Yeah, this is pretty much the worst land ever printed.

It only gives mana to play legendary permanents (COLORLESS mana at that, it could have been two of any color and it still would have blown). This means that you will only use this land once or twice per game on average, so you're essentially wasting a land slot. It's terrible. Stay far, far away, because even the best Johnny in the world couldn't find a way to make this card good..

I have to agree. Why spend 2 life for 2 Colourless mana to play Legendary spells? Why not any other land which does not cost 2 life and give you coloured mana?

A Zoetic Cavern would be more useful, no matter what deck you're playing.

This card is not even worth being a bookmark.

This simply shouldn't come into play tapped. That way you would have at least a little incentive to play it.

Let's just call it "Untaidake, the Fail Keeper".

Here are five reasons why you should not play this card:
1. Enters battlefield tapped
2. You have to pay 2 life each time
3. It only produces colorless mana
4. Its mana can only be cast for legendary spells
5. The card itself is legendary

So you get a land with delayed use that can only be outside once which requires you to spend high amounts of life while on top of this only produces mana with very restricted use which also does not help to manage color issues at all.
Oh, and you can't use the mana for activated or triggered abilities either.

Yeah, that's indeed pretty much the worst land ever printed.

What where they thinking when designing and/or playtesting this card?!
It manages to make Chimney Imp appear rather playable.
Even in a legend-themed block like Kamigawa, this card is hardly worth playing with half the amount of restrictions.

What a pity John Avon's artwork was wasted on such an awful card...well, possibly it was intensively chosen as a little comfort to prevent people from crying when they see this card for the first time.

It would possibly have seen play if it entered the battlefield untapped and produced two mana of any colors without requiring to pay life each time.
This way the card would have been powerful, but still not broken either.

Ancient Tomb is waaay better than this, not only is it not legendary you can use it for whatever you want, it doesn't come into play tapped, and also it deals damage not pay life, meaning you can prevent it, if you want to.

One of the worst lands. It accelerates mana only by one turn, and you can do that with less painful methods.

If it didn't come into play tapped, this might be playable in Legend-heavy Kamigawa block. Add "Legendary spells cast with this mana can't be countered" and you have yourself a playable land.

Sigh, classic Kamigawa misdesign. Minor utility with mind-baffling over the top restrictions.

I always try to forget it, but this just makes me get disappointed all over again every time I see it. "Ooh, awesome art! Cool name! And it does... oh my god why."

There is quite an issue here, untaidake is a beatiful land, and has nice name and flavor and even could be useful in EDH. I think they shouldas they changed subtypes fin out there is an errata, like: we ment is does produce mana of any color and in does not come in into play tapped.

-Its rare.
-Its legend.
-Its land.

-Mana are colorness.
-Have to pay life.
-Can cast legend only.

Hopeless.

It's legendary, it enters the battlefield tapped, it costs you two life, and it can only help legendary spells.

Hi, crappy card, I'd like you to meet Sol Ring. Two mana, NO restrictions, costs one but accelerates your mana just as much, since it doesn't count as a land.

Also it's pronounced "Oon-tie-DAH-kay." That's the one way this card might prove lethal -- hearing its name mangled could cause you to laugh yourself to death.

The card isn't 100% TERRIBLE in EDH, its alot better than Numai Outcast, the only card rated worse than this. I considered playing it in kamigawa standard to ramp into fat legends super early, but never worked too hard at it. CITP tapped makes it too bad to use.

I actually gave this 1/5 instead of 0.5/5, for one reason: Commander. In Commander/EDH, many of its drawbacks are undone by the nature of the format.
1: The fact that it's legendary is about as much of a drawback as any other legendary permanent in a singleton format.
2: The fact that you have to pay 2 life is much less of a drawback in a format where your beginning life total is 40.
3: Even if its mana can only be used for Legendary spells, it can at the very least get your general out of the command zone and onto the battlefield a turn quicker.
Those three facts are worth half a point to me.

The great insult here, the TRULY great insult, is that this is a RARE.

With cards like One with Nothing you can argue it is a johnny card. Some Johnnies will love the card. It is also extremely elegant design.

But that isn't true of this card. It doesn't even do anything interesting. It has ok flavour, pretty nice art, but that doesn't excuse it. It's miserable and it's insulting to the poor kid who pulls it as their rare. At least as an uncommon, though it would come up more, you could kinda live with the loss. But some customers can't afford lots of boosters and a card like this is a slap in the face to them.

At my local card shop, this card has been sitting in the EDH display box for about two years now for a dollar. I don't believe human hands have touched it since it was first placed there. No one, not even new folks just starting out in EDH, are suckers enough to buy it. I suspect that's mostly because of the life loss clause.
I have a single copy of this card. I cannot sell it, I cannot trade it, I cannot give it away. I've tried leaving it in people's backpacks, and they just pluck it out and put it on the table. They don't even spare the effort to throw it away, as if somehow holding onto it for too long will reduce their ability to play Magic.

The fact that it's legendary is kind of irrelevant. Who would want 2 on the field anyway? In fact, it's almost a benefit: it gives you a way to easily get it off the field once you realize how truly awful it is.

I went back and forth in my mind from 0-3 stars, and nearly gave it more.

See, the thing is, the only cards to compare this one to are considered mistakes by Wizards.

It produces 2 mana, it costs 0 to play.

Mana Crypt produces 2 mana and costs 0 to play, with almost similar drawbacks. Restricted, Legendary, what's the difference? (If it's not, it should be.) Mana Crypt is busted.
Sol Ring produces 2 mana and costs 1 to play, and it's way more busted than Mana Crypt can ever be, having literally no drawbacks.

The Signets produce 2 mana and cost 2 to play! And Wizards considers them a little overpowered- and..they're right! The Signets make your deck hum like every card in it is hybrid. Actually not too much for Constructed- for once, mana bases were FUN to build! :D But too much for Limited. So they say.

Ancient Tomb produces 2 mana, costs life to use, and is 0 to play. It's the flip side of Mana Crypt, with Sol Ring on the equal and opposite side. Guaranteed drawback, or chance drawback, or guaranteed no drawback. Ancient Tomb we can argue about, but it's in the Vault. It's probably above what Wizards is comfortable with.

This land is indeed just plain worse than every card I named- but considering how great those cards all turned out to be, it makes sense that Wizards was too worried to let this come into play untapped.

Paying life for mana or limiting what that mana can be spent on are not new- in fact, cards like Ancient Ziggurat get made very frequently. The only thing it's even reasonable to not like here is entering tapped when the card is already Legendary. There were enough good Legends that a new Ancient Tomb would have been great.

2.5 Stars, for working with so many necessary constraints and because Amulet of Vigor exists, which turns this into a 3.25 star card. :)

Why do I have to give in 0.5/5, why can't I give it 0/5?
Especially funny considering half the legends in Kamigawa were flips, so they were only legends on their second side...
Would be 100 times better as a {1} cost artifact, then it wouldn't waste my land drop
TheWrathofShane
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
I would use it in a legendary deck. 2 Life is not bad, tapped is a hindrance. The real downside is it cant tap for 1 for other things. But if thats what most of your deck contains, its playable.

Legendary Decks are not something I would play expecting to win every game. Just a deck with singleton copies of a bunch of legendary creatures.

And this land is not bad at all for commander. If you commander ever gets sent back to the command zone, well this can pay his extra fee on its own.

This is not the worst card in the world. You don't want to include this in your land slot. Think of it as a free spell that takes a land drop, that you can use the next turn.

I'm probably going to get things thrown at me, but I actually run this in one of my Commander decks.

Which deck you ask? Captain Sisay. Tutorable Ancient Tomb that will work with 90% of my deck is indeed worth it. Probably the only possible deck it would slot into, though, and still not worth more than a 1/5.

I think the only situation in which this card doesn't EPIC FAIL and which invokes my intense inner Johnny , is in Captain Sisay EDH. Consider the following:

1. She can search for it ('cause it's a legend).
2. It minorly ramps everything else in the deck ('cause they're all legends).
3. It fits the theme of the deck ('cause yeah, LEGENDS!)

But srsly, this card sucks so hardcore.

Oddly, I still don't think this card is as bad as everyone puts it. Ancient Tomb was horribly broken. Unlike Sorrow's Path or Mudhole, this thing can power out a Kokusho a turn earlier, which is significent. Imagine a Standard where life totals didn't matter, and the only playable creatures were big and legendary - if such a situation were real, this card might have been good after all.

It looks like the card was designed to be an engine for deliberately losing life, as part of a combo that could benefit in such way, such as activating a triggered ability, or causing the opponent to lose more life then the caster.

I can't think of any cards like that off the top of my head. Too bad it doesn't work with the exquisite blood / sanguine bond combo.

I use this card in my shrines deck. Only one, it's all I want or need. It's the only application out of the 37 decks that I own that I would ever use it for, is singleton in one deck. It's not even that good in that deck, most of the time I want to use it I can't afford the life. The one time it helped me was getting me a 3rd turn honden of night's reach, which was pretty nice.

yes there is a use for it.
it's still worse than the other cards that could go in that slot, like a basic land.
No, I won't remove it. I'm proud to say that I put this awful card into a deck and it kind of works.

This land was a part of a triad of pain-abilities in Champions. The other two were Boseiju, Who Shelters All, and Hall of the Bandit Lord.

Now, compare those to this: Boseiju is instant's and sorcery's Cavern of Souls, making them uncounterable (minus the any colour business), and Hall is worth it in EDH, since you can have your general gain haste, which is particularly excellent for generals like Krenko, Mob Boss (AKA ones that tap).

And then, there's this.

Thankfully, I've purchased a total of 800 bulk rares, and none of them were this. I got Gargoyle Castle and Contested Cliffs though, which aren't great, but they're certainly better than this!

Basically a Land Sol Ring, just for Legendary? That's great by me! You people have zero imagination (at least you can see as far as Sisay's summons, I guess).
There's tons of lands and other cards with rather restricted usefulness, but still have great uses! You have to compare them with what they are meant for: in this case KAMIGAWA, which has plenty of Legends for it to work with. It's not meant to be the answer to your mana problems in Theros or whatever.

And what's wrong with me liking Colorless EDH? Just because I'll more easily roll a Myr Battleshpere over your head? Or Lux Cannon your Commander? Why NOT use Eldrazi Champions?

Really, people who can't use anything but Rares/Legends are the REASON Un-sets should be allowed, if only for a single card: Rare-B-Gone. Rather than complain about everything that's not overpowered and glorify those that are, try actually making interesting decks, using a better balance of commons and such. It's more fun than you seem to think (based on comments). That's

@ JarieSuicune: I love building around bad cards, but this isn't even an interesting bad card. There are just too many restrictions, because wizards rightfully worries about lands that tap for more than one mana. A land that taps for 2 for legendaries would be cool. Even with the two life, it would be cool. But coming out tapped really makes it too slow and conditional. Colorless EDH can use this because... they have limited options. Everyone else can stick with lands that tap for colorless the turn they come out and do better. This card isn't good, or fun or interesting.

That said, its better than Sorrow's Path, not sure why it is rated worse. This is the worst rated land on gatherer.
