, invisible stalker (if you can catch him before he gets pumped by spells), etc. sadly, death's hold sucks against non-weekie decks with fatties. you can swap appropriately with Mutilate or Black Sun's Zenith. if it wasn't less effective against certain cards then it would be overpowered. as steven wright says: "you can't have everything... where would you put it?"
3 is fair because:
1. it's a permanent and enchantment is the toughest type to remove 2. counters are permanent, not end-of-turn only 3. affects opponent's creatures only, not your own 4. it's black 5. there are enough damn black 4-drops
solid ability. sweet artwork. excellent flavor. now, if the card remained at 3 but dealt -2/-2 instead... mwahahaha. that would get a five-star rating. i'm fine with it as is though.
