this one is as shocking for it's rarity as for just being here- much like Bridge from Below and Arcbound Ravager.

This could have been nearly anything but Common, like Aether Vial. So they took the average and made it a Rare. I guess to follow Aether Vial.

Nice card. :)

FFS I AM TIRED OF SEEING AWESOME MIRRODIN RARES I NEVER GOT IT'S LIKE THE BLOCK WAS MOCKING ME

Anyways, this card does require some thought, but with a Dark Ritual this could cause problems on turn two, especially if you go first. Most artifact destruction spells are 2cmc too, and wrecks loads of cool stuff, as chainsmoker said.

Is probably why Krosan Grip is in this set. Well, probably not, but still handy.

Here's a tip: Don't play this for X=1 when you've already dropped one with X=2. Do it the other way around. Learned that the hard way once.

@ Continue. Even if you pay 2} for the second chalice, its CMC is still 0

@ EdgarPoeAllen, A chalice set for x=2 will counter the chalice you try to cast for x=1, its CMC is Zero anywhere else but on the stack, unless you want x=0

202.3b When calculating the converted mana cost of an object with an {X} in its mana cost, X is treated as 0 while the object is not on the stack, and X is treated as the number chosen for it while the object is on the stack.

The number of decks that this absolutely fries in Legacy is staggering.
-Delver variants
-Storm
-burn
-zombardment
-belcher
-oops
-others..

Helps against:
-Manaless Dredge
-Affinity
-painter grindstone
-almost everything else..

I literally run as a 4 of in sideboard whenever a deck seems weak against Delver + Fast mana decks. It's fine in multiples too, because you can start locking out entire sections of the mana curve; including responses to you setting it.

Great card in that it encourages Legacy decks to run more expensive spells, increasing the diversity of the format.

just a small question regarding chalice and spellstutter sprite if your opponent played chalice for 1 which needs 2 mana will you need atleast 1 faerie in play + spellstutter (2 faeries) to counter the chalice or would 1 spellstutter is enough?? is the checking of chalice's converted mana cost is 0 or is it based on how many mana was payed for it ex 2,4,6 etc?? or it's counters??
