This card might as well say:
Untap all permanents you control.
Creatures you control have haste.
You get an additional combat phase followed by an additional main phase.
You can play an additional land this turn.
Draw a card.

"I take another turn"...isn't is really so much strong? Yeah few times it means only "I draw a card and I put a land into play"...but however not bad thing!
Usually it means really GOOD things...^_^
Great card, one of the best.

An exceptionally strong card, arguably the second strongest in the game. This card, in addition to Ancestral Recall will ensure that every Vintage deck will play blue (if the owner can afford the power 9)

This was a common in the Gamma play test version of Magic. That's the one that says "Opponent Loses next turn" for those who care about History.

The first time I played the owner of the shop I played at, it wasn't restricted, so he popped out like 7 of these things in 3 turns and I lost to a Prodigal Sorcerer.

indeed, Zher0.
you nicely depicted what huge list of things such an additional turn actually provides (although there's a little error concerning the haste part, which is missing the "until end of turn"-clause)
that's the reason why i actually wonder how a card with an effect like this could have gained the tiny mana cost of 1Blue.

This and ancestral recall are the only power 9 cards that really jump out at me as being overpowered. (Before you start whining, yes, I KNOW that the moxes and black lotus are extremely overpowered, but on the surface they just seem like nice little boosts, rather than game-breaking cards.) This, however, just reeks of overpoweredness, giving you an extra card, an extra attack, an extra land drop and numerous other "Extras" over your opponent. I'm really wondering how it managed to make it through playtesting without being spotted as degenerate, lol.

I love this bomb... you play this baby and usually it's WIN!

I would so much love that WotC would reprint those in a separate tournament legal-set that would make the power 9 not legal in Standard, yet players who would want to play Vintage tournaments with these could do so without spending thousands of dollars on cards, and without spending more $$ to have the right to use proxies.

Still, this and the power 9 cards allow for so much versatility when you try something casual and not competitive that may render some obscure cards playable.. I've tried it and my friends and I had a lot of fun doing it :) Stupid stuff like building a deck around Transcendence and be viable...

The best card in the whole game. Ancestral recall you say? This card can be used in any game and at anytime and you will still gain a benefit from it. There are times when ancestral recall is not usefull (e.g. your first or second turn or when the other player has cast Black Vise on you).

Fun Fact: This card's early development version made it more broken than it is now.

"Target Player loses next turn"

Meaning your opponent loses the game next turn rather than just losing a turn. The wording was changed but it still ended up being one of the most powerful cards in MTG history :D

★★★★☆ (4.5/5.0) (21 votes)
I don't believe it was intended to be fair. Way back when, there weren't online spoilers, public information regarding print runs, and the game had a much smaller fan base. Players weren't expected to know as much about the game, and they certainly weren't expected to buy the cards in the quantity that they did. The designers wanted it to be an epic (and infrequent) experience for someone to crush his opponent with a card like Time Walk or Black Lotus. There would be rumors circulating about that 'insane card' that was rumored to exist, but perhaps none of your friends had actually seen--it was almost as if they were shooting for a Mythic Rare status from the beginning.

Black Lotus is the best card in the game because it essentially reads "0: you win the game". Nothing is ever going to beat that...not even time walk here, which is the second best card in the game.

Iconic art, too. There's something very dreamlike about it and it's totally nostalgic.

Once power creep catches up, people will be ignoring this card (which will be a common in newer sets) for Time Sprint, which will cost U for two turns at instant speed. Also one-drops will be 6/6. This is THE FUTURE. You should know that after using this card.

@scu.mbling: On a more serious note, I totally agree. That sounds like what they wanted back then. So yes, don't consider this a "balanced" card.

Rare actually meant "rare" back then, not "go out and spend a pile of money to get cool cards and use them to crush people who have less money than you." So, seeing this card, much less losing to it, was supposed to be rare experience. Obviously broken, and even more so as the game has sped up and advanced.

Why does anyone rate this less than five?
I mean, I know, undercosted, but I don't think that's any reason to rate it less than five.
However, I can understand rating things like Baneslayer Angel less than five.
The difference here is that if the metagame is a China shop, Time Walk is a rampaging Beast that WoTC accidentally let out of its cage in the China shop, and Baneslayer is a guy with a large club that WoTC paid to go destroy the China shop.

Is it just me or would this thing not work with Izzet Guildmage? You would have to cast it and then use the activated ability in the same turn, and it's take an extra turn after this. So if you cast multiple time warps in one turn, you're only getting one extra turn.

Time Walk + Isochron Sceptre + Black Lotus + one mana of any type is an autowin first turn.

The other person never has a chance to make a move. This could also work with any 4 mana including replacing black lotus with a swamp and dark ritual any type of mox card.

@scumbling1: IIRC the idea was that ante would balance out high-powered cards like this or Black Lotus; if you used them in your deck, eventually you'd ante them and lose them. The intention was that cards would end up moving around circles of players so everyone would get a chance to use them, and people would naturally balance cards themselves by avoiding using ones that were "too awesome to use."

Of course, nobody ever played for ante, so it didn't work.

Edit: "@thewrathofshane How can you cite balancing when this card is older than balancing? That's Ex post facto law, illegal, completely illegal."

Even in alpha, they were obviously trying to make a balanced game.. The only balancing with this is they figured players would have 1 or 2 at the most due to being rare.

Anyways, a fun story about this card is that during the original Magic playtesting, this card read "Target player loses next turn." It was changed because that would make the player lose the game next turn. Oh, the brokendness of Richard Garfield.

Although its low mana cost allows you to play it sooner, who would think of playing this on Turn 2? What would you get? Thus, Time Warp, with its higher mana cost, is actually STRICTLY better, for it is an instant unlike Time Walk's sorcery speed. In EDH and etc, such INSTANT speed extra turn spells really shine through.

Out of all the cards in the Power Nine, this is the one that I'm most surprised was made (even if it might not be as powerful as Ancestral Recall). I mean, if someone who is very inexperienced with Magic card design, they might let off the hook a card that draws you three cards for one mana (if they didn't understand how powerful card advantage is). However, I can't see why anyone would let a card that gives an extra turn for two mana exist. That doesn't even SOUND balanced, even to a new player.
