I guess this card was a test. It was not played excessively (read: at all), so WizOs decided it was healthy for the game to reprint the red original in M2010. Except in red it's a TOTALLY DIFFERENT STORY!

is it just me, or is this a red ball lightning?

Why is the background different than other green cards?

I use this card in a casual deck and people tend to react with a "Uuuuuugggggggghhhhhhh" when I play it.

@thelittleupsman: You're fairly right. It's actually a greenBall Lightning, but yes. This is a so called "planeshifted" version of it - different color, same stats. This is also the reason for the different design God_of_Slivers wondered about, which is used to make it more discernable.
I really like that one, and i think True_Mumin's theory is likely to be right.

Not really a great card in green... but in Red its monstrous...
Yay, green ball lightning, now I can play it with paleoloth easier and bring it back into play every turn with electropotence and ooze garden out.

This was actually a finisher in what I hear was an excellent mono-green aggro deck back when it was Type-II legal. Considering green's ability to accelerate and pump-up creatures, I think this would be more terrifying to face than Ball Lightning. Let's just say I would NOT want to see this coming at me on turn two, or at any time when a Primal Forcemage is in play.
@Xycolian: Nice.

I like this ability in green, but it's lacking in friends (sure Uktabi Drake is similare in funchion, but still to differant.) in the same color. It's a bit too color intense to be running with the red counterpart and friends. Maybe with an insane reflecting pool/vivade mana base, but WotC wont mess up like that anytime soon... I hope.

love the trample ability, watch out for shock, quicksand, or any other burn when u play it though, be ready to play your giant growth and swing in for 9. and most times turn 3 your opponent will be tapped out from playing those crucial early game spells. throw a grounshaker at his/her face to spite them.

Hey guys dont forget blistering firecat! That card I'd have to say was the first "testing" of a ball lightning wannabe. Although it costs one more and is a little different with morph and all, it is basically the same idea. Nevertheless, I agree that this card is definitely a true copy of ball lightning, but the first time they experimented with that cards specific mechanic? Not quite.

First turn Forest + Llanowar Elves. Second turn Forest + Baaam!!!
Alot of people say that ball lightning is better in red, but I think it's just as good in green. Not only does green have efficient mana ramping that lets this go on turn two, but it also has plenty of regrowth effects (including multi-use regrowth like genesis).
I would happily play this in any green aggro deck.
Can you save Groundbreaker and Ball Lightning with Vanish into Memory? Would they be returned at your next upkeep or would they be sacrificed from exile?

Much easier to cast berserk on this guy than on Ball Lightning.
Dude, I love timeshifted cards! And this one is one of my favourites.

1) Have 4 or more power worth of creatures 2) Play Groundbreaker 3) Activate Mosswort Bridge revealing another Groundbreaker 4) STOMP!

I love this thing. look closely at the art and you'll notice a guy being thrown off into the sky by it. to me the big advantage here is that I can play some of each in decks. However, to those who say that this is better than ball lighting because of green's mana acceleration? Desperate Ritual, Geosurge, Infernal Plunge, Pyretic Ritual, Rite of Flame and Seething Song beg to differ. Green has ramp, but red has rituals. This is one that I honestly think works better in red, but it's still hella fun in green, so it gets my vote of approval!

Next to green creature pump (Giant Growth, ect) this card seems significantly more terrifying than Ball Lightning. On top of that green has the ability to pump out multiples of these a bit too quickly thanks to all the ramp, as well as with Green Sun's Zenith .
Of course, Ball Lightning has the advantage of being fling-able while remaining in color. But why not just run both? For real, a play set of both will make an opponent cringe when every turn they're getting hit with a 6/1 trample haste, starting turn 2 with a Birds of Paradise.

Some of the expressions I get are priceless when I deal like 30+ damage on turn six and sac 10 creatures in a turn.
2) Play Groundbreaker

4) STOMP!

No particular reason. I just want to make the greenest deck I can.
