A good card for limited and casual, especially multiplayer. He's big and powerful, but not so big and powerful - or mana efficient - that makes you an instant target. Other than in EDH with Curiosity or Ophidian Eye, natch.

This card really embodies the Izzet spirit, which is the spirit of zany deckbuilders who aren't afraid of taking risks with unlikely cards. Ravnica block was one of my favorites of all time because each of its guilds played differently, and had a different feel - and this creature was definitely one of the all-stars of Guildpact.

At risk of going to that special hell for explaining a joke (Or talking in the theater), I must point out that the flavor text doesn't just say Niv-Mizzet, it says Niv-Mizzet is #1, basically. The '90*' things are telling you what is to be read sideways, anything except those expressions you read normally.
Also, Niv-Mizzet is #1!

I'm actually curious how this would work with the hypothetical mandatory version of Curiosity. Eventually you would run out of cards, break the combo and lose, but chances are before that your opponent would run out of life. Is it a draw because you both die, or do you win because they die first? It's important to note, however, that if it is a draw, it's not because of an infinite loop. It's because you both die.
But that doesn't matter, since Curiosity is NOT mandatory.

Even if Curiosity did not have the 'may' keyword, it would still not be an infinite combo. Niv can do 1 damage to himself at any time, ending the chain of card-draws.

Tidings can lead to you winning the game. With Niv, in leading you to winning the game, it leads you to winning the game. Or, more simply, in winning the game you win the game.
He doesn't fall under the category of 'win moar' because card draw is essential (it is part of everyone's turn) and damage is fundamental. Fascinating.
This guy has to be best friends with Arcanis the Omnipotent. Because they work like a killing machine together. If you can manage a Thought Reflection, your opponent is all kinds of dead. I love this card, easily my favorite dragon ever.

Once ascension gets turned on (or earlier with luck), a typical game goes something like this.
1. Tap Niv-Mizzet, draw a suitable amount of the remainder of the deck, to inflict damage to an opponent. 2. Play a spell... any spell... and Mindmoil causes me to put my deck back down and draw it all over again, doing gobs of damage to any opponent(s) or creature(s) I choose. 3. If for some reason there is an opponent still living... Fine. End my turn, discard down to seven cards and cast Mnemonic Nexus during their upkeep 4. Repeat the above processes.
I threw this against a friends cleric deck that's designed for multi-player specifically to prevent damage (Battletide Alchemist and such) and to gain life. I did 200 some damage to him, not counting what was prevented, over the course of three turns.
While I suppose Spellbook and such could stop me from having to cast Nexus, I've come to prefer the Nexus because it lets me get back things I've cast. Essentially burn spells are no longer a finite resource.

Why not take the Curiosity combo a little further. It's obviously not infinite, although everyone seems to think it is, because you only have so many cards in your deck, which, by the way, you just drew all of. What are you going to do if you deal all that damage, and your opponent pulls some trick to save themselves (i.e. Safe Passage). Well, start with a Spellbook or Reliquary Tower, Psychic Possession so you don't have to draw, which would cause you to deck out (or even better, splash white for a Solitary Confinement, and maybe Library of Leng so you could discard to the top of your library and use Niv-Mizzet to keep on drawing). Presto! Now you have your whole deck in your hand, and its going to be difficult for your opponent to touch you. Alternative: Include one of the legendary eldrazi in your deck (such as Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre). Draw your deck, chose your favorite 7 cards, and discard Ulamog and all the rest to shuffle your suddenly massive graveyard into your library and repeat. Put in a Putrid Imp, and the combo actually is infinte, since you can discard them all whenever you want. It's easy to see why this is my all-time favorite card. If I could give this 10/5...I would give it 20.

Clarification concerning the Curiosity/Ophidian Eye combo. In both cards, there is the magic "may" clause. Moreover, you get to choose your target among all available creatures and players. It's a combo that doesn't backfire.
At every step of the way, priority is given to the appropriate players, and just before it's given, it's checked if there are players with life total<=0 or players who have attempted to draw a card from an empty library. These players lose the game. By the way, you just lost The Game.
If you're still here (probably done raging), I actually prefer Ophidian Eye by a lot, as it lets me combo literally out of nowhere. Great card.

Having run an Izzet deck for five years, my opinion is obviously going to be a little biased in saving Niv-Mizzet is my favorite MtG card of all time.
But I don't care, either way this dragon is still amazing. Throwing in two of these and three Ophidian Eyes back when I was still rearing my deck up from the truly atrocious Izzet Gizmometry starter deck it started out as was the first legitimate combo I could pull off to go toe-to-toe with my older and younger brothers' far superior Orzhov and Gruul decks, respectively. My now formidible Izzet deck has seen a lot of changes since then, but Niv-Mizzet has been there for the long haul.
The funny thing about the originally flavored, curiously strong Niv-Mizzets combo is that it can also be used to keep your hand full; giving you almost permanent card advantage in most cases as you beat down your opponent. But, obviously, unless you're going up against a life-gain deck that has more life than you have cards in your library, dropping that combo will in almost every case win you the game. (But not every case... f*** you, Underworld Dreams!) It's so valuable in fact that I almost never cast him unless I have a Curiosityin hand; being able to play one card on turn six (or earlier if I have an Urza's Filter out) and being able to start the one-turn clock is massive; anything that can say "You're dead next turn if you can't find a way to deal with me" fronts an almost invaluable advantage.
And that's why I only ever get to play a Niv-Mizzet uncontested against anyone I've never fought before once; every time after that, I've Counterspell for the innevitable spot-removal about to come his way. Poor Nivvy's been o-ringed, sent to prison, sent into exile, mortified, unmade, lieged, char-broiled, terminated, enslaved, bladed and has met countless other hideous ends; I've even had people WoG the field just to get rid of him. But the feeling of surviving that onslaught to drop R/U's best combo; ain't one like it in all of Magic.
Oh, and did I mention I have a shiny one?

This card works well with Psychosis Crawler in multi-player scenarios. Also, pair either (or both) w/ Jace's Erasure. If you can get Niv, the Crawler, and a couple of Erasures on the the field you could potentially trigger multiple win conditions on multiple opponents at the same time!
The spell bombs are useful for both card draw in Niv's colors and Metalcraft for Molten Psyche. Assuming you have a full hand and the opponent even has 2 or 3 this combo could unleash a mean 15 damage for only 3cmc ones you get the proper pieces in place.

If you use the {U}{R} ability of Dracogenius to ping a player, you draw a card. Drawing a card makes the Firemind ping again, but it is the Firemind dealing the damage, not Dracogenius, so you do not draw another card. Still, you double the damage dealt.

Guys, the Niv-Mizzet+Curiousity combo will not work in Return to Ravnica because in Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius, his text reads "Whenever Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius deals damage to a player, you may draw a card" and "(U)(R): Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius deals 1 damage to target creature or player". This is a reversal from the original Niv-Mizzet, so the combo won't work. The new Niv-Mizzet is still a great card, but it isn't able to be broken with curiousity anymore.

Looks like the new Niv-mizzet combos with himself. Tap to draw a card, deal 2 damage (one from each) then draw one, and repeat. (since they have different names, the legend rule doesn't apply).
I was using this card in a battle. I tried to attack another card with this card. I thought because it was tapped I can draw a card. The other player said you can only tap it too draw a card, or to tap it to attack.

I've had some fun with Niv late-game with Consecrated Sphinx. Automatic 3 damage to your opponent every round, and your opponent can't pull any card drawing tricks either.
Unfortunately, hinging anything on getting two specific 6-CMC creatures out there at once is just not competition worthy without a deep plan around it. Fortunately, though, a good Izzet deck will have your opponent dealing with so much bombardment from other "Every time you cast an instant/sorcery" or "Every time you draw a card" effects that they might be too busy dealing with your other threats to get in your way.

Summoning sickness. You stated that you played both Niv-Mizzet and Curiosity on the same turn. You would not be able to tap him for his ability to draw because Niv-Mizzet does not have haste. So by the facts that you gave, you would infact lose.
Now, if you had another way to draw a card before the damage from the other creatures your opponent controls, or a way to give Niv-Mizzet haste, THEN you would win.
