It's peculiar to see a reprint from a set in the same standard environment.
Oh, well, Black Bear is nice.

I wonder if we will ever get to see what Jadar looks like. Or any ghoulcaller for that matter. We haven't even seen Gisa or Geralf yet, despite them being two important storyline characters in Innistrad.

Ten years ago this would have been an uncommon, or maybe a rare. At the very least it would have caused quite a stir among the Magic community. Nowadays, a vanilla 2/2 for 2CC that doesn't come with some extra ability--be it first strike, lifelink, etc.--just doesn't warrant much emotion at all. Interestingly though, for all the 'meh' this card has, its creation still leaves Red to be the only color lacking a 2/2 for 1X.

@ MechaKraken I think that they're leaving some of that stuff open for a future "Return to Innistrad" arc. Those people you listed were some legendary creatures that Infernox10 and I were also hoping to see from Avacyn Restored. It wouldn't surprise me if we dropped in on Innistrad again ^^
There seems to be a lot more that they could have printed there. Cards like Fear, Headless Horseman, and Bad Moon. Looking forward to the glorious return years down the road.

Ten years ago? The hell? Of course the game was different then. Why bother making such a dumb comment. 'Thirty years ago we would have never been able to rate magic cards durp'

Handsome art and awesome flavor. As others have already said, these sort of basic and fundamental vanilla cards are actually an important part of the game, especially in core sets like this one. The game needs Grizzly Bears and Coral Merfolk; the most you can ask of them is excellent flavor and artwork, and this card has it.

Where's Red's vanilla Bear? The aggro colors should have been the first to get them. We still have one control color () with one and one without (), and two aggro colors (,) with one and one without (). Wizards, fix this please.
This guy is great especially in zombie decks. I am a pro.

Good card. Why did they have to put it in M13? Oh yeah, the flavour text.

Should be a Bear Zombie (or Zombie Bear) and be called Grisly Bear

@Eternal_Blue: Ten years ago, this card would have had a "At the beginning of your upkeep. lose one life." clause for being black.

@Blackworm What you are suggesting is completely out of the color pie, and even this card is a redefinition of a part of it. Arguably, this card symbolizes power creep, but at the very least it establishes Black's position in the color pie a bit more clearly. Green has always been a creature-centric color, and so has white (to a lesser extent, and more recently). This card shows that Black is now a creature-color. Red and Blue are not.
Would it hurt the game to give every color a 2/2 for 2? No, because 2/2 for 2's never get played outside of limited regardless of the color. They might see some light in tribal, only when there is nothing else to choose from in the format.

10 years ago, It would have allowed you to search your deck for any card you want.
But as for true vanillas, Yes, Red is Aggro. But it is NOT a creature color. The list is, with top being the best creature color, and bottom the worst,
Green
White
Black
Red
Blue
This is why black has a bear and red does not. The color wheel is more colmpex than Aggro/Control or Direct Damage/Card Draw.

I prefer Bog Raiders for aesthetic-historical reasons. This card is indicative of the moral decline and spiritual decay festering in Wizards. Go hiking in the Olympics. Go kayaking. Hell, take a ferry to Vancouver Island. Whatever it takes.

Black is not strictly a control color, see: Vampire Nighthawk and Phyrexian Obliterator
Red is not strictly an aggro color, see:Fork and Reverberate
The Pie is more complex than that.
