Damn, and I was about to build a mono red deck.

For mono-red mages looking for a way to kill this guy (or any pro-red, for that matter), any sweeper spell that does damage to EACH creature (Pyroclasm, Volcanic Fallout, Chain Reaction, etc.) combined with any effect that makes damage unpreventable (Unstable Footing works best) will get through his protection. Not the most efficient answer ever, but at least he isn't invincible.

I dont know if this is better than what Burrenton Forge-Tender was in standard, but it still fills that voided slot in side boards. Too bad his second ability defensively sucks compared to the Kithkins :-\

(I did notice it was a life gain whenever any player plays a red spell though)

Poor Red...
Seriously, Red has no possibility to kill this guy .

A protected Dragon's Claw} on legs. Very good for a sideboard.

@elviticus; fact is, they don't have to gain life. They can choose not to, to not let you get punishing fire back.
Still, if you need to hold onto punishing fire to shut this guy down, is that not great?

He's cool and all, but he seriously gives me a reason to main Punishing Fire and like it. With red splashing White often, he's easy to remedy, but when I can toss Punishing Fire all over the place and wipe out everything around him, he's more of a blessing than a curse.

It's not a perfect scenario, and limiting the number of this guy in play is important, but he gives the burn player 2 damage on tap for 3 mana whenever he/she wants it. You can't take the Firewalker out with it, but do you really want to? In the right situation you may even be able to get the White player to remove it themselves.

Assuming Burn players want to main Punishing Fire of course.

EDIT: @kryptnyt- "may" . . . ah poop. Time to work on that that skill they call . . . oh yeah reading! lol Thanks for the point-out.

There are multiple ways for mono red to get rid of this card in standard, including but not limited to the mentioned unstable footing. you also have valakut, and stone idol trap.

That said, it is an amazing card against red and will see play in a lot of maindecks and even more sideboards.

Edit: no blazing torch, it read as if the torch deals the damage but apparently the creature still targets it. still a number of ways.

This card is really good. I run it in my red-white control deck with for example Powerstone Minefield and it gains me nice amount of life usually.

Ps. Razor Boomerang will finish this off... you just need 2 creatures (untapped), two turns and 5 mana; or 2 creatures (untpd) and 10 mana.

edit--
My bad Pyroclasm & Chain Reaction both do damage... *facepalm*
Yeah, it sucks for monored. They'll just have to try to outnumber the white player. Somehow.

I'm debating, is this a stronger hoser than Great Sable Stag? Granted the stuff they hose is different in each case, but dang.

@MrPink343 Unstable footing won't work. You still won't be able to target him, just like how you still won't be able to block him with a red creature.

This is so unfair against red. I was running a red white and I ended up losing to this card. If only I had a couple of arid mesa's and more fetch lands I could've played day of judgement or a kor firewalker of my own.

In old days, there are a few ways to deal with this kind of bull; Cursed Scroll and Barbarian Ring are two of them.

Now I guess one could use Leyline of Punishment then use sweep spell to kill the Firewalker.

I hate this guy. hate hate hate.
My rdw involves a perilous myr just to take care of him. The worst part of this was playing with a UW permission deck. I ended up using most of my burn spells on the myr, only to be countered. by far the most ridiculous game I've ever played.

I can't help but think that leyline of punishment was printed at least partially in response to him. No fear of casting red spells while your opponent has this guy out: they can't gain life, and your pyroclasm's damage can't be prevented? Sweet.

@ Lestat13

Red doesn't need to kill your creatures. Red just needs to kill you. And while not even a global effect like Pyroclasm can get rid of this critter, there's plenty of colorless creatures that can go into any deck. Also, Tuktuk the Explorer. But the most reliable method is Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle.

There's also Blazing Torch. Fits right into a burn deck, and even if it's used by a Raging Goblin, it can still bypass Protection from Red.

EDIT: The torch is a source that can damage Firewalker, but red creatures can't target Firewalker with the Torch's granted ability unfortunately. Just play Valakut.

Dacenoctavio: The problem with that is that both of those cards are terrible. Valakut is a powerful combo card but should never, ever be in a competitive mono-red deck. It comes into play tapped, and does absolutely nothing until turn 6, by which point the game should be over. If your opponent has resolved a Kor Firewalker on turn 2 and you're relying on Valakut to kill it there's no way you can win. Blazing Torch is just a terrible card overall. You're making your deck much weaker by running them just to deal with one card.

The real answer card is Dismember. This is the card competitive red decks actually use if they want removal.

I agree is a great card. The probelm I have is I've friend that I've just about taught to player Magic, that plays mainly WHITE he is stubborn to the point that saying the Kor Firewalkers Protection from red cover the Player as well as the card itself.

Thus when I played a Comet Storm and hit him and the other player for 16 points of damage he was protected, (comet storm with 8 mountians and a fire servent) But he is stuborn about the protection from red over himslef to the point that there is no use in playing the game anymore. But he does get stuborn like this from time to time.

I need someone to spell it out the whole card to help him see the logic.

Every f***ing Modern tournament that I join, my opponents always have this on their sideboard but they did not know I have Perilous Myr, Shrine of Burning Rage, Pyrite Spellbomb and Leyline of Punishment on my Side Board.. I love surprises that's why I love being a Mono Red Deck.. harhar..

This guy may cross a river of lava but he can't dodge a bomb, escape a Myr, enter a Shrine and go unpunished. BURN! -I really hate this guy.. he killed me in one of my tournaments that's why.. hahaha

Play Progenitus against him once or just show him a card with the reminder text for protection. (Only let him use cards with reminder text)
Or don't play with someone with anger/sportsmanship issues.

its way better than a bear. cool card for "WR burn everything" and amazing in limited, considering most players will play 2 or 3 colors.

It is interesting that most of the comments about this card talk about ways to get rid of it. Not ways to win with it.

When you think about it, that is when you know the card is pure win.
