Absurd nowadays. That one guy on the left looks like he really needs to go to the bathroom.

I considered getting this, but the combo I'd use it in is far too unfair: Metalworker + Voltaic Construct = infinite mana (if you have more than one artifact in your hand) It is possible to get the same effect with Filigree Sages if you can produce at least at the same rate.

It's not as unfair as you'd think. Not only do you need this card, but you also have to have had it on the board for a whole turn to get over the summoning sickness. Then, you need to get a Voltaic Construct down too. Additionally, you still need at least 2 artifacts in your hand AND some way of using the mana. So you're talking a pretty card-intensive combo there!
To be fair, I use this combo in a Memnarch Control deck, and it's awesome when it goes off (still need blue mana though) and you take your opponents side of the board for yourself. It can work, but I assure you, keeping one of these alive long enough to fire it off is not so simple.

After playing with this card in an UrzaTron deck with huge artifacts, this card is absolutely a joke. Once it hits the table and is used, the amount of mana he generates is SO out-of-balance with the game of Magic, I'm shocked any Magic designer couldn't see this during the design phase, much less the playtesting phase.
If this card simply generated ONE mana per card revealed, he STILL would be broken, but it would be workable, and at least comparable to the other absurd mana-generating creatures and land (Tolarian Academy, Rofollos, and Gaea's Cradle excepted).

Mirrodin broke this; does this mean that they are going to have some kind of Ridiculous Shit Block that will break Wood Elemental and Break Open?

Dear Wizards, I have a really great activity for you guys! It ups tournament attendance, AND makes a really good block! Know what that activity is? Playtesting, plain and simple. Sincerely, Players who are tired of 1st turn win combos that revolve around stuff from the Urza block

Tolarian Academy & This Guy, Create So Much F U C K I N G Mana
@ClockworkSwordfish This was broken, and KNOWN to be broken Looooooong before Mirrodin ever came along. (To be fair, though, the Metal Worker has many "Friends" in Mirrodin block.)

Metalworker + Staff of Domination in a artifact-heavy deck = Infinite Draw + Infinite Mana + Infinite Taping of their creatures + Infinite Life. Considering both are viable on their own, and each has a mana cost of only {3}, thats pretty damn good for a legacy legal 2 card combo.

Broken to the point of hilarity. The fulcrum of my semi-budget vintage artifact deck I call "Big Blue."

The Metalworker itself looks like something from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
I reveal 7 Myr Superions! And then I will put them all into play!

{T} him, then reveal the cards you were going to cast anyways! Seriously though, ridiculous mana acceleration at it's best...

What flawless logic. "Its not broken because you can just use a removal card before next turn." I bet you thought the urza's block was balanced and good for the game.

Real reason its not legacy banned is because tolarian academy is a bit better, and the two are antithetical to each other

Reasons for playing it: can be played in any color deck, produces an absurd amount of mana early on, and is very cute artwork. Reasons its not banned in legacy: its a creature(swords), doesn't tap for blue mana, and is very cute artwork.

I remember first seeing this. I misread it as "discard any number of artifacts in your hand...." It still seemed pretty good, even then.

I play four of these in my vintage colorless bullet catcher/eldrazi deck when facing off against two or three players. Tap Metalworker in phase two and reveal bullet catchers like Shield Sphere, Phyrexian Walker, and Ornithopter to help you cast $ colorless creature spells like Emrakul, the Aeons Torn earlier in the game. It doesn’t hurt to also control mana acceleration permanents like Cloudpost, Glimmerpost, Eye of Ugin, Eldrazi Temple, Vesuva, Tolarian Academy, Sol Ring, or Urza’s Incubator. Not to mention equiping Swiftfoot Boots, or casting Not of This World, to better protect Emrakul (who only has protection from COLORED spells). Then in phase four cast aforementioned bullet catchers for zero mana, as needed, to prevent damage during an opponent’s turn. Then experience your friends labeling you as a real jak@$$ for using Metalworker-a broken card.

You're thinking too small! Without haste effects, you can drop that colossus by turn two easily with Metalworker.
Also because I only have two of these.
Also without haste effects...
Turn 1: Land, Mana Vault, Voltaic Key, Metalworker
Turn 2: ???????????
Turn 3: Swing with Blightsteel Colossus
edit:
Turn 2: Blightsteel Colossus, Lightning Greaves
wheeeeeee
Mishra's Workshop
Metalworker
Turn 2
Revel whole hand for 14 colorless mana
Profit.
In commander. And it has been for a while.
Turn 1:
Mishra's Workshop
Metalworker
Turn 2: (drew Arcbound Stinger)
{T} Metalworkr = 12 mana
Play: Seat of the Synod, Arcbound Overseer, Arcbound Stinger, Arcbound Stinger, {T} Mishra's Workshop and Seat of the Synod: Steel Overseer, and Arcbound Ravager
Oh yeah, and Arcum Dagsson
It doesn't beat Darkblast so 3/5
