The least it could do was give the creature flying.

were they really afraid that Accorder's Shield would rip the format wide open with it's incredible gift of vigilance and +0/+3!?! we may never know now that this card, obviously intended as a tournament staple, was printed at uncommon. This thing protects the mighty STORM CROW from incinerate, lightning bolt, and shock.

Sure, it's far worse than Accorder's Shield, which in the first place wasn't the best equipment ever, but it's not as terrible as you guys say. It's quite bad, but not unplayable.
As for it being an uncommon, I have condescended a long time ago that being common or uncommon doesn't define the card's playability. Stuff like this may get to be uncommon, but at least all that means is that I'll open it less frequently in boosters.

I think R&D does this stuff as a goof just to get a laugh at everyone getting really upset about it. It is a really stupid card to release in this set though.

Uncommon rarity is such a strange melting pot of stuff. You get the superpowered french vanilla stuff that can't be common because they don't want it to dominate Limited, like Vampire Nighthawk, and you also get the stuff so bad it can't be common because players would actually get angry if they keep opening packs full of them, like this and those Angel's Feather charm cycles.
There's gotta be a goofy deck in there somewhere...

Absolutely terrible card should've never been made and will see no use in popular formats whatsoever. Strictly worse than Accorder's Shield and is an uncommon. FAIL. I'd rate 0/5

I do like the little message they did with this/Greatsword and the new holy/unholy enchanments that power increases are generally better than toughness increases.

wow... it's so incredibly *** i know i'm sure to open a playset+ from only a fat pack... Accorder's shield is the lowest end of the almost ok. this is the same but worse. and an uncommon. opening this i'll probable be more angry then tower of calamities (i've opened three of those suckers, from less then a display...) hope they'll put it in an intro-pack as well... or event deck even:D
All these dang zero-cost equipment are screwing up my chances of getting a Paradise Mantle with my Stonehewer Giant Avatar in MoJhoSto! Stupid shields! Nobody likes you!
Ahem. Anyway. This actually seems reasonably playable in this Limited format, where an extra 3 toughness is very relevant. So despite being so weak and seemingly unplayable, this is actually a Spike card. Isn't that ironic?

@a_mano - At least you're able to make some use of these...my first New Phyrexia fat pack gifted me with 3 Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augurs...
Really though, Accorder's Shield will still be legal when M13 comes along next year, so what's the point? I bought a booster box and have four of these, and only two Swiftfoot Boots. So this waste of cardboard is taking up the uncommon slot from something that's actually, you know, relevant.

Trash. Another example of making intentionally bad cards to "teach" players a lesson. Personally, I don't get it - they could have reprinted Accorder's Shield, which STILL doesn't see play, and taught the same lesson without the laughable direct-line inferiority of this new card. And to think that design time was spent on this and art was commissioned for it as well... why?

1 star just because it's a 0 cost artifact that could actually have some use. Surely it's not worse than Crystal Rod?

This really isn't that bad, I think it deserves about 2 stars, but printed immediately after Accorder's Shield? That's an odd move by WotC.

If you have two Puresteel Paladins out then this and Accorder's Shield are actually hilariously powerful as you get two cards out of all of them (or more with more Paladins). Super amusing when your Paladin suddenly has the ability to survive direct combat with Emrakul, the Aeons Torn simply because you have a ton of shields taped to him. Fun stuff.
In any other situation this card does suck pretty darn hard though.

Unlike Greatsword, this is even less playable in M12 limited.
Greatsword can help you win the game, like if you have a Griffin Sentinel out and make it a 4/3. Kite Shield just helps stop your inevitable doom.
In fact, the flavour-text capsulates my point entirely: "To my sword I owe my glory, but to my shield I owe my life."

About as bad as you can get for vanilla equipment. Still could be a filler for a deck until you shell out 1 dollar for something actually useful. Please improve the bad on purpose cards wizards.

This is still bad even when compared to other cards that weren't good to begin with: - Accorder's Shield at least provides vigilance, but despite being strictly better is still overcosted. - Greatsword is terrible compared to Vulshok Battlegear, but at least has its use in limited.
First off, distributing the power of a card (in this case the Battlegear) among two cards and keeping the cost of one half (Greatsword) the exact same is not how it's done. Wizards knows offense is the best defense, so at least they cut the mana for casting the defensive half (Kite Shield). But come on, it's still far too expensive to equip.
Now if it would have been the other way around (casting cost , equip cost ), it would at least have been interesting, since you could use it to freely move it among your creatures during your main phase.
But come on, as it is the equip cost could have been , and nobody would have complained.
Well, at least it has some redeeming qualities for having great art. Which, then again, makes it even worse.
