It is here to make sure token decks don't get out of control. All the zombies, spirits and vampires have the same names, respectively. Also, 4 mana no questions asked removal is pretty good considering that usually costs 5.

One of those "safety valve" cards that get printed to make sure certain archetypes don't run rampant in the metagame. Looks like Wizards was a bit afraid of the idea of "Black Weenie" decks overrunning Standard. Modern already had Aether Snap, though this is cheaper.

Saved me from a Demon horde brought into existence by Skirsdag High Priest. I was lucky that my opponent was playing so conservatively, or he may have wiped me out in the time it took him to amass three tokens. Luckily I had handy-dandy Harvest Pyre for the priest himself.
In addition to that scenario, it was no doubt essential to my victories in other rounds of the prerelease.

Player 1 has three Lord of Lineage, 3 vampire tokens, and 3 untapped swamps. Player 2 casts Sever the Bloodline on one of the Lords. In response, to keep as many of them on the field as possible, Player 1 should:
1. Transform the targeted Lord 2. Transform the other two lords 3. Transform all of the lords.
Thanks for the help :)
How does targeting with this spell work, is it names when it resolves, or names when cast?

Just a odd question here for this card, as it has been a point of debate with friends, does this card include any creatures with the same name in deck/hand or is it only those out on the battlefield or graveyard?

Seems like a good card against the Illusion deck in standard right now. Once they drop the Phantasmal Image copying the Lord Of The Unreal to give their lords hexproof, you can still target the non-illusion Lord and have your opponent exile the images since the spell doesn't target them.

Don't you people realize that Black has barely any, if any, ability to exile? That makes this card bad ass. Yes sacrifice is kind of like that but exile ability is more powerful.
4 mana unconditional exile isn't actually that bad in a world where people are playing wurmcoil engines and unburial rites. It has two worthwhile bonus effects, in addition.

It only affects the battlefield (not the hand, library, or graveyard). And it only cares about the name on resolution (so @relyt7 either 1 or 2 is the best).
One of the best black targeting removal spells. Too bad it isn't instant.

This thing is already card advantage right off the bat with flashback. Somewhat expensive, but not insanely so. It's repeatable removal. It exiles, which is becoming more and more important with Solar Flare looking to be the dominant metagame at this time. And it could be utterly insane card advantage if the opponent happens to have tokens, multiples or any of the really popular cloning creatures out.
Yeah, I think I'm ready to give this one a 4/5. MBC deck, here I come.

Pick 1.
Whenever you cast a targeted spell, you name the target while casting, before resolution.
P1 controls: Keeper A Keeper B Keeper C
So P2 has to say "I cast Sever the Bloodline targeting Keeper A" (it doesn't matter which one, this is just for example's sake). In response transform Keeper A. Now Keeper A is Lord of Lineage A. Upon resolution Sever the Bloodline looks for Keeper A, can't find Keeper A as a legal target and is therefore countered.
EDIT: I've talked about it with my friend and his opinion was that the spell would not be countered and just exile the one transformed card and cards with the same name. Either way the answer is to pick option 1 but I'm not sure just how bad the extent of the damage (to you) will be.

Maelstrom Pulse was $17 apiece, and I couldn't afford any. This is $0.25 apiece, I ordered 12 and am more than ready to have some fun with it.
Sever the Bloodline only exiles the target creature and all creatures on the battlefield that share a name with that creature. Thus if Sever the Bloodline is cast targeting Primeval Titan, and you have a primeval titan in your hand, in your library, and in your graveyard in addition to the one on the battlefield, only the titan on the battlefield will be exiled.
Relyt7
As the spell chooses the target when it is cast and checks the name as the spell resolves, either A or B is the best option, depending on the current board. Basically, transforming Bloodline Keeper won't save it, since the spell targets the specific object that is the card, but it will save the other two Bloodline Keepers, since Sever the Bloodline exiles all creatures that share a name with the target.
A black removal where you get to target any creatures you want without any other restrictions sounds good enough for me at 4cc, even for sorcery speed. Exile is definitely a better form of removal than destroy (Unless you have a Cemetery Reaper or whatnot), and it just gets better when you can use it against tokens or clone.
The flashback cost might be a little costly, but compared to Chainer's Edict when flashbacked, its effect is certainly better.

Shuts down those pesky Chronozoas, Mirror-Sigil Sergeants, and Spawnwrithes. Also deceptively good in EDH, if you ignore the radiance effect. Two removal spells in one, very nice to have. 4.5/5

This is a nice card mechanically, but the picture is so wrong for it. It should show someone's entire bloodline being mystically cut, with tons of souls being thrown into the underworld. This one random woman just makes it look generic. So much potential there. And there could have been great flavor text too.

should of said "Name a creature, exile all creatures with the chosen name". would have been nice to for this to get rid of hexproof creatures, even if there can only be one Sigarda, Host of Herons on the battle feild at a time.

From a flavor point of view, the name says to me something like you're going back in time and slaying an ancestor of someone that's troubling you now" So, exile makes more sense. In terms of color-pie, exile was initially white and almost never appeared in black on a removal spell. black does a good job of exiling graveyards, but not stuff in play. I really don't feel like this is meant to be a black card. With constructed environments in mind (standard), It is something a lot of decks need. lingering souls is dominating, this card is quite splashable and very meta-ed as black cannot deal with intangible virtue itself and green cannot deal with the tokens en-masse. it punishes players that overextend for an easy kill.
This is a very nice card that unfortunately bleeds the color-pie. Exile perhaps wasn't necessary to still achieve the same constructed impact; however, i love the flavor of the card and exile was important to keep that.

This card is amazing.. hands down 5/5. It exiles and has a good chance of being a 2 for 1 on the first go. Then it chills in your graveyard, scaring your opponent into playing around it.
Once they all have 30 and a half rats on the field, this.

This has: - No additional targeting restrictions. - Exiles target. - Sometimes exiles multiple targets in one resolution. - Reusable. - Breaks the Color Pie. Extremely good for Black. 'Sacrifice' -effect would have been good enough.
Only 3/5 for unnecessary Color Pie bleed.

What happens if they sever the Bloodline my Reckless Waif, and in response I play Moonmist. Will the Merciless Predator be a valid target for the Sever the Bloodline, or did I save my Waifs?

@notbumblebee: it's still a creature, so the target is still valid. Also, if I'm not mistaken, this checks for creatures with the same name upon resolution, not upon casting, and as such, if you somehow flashed in another reckless waif (which has the waif face up) that one won't be exiled. It will only check for other merciless predators.
More generally, great card overall, really strong removal, and the flashback is amazing for slower formats like EDH.

DIE Wurmcoil Engine, Army of the Damned, Sun Titan + Phantasmal Image, and basically any random 'target creature' that might be getting a bit in your way. Twice.
