I can't decide if this is good or not, especially with the uncommon 2/1 soldier in the same format. If it was a 3/3 (which I feel it should be) it would be better, but I don't want to sac a land and kill my pace for something that's just going to get killed by its blocker. Shroud helps I guess, but I can't think of any situation that i'd rather play this instead of birds of paradise or llanowar elves.

Yeah, he seems amazing at first glance, but then you realize how easily he gets killed with a simple block (Elite Vanguard and many, many others). The tempo loss seems hardly worth it, unfortunately. Should have been made a 3/3.

Haha, it sucks.

Not nearly as threatening as it looks. At 3/3 it would be overpowered but at 3/2 its going to die to nearly every top tier 1 drop in Zendikar... and of course volcanic fallout.

Awesome card works great in a knight of the reliquary landfall deck i have made, doesn't slow the game down all that much with all the mana fixing available please it is an easy way to get lands into your graveyard.

Those of you who say it sucks are wrong. Just put mana producers out on later turns. But I don't suggest playing it on the first turn, it screws up mana. Play it on your second turn and then play Birds of Paradise to equalize the mana loss.

I ran this guy in my deck at the pre-release. Turn 1 Scythe Tigers aren't hardly as bad as it sounds, especially if you're starting first. Just take it like you're starting second with a 3/2 shrouded creature on your side. Not too bad in my opinion. Just make sure you have another land in your hand first though. This guy literally won a few games for me during the prerelease. If it had been made a 3/3, it would have been just a tad over-powered, especially with all the pro-green cards out there in Zendikar. 4/5

I don't think most of you realize how amazing this card is. A 3/2 turn-1 drop with shroud? really, its drawback isnt as bad as it seems.turn 2: just play a Terramorphic Expanse or one of the lands with abilities like it(Verdant Catacombs, Arid Mesa, Scalding Tarn, etc). Really people, think a little more; be creative.

Considering how many 2-power guys there are in Zen-standard, especially how many have first strike, this card seems all that much more awful. Was 3/3 really too much to ask for.

Also like what Qazior said; funny to compare to Mist Leopard. Apparently a creature that makes you sac a land is equivalent to costing 3 less.

When I play some people who are playing aggro-mirrors and I drop this they know with all the cheap burn in my deck I win.

it needs to be 2/3 like Mirri, Cat Warrior. At the moment it dies to almost every other first drop creature in standard. Oh Donovan you got point there! Flagstones of Trokair in green version would completely awesome for this cat!

This card could be a lot better than it sounds.. but its con is pretty big. Even with birds or some other mana accelerator, the problem is not the loss of mana as much as the missed land, since you may miss land drops or etc. It's possible you could use terramorphic expanse as suggested, but its still not very reliable.

A definite possibility, especially for knight of reliqaury decks, is flagstones of trokair. You play oran reif turn 1, this on turn 2, with flagstones as your second land. Thereby netting a 4/3 shroud tiger with the help of mana accel. The problem with it though is that with a bird you can t2 a thoctar or leatherback baloth.. that while missing the shroud is also a 5/4 and a 4/5. So a 3/2 that needs help to get larger is not usually worth it. Especially compared to naya hushblade/humble budoka, virtually the same card for 2 mana.

Not actually a terribly good card. If it were a 2/3 it would actually be better, IMO.

This is much better that Rogue Elephant, since your opponent cant simply unsummon it and laught in your face. Good thing it dont have to be a forest, too.

This creature kind of sucks in constructed, but it's playable in limited.

It's a new version of a Rogue Elephant... I wonder noone noticed. The new one includes shroud and you can sacrifice any type of land, but only has toughness 2.

The last fact is essential.... especially if your opponent controls small creatures. It makes a huge difference if a Knight of the White Orchid or a Pyroclasm can kill it. Another unmentioned fact is very important: There aren't any cheap cards with land-"reanimation".... no cheap/easy way to return a land in your graveyard to play. There is no real green option that a sacrifice effect doesn't create such a big drawback. (One is Flagstones of Trokair). Therefore, it's only a tertiary creature in your arsenal.

It's made against control decks without Knights, where a cmc1 creature hits the board too early to counter him and shroud makes him very good against spot removal. Therefore, the best option to play this card, is in a white/green weenie deck, and you shouldn't play it on turn1. But rather play him on a subsequent turn, when the drawback isn't so important any more. And anything that gives the Tiger an additional +1/+1 (graft-counter / exalted) balances things out a lot.

>>> Those of you who say it sucks are wrong. Just put mana producers out on later turns. But I don't suggest playing it on the first turn, it screws up mana. Play it on your second turn and then play Birds of Paradise to equalize the mana loss. <<<
Or you could just skip playing this card, using a Bird of Paradise on your first turn to play a cmc3 creature on turn 2 and a cmc4 creature in turn 3.... and so on. I bet the second strategy is the more successful one.

Unfortunately there is currently nothing in Standard to easily balance out the drawback of this card, as opposed to Harvest Wurm being in the same set as Rogue Elephant.

@ cadenblade : "turn 2: just play a Terramorphic Expanse or one of the lands with abilities like it."

That's pointless. Why would I want to use two cards to play one basic land when nothing on the field has a landfall ability? And why would I want that basic land to come into play tapped? So I can't play anything on turn two? Don't tell people to "think a little more" if you are going to suggest something so dumb.

@ cadenblade

as far as I know, you can only sacrifice something for one purpose. So you would be able to sac a terramorphic expanse to search for a basic land, or sac it to satisfy Scythe Tiger, not both.

Awesome art, awesome stats, can't be killed by spot removal and most burn... I really want to play this. The drawback may be hard, but I really want to play this anyway.

It's great for keeping pace and getting a creature out there to do some work. Definitely a lot worse things to play first turn -especially if you have little else to play.

Seems more like a black theme (sacrifice for great power), but with all of the green mana ramp, losing one land can be of little consequence. And, of course, shroud on a 3/2 for 1 green mana is a great package, and green is lucky to have this kitty at its disposal. Early on, losing that land can hurt, though. 4/5

I once was facing a deck that had 4 of these, but the guy who had the deck kept forgetting he couldn't Giant Growth this thing, so it was more of an impediment to him in the end.

I'm suprised this guy didn't get more love, after the calamity that Jackal Pup caused.

I'm tempted to make a deck from these, similar to one I saw using Neurok Commando, and Aether Adept. Basically this works super well in a deck with a ton of field control. Where your opponent can't do anything creature wise, and must just take 3 damage a turn.

Actually, the problem is the shroud: can't Giant Growth it on the second turn like Rogue Elephant. Against another green ramp deck it's a bit of an issue, but usually I have pleanty of ramp against other colors.
NoobOfLore

The shroud is what really drives this card home.

Against BR aggro, this card it incredibly annoying. Immune to Terminate, as few cards are, and drops before I have any comparable threats. It can trade with the somewhat undercosted Shambling Remains.

It's a good card. The land sacrifice makes it an unpleasant turn 1 play, but it's great nonetheless.

I really want to like this guy, but the only way I'd play him first turn is if I kept a 4 land hand. Maybe a deck with a 50% ratio of lands and a playset of Lost in the Woods?

Shroud is a blessing and a curse, and this card exemplifies Green's slice of it perfectly. Sure, this is a 3/2 one drop that will tear through a control deck and, overall, simply beats face with the best of them. But here's where the drawback kicks in: Green tends to take its weenies and ramp them up, and they can't do that with our kitty here short of global ramp (Overrun with a few of these out would be devastating). With green's inability to pump, this card simply doesn't scale like green's others do, and that's what makes it so well designed. Had it just been a 3/2 for Green, it arguably would have been more powerful due to how easy it would be to support it, but as is, the Shroud acts as a dampener to prevent any crazy combos from sprouting up using it.

I've got to hand it to 'em. Sometimes, those guys out in R&D make some stand out and truly brilliant cards, when they aren't printing *** vanilla commons or stupidly powerful mythics.

Could you use Simic Guildmage's second ability to move an Aura from something else onto your Scythe Tiger? I ask because that ability does not explicitly "target" the second creature. I just wanted to know if you could cheat a Rancor or Moldervine Cloak onto this.
