There were so many good artifacts that just became illegal in standard, why the hell wasn't this one of them? This card is pitiful in just about every format and on top of that its uncommon; why? A more important question: why didn't Wizards bring back Loxodon Warhammer? It was expensive but it was also an amazing hell of a card! Why, why, why?

Eh...not amazing, but certainly not terrible. It's okay late-game to put your opponent on a clock. Recurring burn is nothing to scoff at, even if it comes at a rather high price. Just look at Cursed Scroll: Crank any of the numbers up or down just a little, and Rod of Ruin would jump from mediocre to broken.

I recall a day when this was, in fact, decent. Mostly because every other artifact was total jank, and this was your poor-man's Timmy. Now, it's getting all kinds of hate. I don't think it's quite fair for the card- it's all Mirrodin's fault, really. It taught us that a colourless mana is pretty much equivalent to a coloured one when Wizards wants it to be. Now, as artifacts have reached the standards of other card types, this has just fallen behind a little. It could be retired gracefully, yes, but there are cards that deserve hate much more than this. Cards that fill space in sets other than a core. Cards that are overpowered to the point that they're not fun. Cards that were modified or that simply exist for questionable reasons (I'm looking at you, new M10 cards). Cards that we were lied to about (Mythic Rares are NOT all legendary or epic flavoured, thanks, Mr. Warren Instigator). Rod of Ruin? Minor offendor, at best.

Please don't shoot me down for this next comment....I'm new to the game and don't fully understand the mechanics yet. But If someone does play this card, and you're on a recurring burn on end game, how do you actually get rid of this card? What can you play to remove it? Be gentle with me....like I said I'm new. only been playing 2 days.
Musume
★★★★☆ (4.5/5.0)(2 votes)
@ Bishop2010: I'm new myself but even I know that there are so many other things you can do with the 4 mana that it costs to field this card... Four Lightning Bolts or two Doom Blades, for example. For two less mana than the field and tap cost, you could put a Whispersilk Cloak on your heaviest hitter without having to pay 3 mana each turn you swing with it afterwards.
The new flavor text is awesome, but I snort whenever I read it on such a terrible artifact. "So shall be my triumph"?? Since when has ANYONE triumphed with this card?

Rod of Ruin can actually be very good in Limited in this block. Takes out lots of annoying chump blockers like Child of the Night. Also takes out evil clocks like Royal Assassin or Pyromancer that can be bad-news-bears even in late game. The cost is very high--but in foramts like Sealed and Draft that shouldn't matter too much. Play it turn 6 or 7 when you have nothing else to play and use it as a combat trick that can be reused over and over again. or use it as a clock.
Also helps against things with Protection from X, where X is your primary color.
Again, not the most amazing card ever. Not a first pick, but not a last pick.

Did anyone else notice that on the printings before Revised, you don't actually have to tap it? That would've actually made it decent, not great, but usable. Did they change it because they thought it was too powerful at the time, or was it because of some weird rule change regarding artifacts?
:D This artifact made my day, it is so funny!:D
It contains the words "ruin" "masterpiece" and "triumph", and what you get is the option of paying firstly 4 mana for just getting it working, and THEN paying 3 mana for ONE DMG! :D
This is simply hilarious! It is obviously a joke when you compare it to other providers of 1 dmg pr. tap like blightspeaker and onyx goblet.
Don't hate on it, laugh at it like the joke it is.

It's not that bad a card, I don't see what all the fuss is about. It's not a creature, so it's less vulnerable (i.e. Pyromancer and his ilk can't touch it), hence the activation cost. And at colourless, it should be expected to cost one more than the like of Pyromancer. @achilleselbow: It still needed to be tapped pre-Revised, they just didn't have a tap symbol. Artifacts that tapped to activate had "Mono Artifact" on their type line.

@achilleselbow Before revised, Artifacts (noncreature variety) came in three different types. Mono Artifacts, Poly Artifacts, and Continuous Artifacts. Mono artifacts could only be used once per turn (either set of turns until it comes back to you, or once during your turn only... it's been a while and I can't remember the exact details). Poly artifacts could be used as many times as desired, and of course continuous artifacts worked constantly. They removed the convention and simply added tap to the cost of using a Mono Artifacts ability, so in effect, before revised, the cards worked pretty much the same as after revised.
@Musume "Even a card like Acolyte of Xathrid would at least let you equip it with a Quietus Spike." Acolyte of Xathrid does not cause combat damage by tapping, nor does it actually cause damage at all, but rather causees the player to lose life. Even IF the Acolyte manages to get through, it's power is 0 and doesn't cause damage at all, so Quietus Spike wouldn't be useful on the Acolyte at all, unless you change its power.
Quietus Spike would be much more useful on a creature that can't be blocked.

It would have been usable if it was even 2 mana to deal one damage. But costing 3 and having to tap it is a complete waste of a card. So, by "ruin" it means the player's game is ruined by playing such a horribly overcosted card, right?
This has been underpowered for a long time, though I like the older flavor text which flat out says it is a relic from an older era... although that era was one of overcosted artifacts. The new flavor text is just trolling - everyone knows this card is bad, except Saldrath, the questionable artificer, apparently.

One time, a bunch of my friends came over to have a Sealed with a box of M10 we'd pooled for. There were cards flying everywhere, and the prize was first pick of rare (there was a Nocturnus, we were all kind of n00bs) and competition was hot. I had just finished my 3rd game, my deck was doing awfully, and things were tense, so I picked up one of these and placed it on my crotch. Everyone then looked, and we all were silent for a moment. Then everyone just burst out laughing. I didn't come in first or even 3rd that day, but it was the funniest MTG moment ever. #coolstorybro
