Such a combolicious dragon. More love for dragon tribal!

This + 2 copies of Bladewing the Risen that constantly has one of them legend rule themselves and then bring themselves back with their own ETB trigger = game.

The egg part of Dragon Egg also counts as a dragon so you could get two triggers off of that one card.

Or you could just...you know...Dragon Broodmother and/or Utvara Hellkite. XD

My friend has a dedicated dragon deck. he rarely has more than a couple out at a time. While the effect sounds really nice, it's only gonna be a one or two point burn each cast.

Dragon...tribal? i always saw them as a red finisher, not something to build a deck around.

If the ability was "deals damage equal to the total power of dragons you control" would it feel more mythic-y? I think so. As it stands, this will not be replacing Thundermaw Hellkite in any way, shape, or form. Hopefully Theros brings us some giant, red, flying, firebreathing love.

Nice dragon tribal.
Otherwise its a 4/4 for 5 and firebreathing, mini shivan and meh.

This plus Rite of Replication kicked=180 damage, so it's got that going for it.

Absolute favorite card in the set. Dragon tribal = best tribal.

Most of the 5 mythic creatures feel kinda borderline mythic. This one I'm afraid doesn't cut it as a mythic. Easily being the worst of the 5. Its a shame channel fireball doesn't do hit or myth anymore.

Interesting to note that when this guy shows up, Sarkhan Vol can go to 6 and be ready to finish up next turn.

One of the best cards in the set!

Really what you want to do with the damage is not to deal damage directly to the player, but to ping small fliers out of the air so you can swing in for damage unhindered.

This has amazing synergy with Archwing Dragon. A free shock along with your 4/4 Haste Flyer every turn, at the very least, and easily more in a dedicated Dragon deck. Throw in Door of Destinies for a really nice combo.

Why is it underwhelming with dragonstorm? With just 3 of them, you get 3x3 triggers which each deal 3 damage, and that's 27 damage.

This card is mostly cool because it is like a lord for dragons. I like that they didn't tack on +1/+1 (to make it a 5/5) just because it's mythic, but they still managed to make it a lower-costed dragon for spikes, timmies, and jonnies.

EDIT
I realised I am wrong about this with dragonstorm. Storm makes copies of the spell, so it actually resolves 3 separate times. This means that the first dragon will ETB and trigger once, and then the second will come in and do it twice (itself and the first one) and then the third one will hit and do it 3 times. That means you do 1, 4, and then 9 damage which is only 14 :(

So you need 4 storm count to kill with dragonstorm (assuming you can't do 6 damage in another way).

Once, in an EDH game, one of my opponents used so many Clone effects on my Utvara Hellkite that he had about ten copies of it. Then I cast Karrthus, stole all his copies, and swung with all eighteen of my dragons (there were ten Utvara Hellkite copies).

I had a Warstorm Surge in play. 180 Hellkite tokens x 6 power each = 1080 damage. Everyone else died.

Now if I had Scourge of Valkas in play, even without the Warstorm Surge, I would get 190 hellkite tokens (plus the 19 dragons I had in play), for a total of 209 dragons...and 190 triggers.

39,710 damage. I have Furnace of Rath and Anthem of Rakdos in the deck, too. Yes, it's overkill, but that's the fun thing about EDH.

kind of disappointing, dragons aren't something you flood the battlefield with in huge numbers, they are majestic solitary finishers, this is a bit weird, but I guess it's okay to experiment... thundermaw laughs at this guy though.

Great in a Dragonstorm deck, and cheap enough that it may come out before the storm. 2RedRedRed is a bargain for a tribal Dragon card like this, and the damage can stack up quickly. Storm out a couple Bogardan Hellkites, and simply finish off the opponent (or possibly even opponents) in one fell swoop.

Just put Dragon Egg and Dragon Hatchling in top priority picks (which are decent cards to begin with), and you should do quite well in Limited, IMO.

A fixed 5-drop dragon and a fixed Baneslayer both in the one set.

Goes amazingly with Utvara Hellkite.
Have either on the field (doesn't matter) Drop the other and shoot for 2. For the sake of argument lets say you have Fervor in play and give them haste. Attack with Scourge and Utvara, drop 2 dragons and shoot for 4 twice, total 10 damage in one turn. Next turn, attack with all 4, drop 4 dragons, shoot for 8 four times. Dragonrape.

Your 1-2 extra copies of Bogardan Hellkite in your Dragonstorm deck, for when you draw that Bogardan while pulling the combo off and can't instakill.

This dragon has HUGE potential in dragonstorm decks. Remember Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund and Utvara Hellkite? We're talking about a dragonstorm for 4 that can take out 5-6 players in a single turn. Yes please.

Dragons should not ALWAYS be good in Standard. :P They should be the Best Things Ever in Limited, in Honor of Shivan Dragon and Timmy :)

They should be things people WANT to be able to ramp into with Elves, as happened with Predator Dragon SO much. Part of the reason they are so cool, is because they go GREAT with Mountains of Mana (hehehe see what I did there? ;) ) but they are not things that are usually practical for a Planeswalker to summon, cast, and empower.

They are perfect Natural Monsters to create Challenge Decks with, where MTG meets randomized Dungeon-Crawling almost, because of course your Challenge Decks will be rigged to have perfect mana, deliberately to make it harder. This greatly reproduces the effect of "Just how much {R} do you think the average Dragon has stored in its belly at a given moment, given a 200-5000 year lifespan? o.O " I always like it when I feel like the World, and the Monsters in the World, have a lot more mana at their disposal than I, a mortal Planeswalker. I might have longer-than-average life, so that 50 feels like 20, but I still shouldn't be able to compare with a World for how much mana it feels like I'm throwing around o.O Dragons and Monsters are Living Natural Disasters :D

And THAT'S why they should be at about the power level they usually are for Standard, but actually playable and even great in Commander/EDH. Being able to have such rich stores of mana available in that environment, it's like being a King ordering around a whole cadre of mages to help you summon what you tell them to to wage your WARS, not merely fight petty "duels".

I like that this is a different power than Thundermaw Hellkite. I think Thundermaw Hellkite is one of the worst Dragons for EDH because he's just more tuned for Duels than for Wars. He's nice because he's less than 6 mana and he's relevant, sure, but he's really very close to "A Red Spider" rather than an actual Dragon?

I was underwhelmed at first, since if you have a decent number of dragons already, this is just win-more. On the other hand, though, a 4/4 firebreathing flyer for 5 (color-heavy, but you don't mind that if you're using firebreathing anyway) isn't too bad as a base.

It's a shame that Theros looks to be about as thematically distant from Dragons as you can get. With some curve filler Dragons better than Dragon Hatchling/Egg, this guy would be strong enough for Standard (without being splashable enough to be the next Thundermaw). As is, he's too narrow, forcing you to run weak cards just to get him online.

The design is still great though, 5/5.

Wonderfully underwhelming. Even with Dragonstorm. Why not just put Thundermaw in the set again? There are only 2-3 dragons in M14 in the first place. And no one need worry about dragons being in Theros, there's pretty much going to be a dragon in each Magic set, Maro makes sure of that. ;)

This card seems AWESOME with Hammer of Purphoros and Purphoros, God of the Forge. If we get more Devotion love in the coming expansions he can only get better. I just bought my playset.

conspiracy and any token deck- easily fits jund's colours and you can throw in doubling season.
dragon broodmother
utvara hellkite
I run him in a scion edh- he's usually in the grave with 10 other dragons including tyrant of jund and utvara. After a living death, everything is gone from my opponent's field, 2 people die from taking 50 damage off this guy, I attack, somebody else takes 200 since utvara doubles everything, plus the damage from the attack, and for the one guy still playing lifegain, he gets to deal with exponential dragons and their great balls of fire.
Great card, great flavour, great fun. If only it cost 3rr

The most valuable Dragon Lord you'll ever see in a dragon deck.

Utvara hellkite, Karthuss and this guy with dragonstorm alone wins the game.

A 4/4 firebreathing flyer for 5 is what dragon tribal needed for a long time.

This guy helped me outpace an elf deck. An elf deck!!

I continue to wonder why this is a three dollar card, and Archangel of Thune costs atleast 20 bucks.

Use a kicked Rite of replication on this guy for 180 damage!

If you're awesome and have an echo mage on the field and copy the kicked spell you'd get to do 3840 damage!

But what if you play Riku EDH because you are the johnniest johnny of the johnny's? What if you have a doubling season?

Let's say you have riku and doubling seasons out, lets say echo mage was put unto the field and copied under these conditons and you have three. We'll even say one has his Illusionist's Bracers on today. You play your Scourge of Valkas and copy it giving you three of those for 27 damage. You then target one with a kicked rite of replication. You are looking at casting that thing 9 times for 90 scourge of valkases. That's 8103 triggers for a grand total 753,579 damage! Also you have 93 4/4's if that somehow didn't do the trick. Playing any dragon would do 8649.

The artwork is amazing, first of all.

I like casting Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius with him up, since it counts for the damage to a player for card draw.

I think it's underrated. Just having one of these with its firebreathing wins me games.
Great for devotion with Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx as well.

"Yes, the effects DO stack."

@thegeneric: Only if use that first and THEN Scourge of Valkas comes onto the battlefield. If you do it in reverse, nothing happens.
