Fills a very specific role in Extended and Vintage dredge. Irreplaceable.

Really cool art and function. Recurrent removal = fun times.

@chaosjuggler: Yes, it can: Instant? Dredge? Something dawning on you? If you troll with Storm Crow comments, they should at least be correct.
I really like the design of this card, this is handy reusable creature removal. Dependant on format there are some meta creatures you'll be able to finish off with this spell. Randy Gallegos did a nice job there, too.

i have a very interesting question to put under your eyes.Dredge ability says: "...if you do, return this card to its owner's hand.Otherwise, draw a card." that means "if you don't pick up this card you can use dredge once again: in fact you could only active dredge if you are drowing a card. My question is: could i do it, dredging all my deck in just one step?

At Jerry: nope, cause it says if you do dredge for three, return it. You can only draw if you don't. So I guess you could technically think about it alot, but you can't dredge more than three.
Anything at instant speed with recurrence and strategy setup is excellent. Its a multi function card for 1 mana.

Just a note: U can good rid of 2 toughness with this. During ur upkeep, cast it, then dredge it back, then cast it again. So yeah, it kills storm crow.

The specific role in Vintage is to kill your enemy's Tamorgoyf when your Tamorgoyf crashes into it?
A pretty good card, even in a deck where it's the only dredge. Killing dorks like Birds of Paradise every turn is quite useful.

Can you dredge if a card is preventing you from drawing cards? can you dredge instead of drawing a card due to a spell or ability such as brainstorm,? and What about with an effect that makes you draw more than one card at a time such asfont of mythos would that mean you could dredge three times instead of drawing a card and could you mix and match (dredge, draw, draw etc.)?? thanks in advance (y)

@ DaaNz. Yes it can. Combine it with a graveyard of 20 cards and Visions of Beyond. Learn to troll.

Put this in my Zombie deck for the same reason as I did to Rain of Embers in my burn deck: it kills all those X/1 wretches my buddies are so fond of, all while filling another role (which in this case is filling my graveyard). Dredge is such an awesome mechanic, and Darkblast bears this mechanic nicely because it's so easy (and effective) to cast right after you draw it in early game.
Playing it also made me realize something about elf decks: many of them depend on turn 1-2 acceleration and play with as few as 10 lands. Screwing up their early creature drops dismembers them quite well.
Turn 1:
Elf Player: Llanowar Elves.
Me: Darkblast. IT SHALL GENERATE MANA IN HELL.
Turn 2:
Elf Player: Arbor Elf.
Me: Darkblast. IT SHALL JOIN ITS POINTY-EARED LITTLE FRIEND IN HELL.
That's pretty demoralizing for an elf deck, since it's just lost all its tempo (and may as well have run out of lands in hand).
In a format like Legacy, all the important creatures have one toughness Dark Confidant, Tarmogoyf (the first turn or two sometimes), Birds of Paradise, Priest of Titania, 99% of elves in existence, Snapcaster Mage, Lotus Cobra, etc... Also, you can play this after you untap but before you draw, then dredge and play again to take out something with 2+ toughness (Metalworker). You can do this several times per turn for other random draw effects

Darkblast - (B) Target Creature gets -1/-1 until end of turn. If target creature's controller is named Caleb Durward, that player loses the game.

It's nice to have this sitting in your graveyard for when you absolutely HAVE to give something -1/-1. Usually not great unless you have graveyard synergies to go with it, but there's plenty of those around.
One of those cards I had to stumble upon to realize how powerful it is. Save your real removal for real threats; use this over-and-over to force opponents to top-deck threats. When they can't you start drawing as normal. It's only card-parity; but what it does is topdeck weenie-removal whenever you need to. Combined with necroplasm from the same set you can control tokens, X/1s, and cheap CMC creatures all from the grave; while using your hand to establish a board presence.

* Snapcaster Mage. (Blue 2/1 bomb card.)
* Lotus Cobra. (Green 2/1 bomb card.)
* Goblin Welder. (Red 1/1 bomb card.)

* Your own 1/1 colorless Spirit creature token from Forbidden Orchard
