this is funny when using it in a sliver deck that runs queens... five color goodness

Mox Diamond seems better to me. I'd rather discard a land than something I put in a deck because I needed it. I have two sitting in my binder.

It's true that Mox Diamond is better, for many reasons, but chrome is extended-legal, and that's what counts. I use 4 in my Dragonstorm deck, imprinting Kokusho or Bogardan Hellkite that I'd never play from my hand. Wonderful mana boosting.

This card is awesome. Imprint it onto a Multicoloued card and chose what colour you want. And for free? Youc an't go wrong.

It's best value lies in either dumping a multi colour card or playing it in a mono deck - 2 or 3 colour decks will likely suffer with this card, as you will face the dilemma of choosing which type of mana you won't need after tossing a card...

It's good yes, but I don't like giving up a half or more of my hand on the first turn unless it means something.

I just realized the art in this card references Escher's Self Portrait. That just makes this card all the more awesome!

With the Eldrazi out, you can now imprint a card and still get no mana.

Ironic that this card is in a block which doesn't contain at least one multicolored card.^^

Not as good as the Mox Diamond, remove from the game is one mechanic I avoid like the plague.

Diamond or Chrome? What do really want that Magic word 'Mox' for? Reduced land count = more spells = more stuff to throw when you combo out your deck into their face.

But really...the downsides are usually more than you want to pay. willing to pay, I can see. glad to pay? nope. the real 'golden mox'...is Lotus Petal.

@Astronautic_Bullfrog Now that I'm looking at this closely, the reflection in the Mox reminds me of Mirari. Drawn by the same guy, too.

Weird.

@nORMAL00 I'm confused, you said it would do well in multicolor decks and then said it wouldn't be that good in 2 to 3 color decks. I'm pretty sure most people would consider a 3 color deck multicolor...

As for the Mox, 5/5. I also like Mox Diamond more, but it doesn't hurt when you're farther into the game and you draw your Boros Recruit or something like that to discard it for this.

Wait it says "The removed card is imprinted on this Artifact" right?? So tell me this, if I play this and choose.. it doesn't matter, any thing, let's say Venser, the Sojourner.. Does that mean I now have an artifact that taps for either Island or Plains, PLUS its still a Planeswalker that has all the abilities and what not and all of that happened for free?? Other than exiling the hard copy of it?? If so, this puppy is sick NASTY!!

@Mike-C: No... you exiled Venser, so he's not in the game anymore. The Chrome Mox can tap for Blue/White. It doesn't do anything else, it doesn't somehow become a copy of the Venser that you exiled.

Only clever players understand Chrome Mox does not neccesarely have to be worse then Mox Diamond, they're just both made for different strategies. In fast, aggressive decks, Chrome Mox can replace land spots in trade for speed, which leaves more room for other aggressive cards in their deck. And you do not have to imprint a card when played, so it can be fodder for a well timed Shrapnel Blast.

Soooo... What happens if you exile Misthollow Griffin, then later cast it from exile?

Does the Imprint fail and the Chrome Mox "goes dead" (just as if you imprinted nothing)? Or does it continue to give blue mana?

Also, from the wording, I assume you should imprint Eldrazi...

I never liked this or mox diamond drawback. Ive never been a tourney player either.
I guess its great with Blue card draw, to replace the lost cards and still be ahead of your opponent.

...Why would you ever imprint Sliver Queen? Just for mana?

Give me your Sliver Queen right now. You are not worthy to possess her.

@Lord_of_Tresserhorn

I believe Misthollow Griffon could be casted from exile without damaging the imprint effect, Mox still produces mana.

No, you'd break the Mox doing that. From imprint's rulings:

"If all cards exiled by an imprint ability somehow leave the exile zone, or if a card isn't exiled by an optional imprint ability, or if the ability failed to exile a card because it was countered, then it is possible for an imprint ability to have no exiled card to refer to. In this case, the linked ability associated with the imprint ability has no card values to refer to and will only do as much as possible. It may do nothing at all."

Imprint needs to be able to refer to the imprinted card with each use, or it will function as though no card has been imprinted. In which case:

12/1/2004 If no card is imprinted on Chrome Mox, the Mox can't add mana to your mana pool. It can't add colorless mana to your mana pool.

@ Kaleidostorm

if you are running more than one in you main deck or running wishes and have one in your sideboard then you would be fine imprinting the queen, overlord, or legion. but theres really no need if your doing it right. (gemhide, basal, heart, queen) infinate sliver/coloured mana stop when you want to, then swing for the win.

Ok i want to ask something. Why is Diamond considered better than Chrome? Because of the spell discard against land discard? Chrome is mana advantage AND mana acceleration, while Diamond is just mana acceleration.
Imagine this:
Opening hand with 2 lands and either Chrome or Diamond
Chrome:
1st turn: Put land down, put Chrome down 2 mana total
2nd turn: Put second land down 3 mana total
Diamond:
1st turn: Put land down, put Diamond down 2 mana total
2nd turn: 2 mana total
Chrome seems better right? I know that with it you have 1 spell less, i get that but considering that you have more spells than lands in a deck AND that you are most likely running some kind of fetchland, doesnt this mean that you are more likely to draw a dead Diamond rather than a dead Chrome?

To be honest i think that Lotus Petal is way better suited to be compared to Diamond than Chrome.

I've found it much more difficult to use this card than the Mox Diamond. In the formats where these are playable, decks are typically loaded with artifacts, so you end up with very little choice in what to imprint. Often you end up drawing this and the only thing you can imprint is something you really really don't want to throw away. On the other hand, with the Mox Diamond, it's much more common that you draw some land you don't need (for example, playing urzatron you might draw two power plants in the opening hand).

I agree that there are certain decks where the Chrome Mox will do better. If you are playing a deck with only one or two colors, and less artifacts, you can pretty much sub the chrome mox in for land.

Why the Chrome Mox is better than the Mox Diamond.

You can run 4 Chrome Moxes without topdecking absolute worthlessness. A chrome mox can be dropped empty for a Tinker or Shrapnel Blast. Running in combination with Mox Opals and you will most likely not have enough lands to throw away. In the Vintage scene, cheap card draw is easy to come by, especially in blue.

Unless you're playing Land Tax or extremely land-heavy decks like Land's Edge, the Chrome Mox is going to outperform the Mox Diamond and the Mox Opal nearly every time.

Every deck is built with cards that are better if drawn at a later stage in the game. That's what tutors and Scrying is for. In an opening hand, it's almost always preferable to keep your two or three lands.

@Necrolyte
Because Diamond is discard and this is imprint. The graveyard is easy to abuse and the diamond can change color mid game, which is nice. That said, Diamond decks add more lands to compensate and Chrome decks use the mox as land, so have less land.

Chrome => Stompy/Aggro
Diamond => Control or Mid-range

Why? Control and midrange decks need mana sooner than later so they can either do multiple things or make it to their creatures early enough. Chrome on the other hand says "let's do this now!" You treat it like a land and beat the other person down ASAP with your 2-drops.

Certain control cards have to get in place very quickly too, such as Chalice of the Void and Counterbalance. Chrome can also be used where Diamond can't when you *must* make your two-drop T1; such as against combo with Thalia or something.

That said, combo still avoids it because lotus petal and lion's eye diamond are things

Hehehe, choose a non-artifact, non-land card that is all colors for the imprint ability: becomes Tap: Add 1 mana of any color to your mana pool.
RedJaron

@Necro, you're basing that off the idea that you only have two land. What says you don't draw another during T1 or T2? What if you start with three land in your hand? You're not considering a lot of other situations.

Basically, the Diamond ( generally ) is preferable because it's simple. Drop the diamond, discard a land, you get instant five-color goodness, period. And if you want to reclaim the land, the graveyard is relatively easy to interact with, as opposed to exile.

Chrome is dependent on what you have in your hand. If you want it for mana fixing, it depends on what colors you have in your hand at the time. And while you can reclaim a discarded land, reclaiming the exiled imprint renders the Crome worthless for mana. That's not to say a Chrome is never preferable to a Diamond. Dropping an empty one for metalcraft and sacrificing is great for some decks. But for basic mana acceleration and fixing, the Diamond is usually the better choice.
