At the very least it should've put the artifact straight into your hand.

Basically wizards just hates dragons.

Not...terrible. It's an expensive semi-tutor or an air elemental. But it's not that great, either.

But with all the exile removal itll be baddish in limited. Unless you beat face with it first.

meh, its alright; not as bad as everyone thinks

the exiled artifact is sposed to pose a threat, so in other words its either
-get pounced by a 4/4 every turn or
-deal with the Darksteel Colossus or Platinum Angel on the other side

btw, I GOTS A QUESTION
If you bounce this, then resummon it and exile another artifact, do both the previously exiled artifact and the 2nd exiled artifact come into play
AND
Do you have to reveal the exiled artifact?

Scars of Mirrodin is right around the corner. This has the look of an investment piece to me. For an example of a mediocre rare that became awesome overnight, see Sovereigns of Lost Alara

I don't know... I don't think he's the worst, that's for sure. It seems to me that he was designed to give your opponent a choice: he can either take his hits from this guy (and, to be sure, 4 points of power in the air ain't exactly something to shake a stick at) or kill this thing (with the abundance of removal in Standard right now) and let you get a useful piece of tech. For putting your opponent in that (potentially) difficult situation, I think that this card is alright. Maybe a 4 or 3.5 out of 5.

Guntz1092, when you returned the dragon to your hand, the artifact would not remain "attached" to the dragon, because when the dragon is returned to your hand and played again, it comes back as an entirely different casting of the card. As long it goes to the graveyard the second time, you would get the second artifact. So- no two artifacts for you.

Second, all exiled cards are revealed face-up unless the card specifically says face-down.

It's a pretty good card, though Scars of Mirrodin will determine its usefulness. Right now, 3.5/5.

Great Art Lame Card The Artifact Should Go Right Into Play Or Atleast When The Dragon Comes Into Play Tutor The Artifact Instantly So Their Isnt So Much Stupid Wording On A Card That Shouldnt Deserve It Even In Limited Air Servant Trades With It But Than Again Its Probably A Guaranteed Crystal Ball Or Triskelion But In Casual And Standard NO WAY! They Were Way To Safe With The Desing And Yeah Wizards Hates Dragons Except In Shards Block Or Atleast Part Of It Overlord Predator And Broodmate Plus Even Flameblast Destroyed

Is put into play when It dies that OP. To your hand seems very lackluster. When in most situations you wouldn't be able to self sac it until your next turn. So basically you tutor an artifact for 5. There are so broken artifacts but a way to cheat one out on turn 6 is basically the same time a dedicated artifact would do it in.

This however is sure going in myBrion Stoutarm edh deck. No the most broken play in the world.

I greatly doubt artifacts in scars will be running red mana. I could be wrong. There have been red flavored artifacts in the past but most arn't that great. The fact that he isn't an artifact himself doesn't help the cause.

2/5 Room for improvement. However the art is really BA.

You could enchant it with Splinter Twin and use it on your opponent's turn as a sort of repeatable Fabricate.

i can't rip 3 packs without getting one of these guys. i want it to be good, but it's just not. maybe there will be a card in scars: 2, tap - put target exiled artifact onto the battlefield. am i delusional because i have 9 of these? probably.

I have just realized why this is actually a good card. Say your running a deck that has multiple bombs in it and sword of vengeance. Play this guy and exile the sword, and it will give your opponent an ultimatum. Either kill the 4/4 with flying, and let you have the sword, or leave the 4/4 with flying on the field and try to win the game without killing it. I honestly cannot see a favorable choice, there, can you?

And suddenly, it got a whole lot better.
Seriously, one of the best artifact search spells in the post alara environment. True, it has to die first for you to get your bomb-y artifact, but frankly, beating with a 4/4 flier is nice too.

This card is a LOT better than people realize.

1. ANY effect that searches out a card from your library is good, even if you don't get the card immediately, or if the kinds cards you can search is limited (See Gifts Ungiven, Tezzeret, and Trinket Mage)
2. You get a search effect in red- a color which almost NEVER has search effects.
3. The search effect is attached to a 4/4 with flying.

More importantly, to me at least, this card is just fun and flavorful. You put your opponent in a position in which they either deal with getting hit by a 4/4 flyer, or give you the artifact of your choice. Plus, the art is awesome, and the dragon is obviously inspired by The Hobbit.

Some good artifacts for the dragon to target are Mimic Vat, Basilisk Collar (for interactions with Cunning Sparkmage) and Wurmcoil Engine. Or, for awesome flavor, search out Steel Hellkite.

Splinter Twin doesn't work, the token it creates is EXILED at the end of turn.

You would need, say, a Viscera Seer or something similar, to send it to the graveyard instead.

Interacts favorably with Sarkhan the Mad's dragon-focused abilities. Among other things, it can tutor for Steel Hellkite or Ratchet Bomb in a pinch.

We Don't complain about 6 for a 5/5 and an ability so why so much hate for this? One colourless more than the dragon whelp for +2 power (4 power makes it a threat) and a semi-useful tutoring ability. At the worst in a dragon deck like mine this draws hate so you can put your bigger dragons in the next turn with one fewer answer to worry about.

I give it a 5/5 because it's a staple in my deck.

With Fabricate out, this is probably the only way to tutor a 2cmc+ artifact that I can think of in standard (other than Diabolic Tutor, but that's not the point).

@Eric1618: tutoring up a Steel Hellkite would be awesome flavour ^_^

I don't think many people are seeing the full potential of this card. I didn't either when i first saw it, "O great, Red Air Elemental plus a weird Trinket Mage-ish effect". Then i realized that I could play Hoarding dragon "and easy turn 3 in a ramp deck", choose Steel Hellkite or Wurmcoil Engine, and put my opponent into a fork: either get beat over the head fo 4 every turn, or kill it and meet a bettr threat. Yes, exiling or bouncing it will stop the effect, but most forms of removal involve killing it. I also love the syngergy with another of my favorite underrated cards, Sarkhan the Mad. Play hoarding on turn 3, attack on turn 4, then sack it for 2 5/5's (one of which with a rachet bomb attached), then ulti for 10 on turn 5. thats 14 damage by turn 5, and not to hard if your running a 4 of of, say, Birds of Paradise

*Edit: Actually, misread the ability, but still a very strong card

@ HuntingDrake:

Because drakes aren't smart enough to find useful things.

Also, I like how this is basically a timeshifted Air Elemental that has a practical use besides being an overcosted meat shield.

Splinter Twin doesn't work because the token itself finds a different card to exile. You can't get the card you exiled with the first dragon by killing a token that's a copy of Hoarding Dragon. Also, if you tried to blink the same Hoarding Dragon into play, he'd be treated as a different copy of the card each time and his graveyard trigger would do nothing.

flavourful and quite handy. If you think about it, he is actually an ideal target for Sarkhan the Mad's second ability, basically turning it into a Tutor-to-hand and +1/+1 pump effect.

or alternatively (and I've done this with a smirk):

"yes, I'll block your Grave Titan, then Lightning Bolt it. Oh, my turn is it? Say hello to Steel Hellkite, and goodbye to your Zombie tokens."

I like it, can score a free draw, instead of it going into your hand it keeps it as incentive not to just destroy the dragon, I think its a good, solid card, its not amazing, but I think it is good.

It will go into allot of my decks as I normally play with allot of sac effects to fizzle my opponents spells so i won't usually have the drawback from the dragon getting exiled.

A lot of people seem to be bemoaning this creature.

I don't get it - maybe it's because Scars block is here and I can see - Blightsteel Colossus

So deal with my 4/4 Flyer or my 12/12 Trample/Infect/Indestructible monster.

Even if you only use it to trade up to a 6/6 Wurmcoil Engine if the Engine then goes they've still got a pair of 3/3s to deal with.

And that's just in Standard.

I've seen the 2/2 creature used very effectively in this role - do I kill it and they trade up or leave it and take the 2?

Off the top of my head:

-Bounce this card and counter it the next time they play it
-Exile it (Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile, Condemn, Oblivion Ring)
-Re-shuffle it into their library (Spin into Myth)

I can think of no less than a dozen different ways to death with this card that will also deny the player the artifact. Maybe I'm biased because I most frequently play white and blue, but this card gets little love from me.

combine with any Cup or Chalice shaped artifact and this is totally even more Smaug-like than he was 5 minutes ago. If that's even possible! :D

Tolkien wrote the book ON WRITING THE BOOK on....everything. This is the most Tolkien-y Dragon you will ever see. Ergo, this should be one of the most well-loved cards in Magic.

WHY ISN'T IT!?!?!??! people maybe need to put their cards down and read more books....:P

Yeah, Tolkien ripped the Hobbit from Beowulf pretty obviously, but I'll bet you a zillion of anything you want that the Hobbit movie will be better than the Beowulf movie. You may define what 'zillion' means. Beowulf is good in its own right, no lie. Tolkien just made it even better.

It's a TUTOR, and even more, an ARTIFACT TUTOR, in red of all colors. I know it makes a lot of sense flavor-wise, but this breaks the color pie even more than Planar Chaos and New Phyrexia together.
It's a nice creature to play - a 4/4 flier for 5 is a bit underwhelming, but playable. Just make sure not to tutor anything you desperately need, because if it gets bounced or exiled your trinket gets lost forever.

I have caused so much stress and grief with this guy it's not even funny. Forget the fact that you're essentially getting a free tutor for a sec.. I run 2 of this in a deck with Shimmer Myr and a few other decent artifacts and one of em isn't even THAT good, but of course your opp will think, scratch that, KNOW that it's something insane and what that does is.. 2 things actually. 1. Gives staying power based on sheer fear to a 4/4 flyer. And 2. Even if 1 somehow can't happen (ie- your opp is facing death if he's not removed), it makes them fear what's coming next and they know you (more than likely) have the mana to play it at that point. When I have shimmer Myr out (who's really a bluff to be dealt with keeping my other guys safe more than anything else), it's almost always the same case, my opp sits there saving his/her mana to try and bluff me into thinking that they have some sort of instant counter/artifact hate magic just waitin! The funny thing is, I almost never NEED the artifact I tutored as 75% of the artifacts in this bluff deck are only to help disguise the bluff even better. And by them saving mana they could be playing spells with to help win the game, it grants me juuust enough time to slowly chip away at them until i'm in place FTW! Sometimes when I play shimmer Myr and this guy is already in the graveyard, I get to have sooo much fun F'ing with them by doing NOTHING other than just sit back with a calm and confident look about me while I watch my opp squirm turn after turn wondering if I tutored that or if I need/want it for what I tutored! lol.. It's a LOT of fun to play with this guy and this deck rarely loses to anyone who doesn't know what I've created out of their own fear.. And when/if they finally "get it" it's almost ALWAYS too late to save them anyway ;) 5/5, easy..

So good. I really like the card. Some people say it breaks the colour pie, and it sort of does, but it definitely doesn't break the flavour of a dragon.

For me? I use it in my Tajic EDH deck which features a ton of board wipes (to abuse his indestructibility) and essentially turns my board wipes into a tutor effect. It also allows me to tutor out powerful equipment for Tajic, carry equipment while it's alive (and fly with it), and enables battalion.

5/5 from me. It's not that strong, but that's the point. It's good if you make it good.

Fetching up anything from Sol Ring to Eldrazi Monument to Skullclamp to Rings of Brighthearth to Blightsteel Colossus are all legitimate plays in EDH. There are a lot of sweet artifacts in older formats worth tutoring for, and the great thing about it is, in multi-player you can't just attack into it if you put something crazy under it.

What one of my r/w decks does with this is get sword of light and shadow then trading post. Just tutor up all the artifacts from the deck and laugh whenever they wipe the board or try to destroy something. Solid card, I don't recommend putting it in random edh decks though.
