3/3 for 4 is mild in Red, but he comes with a great ability. Gives everybody who enters the battlefield a smaller Reckless Charge, for free? That's pretty freaking great, right there.
So many five drops that will obliterate if they come down after him (drool)

Once Hellrider rotates, this thing will become the best red curve-topper in Standard. Until then, it might see fringe play in midrange decks that don't expect to win by turn 4. I love the power he brings. This effect was previously seen on In the Web of War, another card I am a big fan of. For best results, use with tokens. Both halves of Lingering Souls swings for 12 in the air on turn 5.

I'm not normally good at calling out cards I believe will make a major impact on Standard. However, I didn't call Hellrider when I shoulda, and I feel that this guy in the same league as him. So, here it is, I'm going to say that this card will make a pretty solid impact in Standard.

@Avensai I think Chandra, Pyromaster and Burning Earth are both better fours for RDW. Exava also compares favorably in builds with black.

"Very solid ogre. Words that look strange together." - Kryptonyt
Why, did you forget about Kazuul already? Heartless Hidetsugu isn't half bad either. Another rather recent addition to Club Ogre is Ruric Thar, the Unbowed, which is so freaking solid he walks unbowed. Good old Ghazbán Ogre, while not necessarily solid in terms of control, is also pretty decent. Admittedly, aside from Arabian Nights' Ghazbán, common and various uncommon ogres unfortunately tend to suck. But not as a whole per sé.
Serpents, on the other hand...

Just ordered a playset for $6 off amazon. Can't see it not be worth that much once the dust settles LOL. Nice candidate to replace step in for Hellrider, an Improvement over Hellraiser Goblin and a much higher powered replacement for Lightning Mauler. With Naya decks This would evolve an Experiment One and may actually make people give Wild Beastmaster another look. Rubblebelt Raiders would also be a nice followup.
Turn Four - Ogre Battle Driver
Turn Five - Two Burning Three Emissary's mana ramping used towards Rubblebelt Raiders.
Rubblebelt gets 3 permanent +1+1 counters to become a 6/6 with an added +2+0 for the turn partnered with 4/2 Burning Trees. Love topping out at four mana and still matching the mid range decks
He doesn't have haste. Playing a hill giant on turn four is not what you want to be doing in a red deck. Hellrider gets played because it closes out the game ON TURN FOUR. Hero of Oxid Ridge got played because it closes out the game ON TURN FOUR.
Unless standard red decks get another creature that lends to an alpha strike that can happen before a Supreme Verdict (on the play), it is way more likely that they will fashion themselves after the RtR block RDW and go weenie rush with creatures. Or maybe Theros will have some decent burn cards and Young Pyromancer will become the RDW Team Captain.
Either way, a Hill Giant with no immediate board impact is not Constructed playable, and especially not comparable to Hellrider.

Couples nicely with young pryromancer.
If i can draft one with a few young pyro's, may have something good going.

This is not a Hellrider type card. It serves a different purpose. This is a fun "play dudes and kill them RAHHHHH card".
You do dumb stuff like play Incresing Devotion or Lingering Souls (less dudes and more colours but it's a good card). Or maybe in a dumb Séance deck, who knows. Maybe Theros will give us something.
I'm surprised no one mentioned his potential in EDH. Generals with haste are great, with the bonus pump.

I get that, because he costs 4 and doesn't win the game as soon as he hits the field, he isn't a good choice for competitive constructed play. But I so want to run a red/green kitchen table deck and drop him followed by Kalonian Hydra. Swing for 10 trample damage turn four (assuming a mana dork on turn 1 or 2).

Much like Mindsparker, this is a good card that would have been AMAZING if it were just given Haste. As it is, it's a decent Red aggro replacement for when Hellrider rotates out, making your one drops much more useful late game. Hopefully another good one comes around in Theros, however; otherwise Red-aligned Aggro decks will struggle a bit.

Possible combination with spell-decks running Young Pyromancer? I think that 3/1 elemental tokens with haste are pretty solid, particularly since shock is back in standard again. low mana curve spells, combined with those two creatures, makes for some pretty funny stuff right there

I both like the cost on this - powerful but not too crazy - and the fact that it fits either weenie strategies (the token thing) or finisher strategies.

I feel like there's some kind of modern deck for him with a weird turn 4 win revolving around playing him, and playing Memnites and Ornithopters with a Tempered Steel played the turn earlier.

The obvious first thought is that this guy boosts your mid-game threats, but I really like how he turns late-game 1drops from dead draws to viable, even potent, attack options. Rakdos Cackler, I'm lookin' at you!

I've always loved cards that are not necessarily gamebreakers on their own, but have the potential to be extremely powerful with the right pieces around them. This is one of those cards. It screams "TOKENS!!!! MASS TOKENS!!!!", but anything that gets a boost from its power (ex. Prime Speaker Zegana) or from attacking (Kalonian Hydra) or both (WILD BEASTMASTER BABY!) can produce some shocking results for your opponent.
I also love Master Biomancer for many of the same reasons- they are almost the same card but fit the flavor of their colors- and one of my happiest moments as a Magic player came in an Elf RUG brew with both of them. Against an Esper tokens deck, my opponent tapped out for Obzedat, Ghost Council on his turn 5 to go to 22 life, as my first 4 turns had netted only a couple one-drop Elves, an Elvish Archdruid, and Master Biomancer. I nearly wet myself as this happened since I had a Battledriver and Fungal Sprouting in my hand, and the resulting attack of six 6/4 Saprolings left him completely flabbergasted.
And of course, that deck abused Kessig Cagebreakers.
Flavor text seems a bit off. I know red is the color associated with passion and ogres are a largely red tribe but... somehow I just don't feel like I would pick 'passion' as one of two primary motivating feelings when speaking about ogres. 'Hunger' 'malice' 'hatred' 'cruelty' lots of things more I'm sure however... call me close minded but 'passion' just doesn't say ogre to me.
You might say that a strong hatred or whatever is a kind of passion, but the word passion on its own has a different meaning without more context.
On other flavorful news the fact that he doesn't haste himself does make sense - he's probably not going to step out of a disorienting summoning experience and start whipping the bejeezus out of himself to drive/herd himself into the fray.

@Taudisban I think you're seriously undervaluing this card. Don't just assume every red deck is mono red. This works better than Hellrider in some decks. I'd rather have my green fatties enter with +2/+0 and haste than let Hellrider do a measly little pinging.
