This card sucks. There's no arguing with it. It's 3R for a 2/1, already weak. On top of that, you have to pay 1B > discard a card to regenerate it. The card would still be bad if it cost 1R. I'd give it a zero, but it won't let me.

I guess holgir found a possible reason why this card's activation cost even includes discarding. But i still don't get why Wizards did not want to make this card more interesting then if it was intended to find use with Uneath creatures. Especially when regarding the generous memorable name which mirrors the creature types this card has. and it actually has an interesting flavor, too - it's the only red skeleton yet.
For this tiny 2/1 body could have easily gained regeneration for or just by discarding a card only - and in case they didn't like having regeneration in a monored deck, they could have added "Use this ability only if you control a Swamp." With both the latter activation cost and a mana cost of this could even have become an interesting choice for Madness decks. Like this, it's just unplayable junk and drafting material for desperate plans.
See, i actually like the artwork and flavor text of this card and i'd really like playing it if it looked like that, but its piteousness in the way it turned out to be just saddens me every time i look at it.

One could make the case that in order for good cards, we must also have bad ones. True as that may be, this guy takes that ideal and goes WAY too far with it. This card is the reason "0/5" stars needs to be implemented. This is, without question, the worst card ever printed (hopefully ever to be printed as well). Did they one day have a meeting and one guy said, "Y'know, we should, just for fun, make the worst damn card to date."?

This guy is obviously meant to be a discard outlet for a Grixis themed deck, dropping something into the graveyard as a target for Zombify or something comprable.
That having been said, the thing that makes it terrible is its cost. At 4CC, there are billions of better discard options, even in block.
I gotta say though, this is not the worst creature in Magic, not by a long shot. You guys have obviously never played with the likes of: Shelkin Brownie

So it's badly overcosted - even in limited, 2/1 isn't good for more than 3 CMC at the most - and on top of that, it's got a horrendously overcosted ability? 2 mana + a discard just to regenerate, which you're going to be doing all the damn time if for some reason you want to keep him around, thanks to his 1-toughness body?
Even in my MtG infancy, when I was just starting the game as Shards was coming in, I saw this and knew it was a pathetically awful card. I can't believe this made it past...well, anywhere. It's a pity, too, because the flavor - hinting at a time long ago when the shards were still connected, etc - is actually interesting.

Vulshok Berserker is a good way to spend your red mana if you want a 4-drop. Smallpox, Merfolk Looter, etc are great ways to pitch cards if you need a discard outlet. If you want a 2/1 body, Goblin Piker is magnificently cheap and even synergizes with the entire Goblin and Warrior tribe. If you want a regenerator, Drudge Skeletons does the job. If you want a red card that gives you a black regenerator, Skeletonize also counts as removal and is instant.
This card is a depressing incentive to not play limited.

Wow. 2/1, And it has an off-color ability to make you discard for regen? And it has no evasion? FOR 4?
Idea: take 1 off the casting cost AND the activation cost. Becomes good, non? :)
2R for 2/1 is good enough for limited. not great but ok. B+disc for Regen- hey it's got a combat trick now! AND it can discard for unearth! :)
would still probably want it to be a 2/2 :P then it might be passing.
The DESIGN is just fine here- I want these kinds of things in decks. The DEVELOPMENT is what's off- just a few number tweaking differences, maybe needed a keyword like haste or first strike...it is JUST SO CLOSE to being a neat card that still wouldn't get remembered for anything but limited, but would have been great in limited...all it needed was....Fixing. :P

Flavourfully, this card makes a lot of sense.
It's supposed to be an extinct creature, right? As in, the entire species of creatures died off?
What I'm getting at is that this creature WAS designed to be horrible. It's like if we found the bones of the Dodo and brought the species back to life: Do you think they'd fare well in this world? Not likely. They became extinct for that reason.
There is more proof that this was made intentionally bad. If you look through the Shards block, there are 7 other Viashino's. I was wondering, "If this is extinct, why aren't all the Viashino's?"
Until it hit me: This breed of Viashino was a victim of natural selection. This couldn't survive in the world around it, and unlike the other breeds, this one didn't adapt to the changing climates or (more likely), an Alara planeshift.
I'm not going to give it 5/5 for exceptional flavour however, because card game-wise, this a very awful creature.
I don't believe I've seen more copies of a single card being passed around the table in draft, pack after pack.
@Mode and @DartParallax: I think you guys put it best. The tiny body for its CMC, and the costly, costly regeneration waste its awesome flavor.

Furthermore its creature type is printed twice on the card... for added clarity? I guess it's at least somewhat interesting from a flavor perspective that viashinos thrived on Jund after alara split apart, but died on Grixis.
