Almost seems like this card (or at least its flavor text) should have been on a Scheme card somewhere.

Dear Johnny,
I have an interesting card to show you. It looks like it can be pretty easily broken in half with stuff like Cloudstone Curio. Please go ruin modern for me.

I've been eyeing this card for a while now and have a noob question about it's application.

I use Thraximundar as my commander. Could I get him from the command zone to the battlefield for 0 with this in play? :0

Bring on the lightning
We'll make a monster for fun
Bring on the lightning
We'll turn him loose when we're done
It's very frightening
See how the villagers run
Pull that switch and catch the lightning
Before the storm is done

Does this card work with Back from the Brink like I want it to? As far as all zombies I cast cost zero to cast and Back from the brink says exile target creature card in your graveyard and pay its mana cost to put a token copy of it onto the battlefield. Is that the same as casting?
Magnor_Criol
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
The flavor is awesome, sure, and this has lots of combo potential - but it costs six mana. That's insanely high for any deck seeking to combo off with it in a competitive format like Modern. And most Zombies are less than 6 mana to cast; doing a gatherer search for it, there's only 7 Zombies that cost more!

Yes, it could be used to dump a ton of Zombies on the field at once, but in order to do that you have to have a hand full of them when you land this guy. By turn 6, if you have a full hand of Zombies, you're probably doing it wrong. Or have a ton of card draw in the deck, which doesn't work great with it since this thing wants a deck full of Zombies and basically nothing else......

Hm, maybe a casual deck centered around this, a bit of early mana accel, and Blue Sun's Zenith to refill the hand and get Zombies into it once it lands? Or Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur. Or Damia, Sage of Stone.

@magnor criol, you can use this card to combo with Creeping Renaissance. And with all they ways to mill yourself in this set, that would get out a ton of zombies in one turn.
NoobOfLore

My biggest concern is that by the time this hits the field, you're about as well off hard-casting all your zombies.
On the other hand, if you're doing a lot of unearthing, as you ought to be in a zombie deck, then this lets you do so as much as you please.

Poor Oglor, awlays getting bossed around. Hope he manages to get it back on his master next set.
Oh, yeah... And this card is freaking insane if you manage to get it out, given the amount of Disentomb effects in Innistrad (Ghoulcaller's Chant, Ghoulraiser).
Other than the pure zombie deck, this card kind of inspires me to make a Zombie Knight deck with Haakon, stromgald scourge. Getting this and Haakon together means you've just begun a zombie apocalypse.

@Atemu - Given the skeleton isn't a zombie, no.

@WheresMyLand - Nice combo, but you still have to pay to use the Disciple's sac ability and paying 1 to mill one card is not terribly efficient. However, using Carrion Feeder in place of the disciple . . .

@languill - Splashing a GreenGreen card into what likely is already a BlueBlack deck adds a lot of complexity and/or mana fixing. Not saying it can't be pulled off, but definitely not regularly or reliably.

I've got to agree with Magnor Criol. The 6 CMC really slows this down almost to the point where it's negligibly useful. I can see it being a nice game finisher, allowing you to drop a massive fatty late game, but I don't see it being a reliable saving grace if you're already in trouble. You either need massive card draw or unearthing, both of which add complexity to the deck and take space from the loads of zombies you'd otherwise want to throw in.

I just had a brilliant idea. if you play modern, wich i would if the place i play mtg at did modern tournaments, use this with Soulquake. This will be perfect if you playing blue black zombie tribal because tipicaly you trying to get cards in your grave yard then you return every thing to your hand and dump them back dow . i guess you could use just about any other card to return all cards to hand, but so far Soulquake is the only one i know that dose grave yards too.

3/5 if your using alone, 5/5 if you use it with combos.

btw the flavor on this card is awesome this is preaty much every thing innistrad zombies are about, Mad Scientists creating f****d up zombies under the stormy night, kind of reminds me of frankestien. wink, wink.

"alrighty, I'm gonna go ahead and drop every zombie i've played or had killed this game for 0. You're up."

see if you ever get invited to play with those kids again.

@Mike-C: Frankenstein's Monster won't work with Rooftop Storm. If you cast Frankenstein's Monster using Rooftop Storm, X will be zero.
Mike-C
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
THAT'S INTERESTING! "Rooftop Storms" were a very common occurrence in horror stories/films about mad scientists. The primary source for this is the 1931 film adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein in which Dr. Frankenstein uses the power of lightning, harvested through a lightning rod mounted on the roof of his laboratory, to animate his monster. Frankenstein's Monster is a Zombie from The Dark expansion and might actually make for a fun combo with this card!

Edit: @Adrian.Malacoda re-Frankensteins Monster combo not working: Ahh.. right you are! Forgot that X actually had to be PAID in mana (as in, not just graveyard removal) on top of the (S)(S) :(

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
@averyk Actually, no. That only changes it once it's on the field. It doesn't affect the cards in your hand, where they are referred to specifically as cards. If it refers to cards, it refers to cards not in play. If it applies to creatures, enchantments, or any other kind of spell, they refer to in play abilities.

NARFNra
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Well, that makes Gravecrawler an infinite sac/storm count engine. Damn.

@Lumppu
Almost. The first time you cast them with Rooftop Storm, they'll cost {0}. However, as Commander 'tax' is a cost modifier, it's applied AFTER the base cost. In other words, you'll just pay {0}+(X*{2}), where X is the number of times you've cast it before. So think of it as though your commander cast 0 and you'll be fine.

Doesn't this work?
Get Rooftop Storm out, play Phyrexian Ghoul.
Either have two Gravediggers in hand, or have one in hand and the other in the graveyard. Play Gravedigger for 0, get your other Gravedigger back, sacrifice to the ghoul.
Then do it as many times as you want.

I hope it does, because I put it in my friend's "sideboard" for the B/U zombies deck I made him. More like...extra cards to have fun with, not so much a functional sideboard. I couldn't afford buying any more cards, so no Gravecrawlers.
