Seriously looks like a Final Fantasy character. Love the artwork. He's probably the most original and creative planeswalker "design-wise" to date.

how to break in 2 easy cards
souls of the faultless
valor made real

force them to attack with everything, block it all with souls of the faultless and laugh as they commited suicide. doubt it'll be as fun as doing that to the guy who myr incubated me whilst he had coat of arms out he wasn't pleased when he lost 1,600 life cause and the rest of the players at the table weren't happy when i beacon'ed myself to 3,200 life won't be as fun as that but i'll try none the less with this card

best bit is most timmy's will not see any point in it beyond it being a plainwalker...although i think i'm about to double its price tag...its +loyalty ability can win you the game...as it forces everything to attack gideon himself. there is no choice meaning that once they are all tapped out from attacking gideon and promptly killing him you can simply attack with your amassed army...not bad for the ability your supposed to spam to add counters to it. sorry for the extra $10 bucks your gonna have to pay now

Dear.
Freaking.
God.

So unbelievably good.

This card simultaneously appeals to everyone.

Aggro: Your alpha swing next turn is guaranteed, as they have no blockers.
Control: You have a wrath-proof undamageable 6/6.
Combo: Their next alpha swing is moot.

Lightmine Field. Make them all attack and die. Then, you have three options. Attack with him alone, attack with other creatures as well if they can take the heat, or get rid of your mines and attack with everything!

Soldier decks, rejoice!! Elspeth, your fiancee is here!!
HAHA!!
I like the way he gets on the battlefield, once he gets bored just standing beside you and admiring the carnage you have done, and what your opponents have done... He's all like "screw this, I wanna go where the fun is, CHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGE!!"
SorianSadaskan
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.5/5.0) (1 vote)
His first first ability is already terrifying enough for your opponents to wanna blast him off the board. He can literally provoke a bunch of whinnies to attack while you decisively dispatch them off with your blockers. The second ability is useful, though the first ability will be usedmostly. The last ability allows him to thrash your oppoenent without fear of been damaged, though do be mindful of the destroy creature effect, or Path of Exile.

Oh, and he most certainly had your opponents by the balls.

★★★★☆ (4.2/5.0) (6 votes)
@Florg: They made it so planeswalker abilities still have the "sorcery/once per turn" restriction even when copied just to avoid shenanigans like that.

@EvilCleavage: Like manlands (usually), he only becomes a creature on your turn, and the vast majority of wrath effects are Sorceries.

I believe Gideon may be the best card in the set (though I'm not prepared to give him the title quite yet). He rocked every prerelease game he hit the field in, and those decks weren't built for him. He would be an absolute monster next to a Day of Judgment.
metalevolence
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
@Tanaka: I'm fairly sure the rule is activated abilities of planeswalkers can only be activated once per turn and when you can play a sorcery, but if a creature gains the activated abilities of a planeswalker, they can be activated like any other activated ability of a creature, and creatures aren't affected by any loyalty counters they may have. Or did they change all that?

I really like this card.. I actually find lightmine field to not be the most amazing combination, since it would take a lot of creatures in play to even kill off something like a malakir bloodwitch, but it has such interesting combinations it makes a great combo piece.

Mostly red cards are great with this, such as kazuul tyrant of the cliffs, and fumiko. Lust for war is a nifty enchantment that works well in this regard as well.

I think people might over hype gideon for a while too, since he doesn't fit in every deck, and his ultimate is pretty awesome, but isn't that far removed from indestructibility which isn't really a big threat right now with consuming vapors, cruel edict, path to exile, iona's judgement, and many others. Also note it says damage only, not if it gets terminated or etc.

Having said all that, love the abilities, killing a tapped creature is a really nice effect on a planeswalker, the first ability is fantastic for walls, and the ultimate never hurts since you can follow up a day of judgement with 6 damage.

Note that he is a soldier, so anything that gives + soldiers (which is a lot of cards btw, whole set of tribal soldier cards including captain of the watch), works with gideon. Secondly, might want to point out that permafrost trap, deathbringer liege, reality spasm, and sleep work excellently with his destory ability.

Both this and Sarkhan the Mad refer to themselves as "himself" where other cards say "itself". I guess WotC really want planeswalkers to stand out, with those special frames and parts of the picture overlapping it.

Anyway, nice card. His plus can either be a Fog, or open up for an alpha strike, or just set up for his minus. And the minus... well, the guy's removal! His "ultimate" is weird, but both powerful and fun. I want to see what a "guyed" Gideon looks like in Magic Online.

his +2 ability becomes retardedly good with lightmine field.
WhiteyMcFly
★☆☆☆☆ (1.0/5.0) (4 votes)
Once again, white removal, with a control element. Using the final ability is a little bit risky, but could be a game winner. just watch out for Doom Blade or Terminate.

by the way, this planeswalker is strictly better than Garruk Wildspeaker. It can finish the game the turn it comes out instead of the turn after.
Tarmin
★★★☆☆ (3.0/5.0) (1 vote)
@WhiteyMcFly: And how can he do it? Which of his three abilities let you win in the same turn he enters the battlefield? Force to attack -> next turn. Assassinate (or Vengeance) can't destroy a blocker. And when he turns into a creature, he's affected by summoning sickness. So, he doesn't let you win in the same turn, but the turn later, as Garruk.

I would have preferred a version with less loyality(4) and a greater bonus for the first ability (+4). Last but not least, the last ability should have transformed him into a */* creature whereas * = number of loyality counter.

I don't know how good he'd be in control, considering you can't use his creature form to block. From what I remember, you can only play planeswalker abilities as sorceries, which means he can only be a creature during your turn.

I don't see how it's all that great. But then again I run every color but white...
But at the same time, my friend played this against me 3 games in a row and I still won with ease, dragons w/ sarkhan the mad and doubling season w/ some other typical jund and a lil' grixis for ol' bolas.

First time when he forced an attack my dragons killed it then I dropped a voracious dragon consumed some arsonist killed his best guy and had big defender

Second time he attacked w/ the 0 and I terminated as any jund would

third time he tried to kill my tapped hellkite overlord... Regenerated, dropped a bolas and killed for +3

played a few other times against me but those are the most notable examples.

Not trying to brag just saying he's easy to kill, besides w/ eldrazi annihalator all attacking doesn't seem like a good idea, not to mention suicidal charge does the same thing but better.

EDIT: although this does work well with lightmine field, what about vigilance? Alot easier to come by.
Also not saying he's not good, just not THAT good 4/5 not 40/5 you know?

OK seriously now.
His +2 ability is good only with decent blockers in certain situations.

the -2 not worth playing a planeswalker for imo. Imperial assassin anyone?

now the 0 ability. Its good considering you get a 6/6 undamagable for 5.

I think gideon is a good card well worth the mythic rarity however imo he sucks as a planeswalker compared to jace new and old and elspeth.

He gets five for flavor.

Have a few things to add:

"Blowing up tapped creatures is mainly a black ability." Actually not, blowing up creatures period is black. Tapped destruction is a white thing, it always has been sort of "punishment for attacking" flavor wise.

"still waiting for yawgmoth planeswalker, pls just implode all these stupid planes and go back to dominaria"

While Yawgmoth did use technology to traverse the planes, he is not a planeswalker. He never was.

Interested to see if he makes a splash in T2. Surprisingly, R&D made him a control card. ( Also has an amazing top-down design.) With WU control taking over T2, I'm anticipating his debut onto the scene. 3.5/5 for now. We'll see.

★★★☆☆ (3.0/5.0) (2 votes)
The +2 is incredible, in my opinion. Many times, I've been in a situation where I wish the opponent would attack, so battle would be on my terms, not theirs. If you have things like indestructible Palace Guards, you have no worries. The -2 is obviously a response to the +2.

But the 0 is where he shines. In a set where Eldrazi loom overhead, people forget about the Soldier decks from M10. If you stick him in there, he's pumped, has Vigilance, First Strike, and whatever other tricks you may have for soldiers (there are . . . a few).

@pixieCrack

Why can afford him, you ask? I can. He's about 4$ when he comes in a booster. That's how I got Kalitas, Lorthos, Lotus Cobra, Sorin Markov, Elvish Pipers, Darksteel Colossus, Liliana Vess, Garruk, Jace, Admonition Angel, Xathrid Demon, and most of my other stuff. Fat-packs are also pretty nice investments for 35$ a piece.

By far the best planeswalker though Garruk is one mana cheaper and Jace the mind sculptor is great too (but blue isn't really a good color these days). Gideon can control the opponent so easy and after one +2 ability he is at 8 counters amazing. I think he takes Garruk down though green got mana accelerating and that can make Garruk come out fast and use he's ultimate just one turn after, but if you dropped Gideon in the turn after he dropped Garruk his ultimate is not that a big thread. Together with Elspeth he gets even more fun Him and Elspeth (she got very amazing powers too) are my fav. planeswalkers.

I like how he's so different from the other planeswalkers. He has no true "ultimate", all of his abilities are available on the get-go. Pretty much drop him, kill a tapped creature, wait for your next turn to beat face. Practically a one-man army, which might be the point of his character. Epic.

Except it's not targeting any of your creatures. It's targeting you, the player. Doesn't matter if your creatures have Shroud. They still have to attack if able. The only way to prevent that +2 from affecting you is to have some means of making you untargetable. Leyline of Sanctity is a good example.

It might seem weird from a flavor perspective why he'd be a 6/6 (since most humans tend to be 1/1s or 2/2s, maybe 3/3 at best). But it makes sense if you think about what it reflects about him - he's just that epic of a fighter that he can go toe to toe with massive Titans, Demons, Beasts, etc and actually win!

When this card was newly printed, I'd been reading a lot of comments about this is going to be the weakest of the planeswalkers cards. How things have changed.

w/o this card UW control, Caw Go, Caw Blade, and UWR Blade (four decks that are currently dominating Standard and Extended on many tournaments) would be weak. This is the MVP card of many UW control decks. this card is so effective that Jace, the Mind Sculptor has been relegated to Brainstorm.

I've tried this with my Boros, my Naya, my UGW, my GW, my BW (Vampires and Angels), my Elven deck (yes this work wonders for mono green), and my mono white decks, it works wonders. For me, it's the best plainswalker card so far!

Same cost as Elspeth, with two more counters, the ability to force someone to tap (unless it has vigilance), and then survive it? And that's only two of his abilites? His last ability alone would make him a great "Captain" for a white deck, but altogether, he is downright amazing.

He's also way cooler than Ajani, so I'm glad he's taking his place in the 2012 lineup.

This card is stupid. None of the abilities are even flavorfully in white. His + ability is red, his - ability is black, and his 0 ability is an artifact ability.

I really hate what WIzards has done with white. It's the new blue, in that it gets everything no matter how little sense it makes.
Veritus7
★★★★☆ (4.1/5.0) (9 votes)
@Shadow1798 His abilities are very white. Take a look at Vengeance. That is an old card, that mechanic belonged to white long before black. If his + ability just made creatures attack without provoking them to himself (a selfless move, very frequently observed in white), then I would agree it's a red ability. If Gideon Jura were an inanimate object who became a soldier, then I would agree his last ability is an artifact ability. Clearly this isn't the case; he's stepping down from his pedestal as a mighty planeswalker and submitting himself personally to the battlefield (which, if you knew anything about Gideon Jura in the story, this is very characteristic of him).

Is really nice card, for everyone who tell that this card is wunerable to removal after turn to creature I just have the one answer, If you know to play Mtg you wont never use this card knowing that this is risky manouver without give him some protection and get guarant that he will deal damege and survive. So, you need to use his last ability when oponents dont have cards on hands or you have some handy counterspells to protect. This planeswalker can kick others planeswalkers asses, he can become equiped and been used on ofensive moves or defensive manouvers. He enter to the game with insanely lot of loyalty counters, 6, what makes him real real threat. + 2 ability clean oponets blockers, so, your horde will have no trouble to deal with oponent. - 2 will make oponet been ***ed off using his tronger creature to atack you or tap it for ability. 0 is kickass ability, you can use it ass finisher after clean the table with day of judgement or simply he can be the only man who can save your skin if all other soldiers you own has meet they antient relatieves.
Really nice card, I am giving 4,5.

my favorite play would have to be when my buddy activates him, I steal him with act of aggression and tap my bazaar trader to keep him. he's not a happy camper after that.

Edit: Now that Cawblade is gone from standard. I'm not as hateful toward Gideon. He is a good solid planeswalker.

Gideon is the best control card in my oppinion. It really lock down your opponent and when you have it down you feel like you are really in control of the game.

I remember A buddy of mine got this and he asked me that if he made Gideon a creature if he would be vulnerable to doom blade. I said I think so. So he became a creature and I doombladed him... His face was...PRICELESS!!!

When he first came out, Gideon was a pretty unconventional planeswalker in that he had no 'ultimate' and all three of his abilities could be used the turn he hit the table (though, you probably wouldn't want to use his 0 on the first turn unless you had some way of giving him haste). They completely got it right with this card...his counterpart in Rise, on the other hand, while not bad, is somewhat lackluster in terms of playability. Gideon's a game-changer with synergistic, relevant abilities and an awesome starting loyalty. He saw plenty of play in his Standard debut and for good reason, especially considering how nicely he plays with the other planeswalkers running around at that time...who will remain nameless.

There are situations, though, when Gideon doesn't do very much. I remember one long EDH game in which my opponent and I got into a stalemate of sorts. He had Michiko Konda, Truth Seeker equipped with Darksteel Plate and Serra's Blessing on the battlefield. I just had Gideon. I think it took five turns for one of us to draw an answer...

You can't doom blade him when he's a soldier because of this line "he is still a planeswalker" only planeswalker removal can kill him even with that last ability

@At0micPickle
Notice how Doom Blade doesn't say "Destroy target nonblack, nonplaneswalker creature?" Yeah, if he's a creature, he's vulnerable to creature removal, just like an Inkmoth Nexus that becomes a creature dies to creature removal, artifact removal OR land destruction.
