It may be too slow to see any play outside commander, but I'll be damned if its not awesome to see a mythic skeleton that looks so cool.
The ability is sweet too. Use cards like Fauna shaman, Buried Alive, Grisly Salvage, or dredge etc etc. to get cards in your graveyard, Sac a Sengir Autocrat and friends to bring 4 guys back. Next turn sac some of your other guys to bring back the autocrat and abuse those etb abilities as much as you want. It even protects itself... in a very bad slow sort of way but thats not the point.
All in all, hes slow, easy to disrupt and not particullarly strong on his own. And I love him to pieces.

Self Mill and Dredge in commander is extremely powerful strategy. this card in particular has pseudo-dredge and can trade your hedron crabs and millikins for Lord of the Extinctions and Sewer Nemesis which is game ending.

Why doesn't he have a mask of his own? There had better be a story here.
Also damn you EDH for making things that ought to be legendary not for fear of scary generals.

I'm with everyone else: He shoulda been legendary! I'da been proud to have him as a commander.
I'm okay with people thinking he's terrible, it'll make him cheap.
Three tribes that I really wanted to get a boost since they are severely lacking: Minotaurs (Getting fixed!), griffins, and skeletons. So...he makes me happy!

I don't care if it's slow and costly. I will play it (as will many others) for the simple words "Return X creatures to the battlefield". And if you've got a Blood Artist or another on-death-trigger card on the field it's even more delicious.
Every Golgari EDH deck will be wanting to run this.

@Tiggurix: I'm not that well versed in Greek Lore, but I believe it's because he was originally meant to be the ferryman who brings souls across the river to the underworld. (I'm fairly certain the art is set on a beach.) They certainly know about the guy anyway, because of the art of Rescue from the Underworld.
Overall, this is exactly what a Mythic should be. Powerful, flavourful, but not to the point that it reaches absurdly high prices. (Looking at you Brimaz and Lotus Cobra)

This card was probably put through the editing table a whole bunch of times, and I believe they got this card down perfectly.
A 6-cost 4/4 is not cost-effective, but it's not absurdly weak (like Gigantomancer). It could've been a 5/5 and it wouldn't have mattered, but any more than that (even a 6/5) would've been a slight bit too much, especially for limited.
The , sac , is easy to stop and will be quite damaging to you if it is stopped. However, if it works, you are generously rewarded. Abilities like this are terrible in Standard, but acceptable in EDH.
Lastly, the -cost Volrath's Stronghold ability is a tad bit expensive, but any less than would be absurd.
All in all, I am loving this card and loving the fact that Black is getting some reanimation that doesn't reanimate from all graves, but still can reanimate multiple creatures. Reanimator EDH has a large pool of Animate Dead's and Living Death's to play with, but only a handful of things like this or Chainer, Dementia Master's.

What a crappy mythic. Its abilites are darn expensive, and it's got a disappointing body for its cost. Really, if you want something that can do what this card does, just take a look at Hell's Caretaker. Overall, one of the worst mythics yet, though not nearly as bad as Archangel's Light.
EDIT: Ok, after having cracked this guy during the Prerelease, I'm slightly warming up to him. Still, I still think its activated ability should have cost , so that if you wanted to sacrifice and reanimate only one or two creatures it would have been cheaper to do so, and I still think this is one of the worse mythics they have so far.

I might give this a go in a Thraximundar EDH deck, just keep swapping creatures from my graveyard to play, putting counters on Thraximundar and getting some decent enter effects.
I notice a lot of people say he's a crappy mythic because all his abilities and stuff is sooooo expensive. I agree he's probably too much to see constructed play, but there are formats other than standard, and a ll the 60 card formats. Just think about the use he would get in commander, where high costed cards aren't rejected as often as in standard. This goes well with any sac deck, it just all comes down to how you use it. You probably shouldn't use this in constructed, but he's definitely not one of the worst mythics out there. Honestly though, if you think this is worse for constructed than a mythic like, say, Darksteel Forge, something is wrong with you.

I bought my first bng booster and got this guy. I was somewhat disapointed, but I am currently building a graveyard based deck, if I throw some tokens, I will be able to freely sacrifice some of them for actual creatures. Which is awesome. Also, the fact that you need to exile it, which only matters against white, is awesome. I'm somewhat glad I got him.
Bringing him into play does not kill Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder. Sacing all those thrulls to get your graveyard back after board wipe doesn't either. Into my edh you go!

Pretty sweet card. Built a BTT draft deck, GB, with 2 Nylea's Disciple, 2 Disciple of Phenax, 1 Gray Merchant, 2 Satyr Wayfinders, 1 Pharika's Mender and 2 Rescue from the Underworld and some other filler, worked great, was 2-0 until finals when I got flooded and lost to R/W heroic.
Once I got the Champion out with sufficient mana, the game was an inevitable win. Also had Bow of Nylea, which I could have used to prevent decking myself.
Pretty slow draft deck, but enough life gain that it was totally feasible.
Sacrifice the Tree with the guildmage ability to get 13 saprolings, then use this one to sacrifice the saprolings and bring back up to 13 creatures from the graveyard (the Tree being one of them). Requires 9 mana to bring an army back, and if you want to run a BUG and have Training Grounds you'd only need 5, and you can repeat at will.
Bonus if you have a Death's Presence, every Saproling sacrificed becomes a +1/+1 counter to put in something you don't intent to sacrifice.
His first ability is nothing short of completely amazing. Even if you aren't complete abusing ETB effects it will make any creature you have an amazing blocker. Your opponent can simply not touch you if he doesn't have evasion or trample. He himself is also fairly large for having this crazy ability. Being black and having four toughness will save you from many removal spell. And if he still dies, his second ability makes this a very reliable engine to grind out card advantage.
The only real drawback to this card is evidently its mana requirements. He eats so much mana and has to live for a round to start doing things that he might seem like a risky proposition, but on the other side you just can't leave this guy stick around. You will never draw an irrelevant creature ever again with him out.
Great and powerful card. Exactly what a mythic should be.
Run him and a couple of Crypt Ghast and you should be good. Even in standard, if can play some tutor to get to those ghasts, all the more better. Personally, just for a side of complete jerk, play grave betrayal, return their cards to your side of the field, and then sack them to return your cards. This guy has great possibilities.

for , Void Maw gets +2/+2 every turn for each other nontoken creature permanent you have out other than Void Maw and Champion of Stray Souls so long as that many creatures also exist in your graveyard simulateously. Just use Void Maw to unexile them all as you swing in so they are available for the next turn.
for those with vast amounts of mana, an additional by the means of Magewright's Stone will allow you to do the combo again, but instead with the guys you just revived, bringing back the ones you just sacked. Alternatively, get 1 more creature into play (with an accompanying creature in the graveyard) to get additional +2/+2's. This allows choice in the route of the combo.
Personally i think this combo is dark and twisted and breaks the laws of thermodynamics on so many levels. (entropy violations come to mind)
