One from the best Naya creatures; 5-power attacker for only three mana with solid defense.

One of the best indeed but i hate it when i have only 2 of the 3 collors needed. Sometimes this card can be a big disadvantage. But yet if he is out on turn 3, you are very close to win.

Quite possible my favorite creature card when it comes to playability. Strap Shield of Oversoul making it 7/6 flying + indestructible :D love it

Awesome 3rd turn Naya fatty. On your fourth turn, enchant him with an Armadillo Cloak and you'e got a 7/6 Trample with Lifelink, if all the damage goes through you're looking at turn 4 life totals of 27 to 13 and that's always fun. Even better if you can give this guy haste since he's a big target for removal when he comes out.

Right.... I hope someone gets this automatic censorship thing working cos it's very annoying. It orevents use of words such as "analytical" and "assessment" or (heaven forbid!) "assassinate"! But someone actually managed to use the word "***" in his comment and it went through! How can it be THAT useless!?!?!?

This Beast Is Awesome Thoctars *** Rule And 5/4 For Three Is Fantastic Easily Top Three In Shards Of Alara. And The Artwork Is Sick This Beast Is So Playable Its Not Even Funny Surround Him With Firespouts And Pyroclasms And The Game Is Yours To Win
I also love the flavor of it, despite it being a vanilla creature. Amazing manliness: Imagine waking up surrounded by gifts everyday. You know that's awesome.

drop this with birds of paradise on turn two and watch your oponent squirm
5/4 for three mana is already decent, yet being triple-colored, making him 5/5 wouldn't have been game-breaking either, I'd have loved to se him like that - also for flavor reasons. Yet afterall, this one is certainly not bad either i guess... On top of that, the artwork is amazing.

Three mana for a card with over 4 P/T and doesn't have a downside(Ability)? Pretty good :)

Powerful yet simple. Its limitation is simply the colors your deck can produce, which makes it balanced as well.

And it looks cool. YOU GO, YOU GIANT HAIRY COWBEAR YOU!

The Woolly Thoctar is a real powerhouse, and I remember it causing a lot of trouble for my friends whenever I was able to cast this on my third turn. Still, the manacost makes the Thoctar pretty hard to actually cast unless you've either been really lucky with your mana, or if you've got some pretty expensive mana fix in your deck.
However, how great Woolly might be, the new Leatherback Baloth from Zendikar beats it hands down. It might only be playable in green, but it's so much more consistent than the Thoctar. Still, the Thoctar gets 4.5/5 for its amazing artwork and ridiculous impact on the game early on if your opponents doesn't have any immediate answers.

This card is good, but not great. I'd say you get exactly what you pay for here- nothing more, nothing less. Three colors on Turn 3 is hard to cast, I don't care what anyone says. I took these out of my Standard Naya Creatures Landfall deck for a while because they are so inferior to Knight of the Reliquary. That's how broken the Reliquary is, especially in my deck.

one cmc should give +1/+1 and NOTHING else. wotc needs to reduce the power of the recent cards.

Im shocked and somewhat offended that I dont see more thoctar in popular naya decks. Thoctar is such a preposterously proportioned threat that requires an answer. His fat stats work really well with the behemoth sledge, which is such a blow out.
meh. the only reason i dont like this is because it is still somewhat hard to get out on turn 3, which would be ideal. id much rather leatherback baloth, which is the same thing except all green and the power and toughness are switched

This card is so ridiculous. Turn two 5/4 with no drawbacks if you have some kind of acceleration like Birds of Paradise is just too fast and powerful.

The best baseline P/T combo (IMO). At least 5 power to trigger Naya effects, and at least 4 toughness so that it can't be 'bolted. It also isn't overpowered, due to its demanding multicolored mana cost. You get what you pay for here.

People who say it has no drawbacks don't understand that it actually has three drawbacks: Using Centaur Courser as a base (a 3/3 for ): 1) this has an extra mana cost (+1 toughness) 3) it also has an extra mana cost (+1 power) 4) all three colours need to be available at the time of casting (+1 power)
TL,DR: Three-colour decks are harder to use, so this guy needs to be 'bigger than average' for his CMC in order to be worthwhile.
Rant: Adding a third colour to a card's mana cost is not the same as adding a second. A card with three colours in its casting cost is much harder to play than a card with two colours (which is already more difficult to play than a mono-coloured card), especially if you want to play that card on turn 3. Remember that a card that cannot be played is essentially useless (unless it can be cycled or some such), no matter how good it may be. Basically, I think it is not helpful to think of this card as a 'turn 3 creature' -let alone a turn 2- unless you are running the tri-lands, Birds of Paradise, Druid of the Anima and whatever else. Including those cards means you don't have room to include more aggressive early creatures. Of course Woolly Thoctar still rocks, and if you manage to get him out on turn 2 then thats wicked, but people who claim powercreep/broken do not understand the difficulties inherent in playing cards with multicoloured casting costs. This guy pretty much requires the rest of the deck to be built around him, wheras a mono-green deck can just throw in a Leatherback Baloth for a turn 3 creature without really thinking too much about it.

I remember when 5/4's required five mana. Three makes half the vanilla creatures ever printed (with some leeway when it comes to scaling to different power/toughness) obsolete.
It wouldn't have seen play at four mana, but I have to question whether three was an intelligent decision in a block based around three-color wedges. It wasn't exactly difficult to get the right colors with the Alara and Zendikar blocks in standard...

@Asinine-Ultimatum: I'm sure that comment was quite insightful until most of those problems got fixed.
Anyways, hell, this guy's simple, let's keep it simple. He's good. Really good. If you're running these colors and don't have this guy in your deck, I oughta slap you. Only vanilla card I've seen that I'd actually consider making a deck around- but then, looks like TheWrathofShane beat me to it.

@superllama12 The reason that it's instead of is because (...)(...) is all adjacent. () skips over and between and . Remember, the colors of Magic are arranged in a pentagon, not a line. You get three consecutive colors this way, starting at instead of at .
When put the pips on cards, you'll find that usually they just go in a clockwise pattern, while moving the fewest number of spaces to get all the colors. This is why it's () instead of (), and instead of ()
I have no idea what's up with cards that are arranged like , since it would be the same number of colors "Traversed" whether you start on or .

It is a real beast (pun intended) combined with aluren and/or as mentioned before bloodbraid elf
This card is perfectly costed for tournament play. I used to play this in Zoo (Legacy) before I realized it left me completely vulnerable to Wasteland. Wild Nacatl losing a +1/+1 to Wasteland is survivable, but there were way too many matches where I sat for several turns with a Thoctar in hand, a dead card until I could get a Plains or whatever.
He's still a beastly beast. :)

This is one of my favourite cards. I like to play a birds of paradise on the first turn and on the second turn come out with the Woolly Thoctar. I also like to play a shield of oversoul on it and when I'm playing opponents with control magic in their deck I like to have disenchant or creeping mold in my hand to protect it.
