His connection with Trinket mage obvious, one wonders whether a third brother lurks in the depths of this block. That tutors for cmc 4 or 5. And rides the short bus to school. But makes everyone smile when he gets there

This surely heralds the Action set's Trash Mage, the card which can only tutor an artifact that Luis Scott-Vargas has given a Limited rating of 1.5 or less.

He's not great, but there are worse ways to grab bombs out of your library. Definitely useful in sealed or draft where you likely only have a couple of bombs and want to grab them to either turn around a losing scenario or secure your win.
although already mentioned in one article, obvious play with Etherium Sculptor and Grand Architect, which turns all your sculptors and other blue creatures into Vedalken Engineer for some insane mana! two sculpters and an architect and they will pay for for any artifact up to 8 colorless mana,
from their you can fetch anything you need to win really, Wurmcoil engineis a good choice, or blightsteel collosus
even better with shimmering myr out as you can block with your blue creatures, then tap them for mana (even with summoning sickness) and play your big artifact you just drew ready to attack your next turn
Also good for just card advantage/thinning cards from your deck, which blue always seems to like
all in all a good card

As a fan of cards with art that captures what the person playing it does IRL (see: Donate), I approve of this card.
So good in EDH, er, "Commander". Why stop at Wurmcoil Engine when you can tutor up any number of Esper fatties? Inkwell Leviathan and most any of the Shards Sphinxes are excellent targets. Obvious combo with Master Transmuter for beatdowns! Though it's a shame he can't get you a Sphinx Summoner. The Transmuter loves that guy.

It fetches Steel Hellkite, Darksteel Colossus, Blightsteel Colossus, and Myr Battlesphere for 3 CMC. The only way it could be better was if it dropped whatever you fetched onto the battlefield, in which case you would quickly find yourself being the most unnecessary part of your deck. Also, the card would be named Tinker.
Besides, from the perspective of a budget player, I am never going to own any of the Moxen that Trinket Mage is designed to fetch. Artifact lands, maybe, but never a mox or a lotus. This guy is just much more relevant to my collection than his little brother.
Art does suck out loud, though....

I LOVE THIS CARD SO MUCH. The versatility that this card brings to the table is immense, especially when combined with grand architecht for immediate mana payoff. Go fetch your Contagion Engine to power up your chalices and lux cannons if its early, kill opponents creature presence. Need a late game Scale Tipper? Go get your buddy Steel Hellkite and go to town. Say you want to power out an infinite mindslaver on a prototype portal, go get that. Or if youre REEEALLY in a pickle, take a risk and find your good pal platinum angel. Not to mention Blightsteel or Wurmcoil. Just.. Massively incredible.

I really dislike this art. The mostly red background really clashes with the blue border and everything in it looks way too cartoony. It's just ugly.

Not only is this card advantage, a small beater (hey, it's board presence!) but it fetches your win con (or at least one of them.) Also cool with Spire Golem as you'll get a 2/4 Flyer and a 2/2 for about 5 mana. I'd mostly use them so I always have things I can fetch or so I can save my board in a desperate situation.
