Remember Heat Ray? Like that, only worse. It should deal double the damage. Its flavorful though.

While it's constructed unplayable because it only hits creatures, limited's another story. I was destroying all sorts of fatties with this thing at the prelease. It only costs two mana and it's an instant.

it's ok. during the pre-release i was usually short of cards in the graveyard to use this against anything big, and the smaller stuff i had renewable answers to. essentially, i think this is good when you are behind, but awful when winning. anti win-moar?
I don't see why this is so bad. It's pretty hard to get any more than 3 damage with a 2cmc instant, even if it's just creatures. This is a cheap form of removal that can be pretty useful an many stages of the game.
Did your opponent just Chain Reaction your army of dudes and his big fatty survived? This can equalize the board position.
How about if you're playing a very burn heavy deck. Early game you dropped several Burst lightning, Lightning bolt and Searing Blaze. if your opponent manages to finally get down a creature that's too big for any of your smaller efficient spells to take down, This guy can get the job done without having to waste multiple cards on it.
This card can be good for coming back from a deficit, or Winning more.

An indefinite amount of damage to a creature for only 2 mana at instant speed.
Compare to Doom Blade. Doom Blade destroys creatures regardless of size, but is completely unable to target roughly 1/5 of all creatures.
This one sometimes can't finish the biggest of creatures early on, but can target any creature, and even if it doesn't finish it, it can soften it up for your first-strikers.
Additionally, exiling cards from your graveyard can be a boon, what with all the effects that return cards from your graveyard randomly. It's like stacking your draws, as far as that's concerned.

Got a lot of corpses lying around? Burn 'em! That'll teach your opponent to kill your stuff...

This card is top-notch removal. If it's constructed unplayable, then so is doom blade. What I like about this is that you can exile as many cards as you want or as few as you need to kill the creature. It's instant-speed, and works perfectly in a burn or counterburn deck since your graveyard fills up naturally. As creatures get bigger, so does your graveyard, so this in an answer to most threats at any point in the game. In limited it is also very good.

This will get rated higher once people start using it outside of the set.
This eats your yard faster than if it were printed with delve. Not everything has flashback you know, you can easily run some delve in graveyard based deck. But this rant has been done, just wish it said (X)(1)(R) delve, x damage to target creature.
Anywho, 2 CMC kills most dudes, certainly playable, people just tend to hate it when burn spells cant hit their opponent.
Hey, can play from the graveyard too, and this is seriously in flavor. Good card.

Delve? What are you doing here? I thought you'd left us back in Future Sight. Nice to see you again.

I'd have played this for {1RR} if it could hit players too. Maybe even {1RRR}. What a sweet burn finisher! As it is, just hitting creatures doesn't make it too sweet. Playable, especially in limited, but still not great.
I honestly don't understand why it's rated so low, i must be pretty stupid.. Not all decks can take advantage of the graveyard through flashback, scavenge or whatever, so why not use it as fuel for this? No need for 4 copies, since you probably don't want to play this before turn 3+, but after that it can easily be an instant speed flame slash or higher. I like it

Step 1: Attach Spiteful Shadows to their creature
Step 2: Harvest Pyre for 20.
