Is comboable even a word? Oh who cares, this vedalken is extremely comboable!

Use it to break symmetry on cards like Stasis. Use it to reuse Evoke creature triggers. Use it in counter-intuitive combos with cards like Oblivion Ring, Faceless Butcher, Realm Razer or Tidehollow Sculler. Use it defensively, of course, to protect any permanent from removal or control. Here's some versatility.

This card is absolutely NUTS. There are so many cip abilities this bad boy can fuel it's ridiculous. It's pretty cheap too, money-wise.

Combo enabler extraordinary. He denies point removal, saves himself if need be, can reset oblivion rings or break symmetry with Stasis or Uba Mask

For a less evil strategy: play him with the best shroud enchantment out there: Alexi's Cloak.

Yeah, really nice and cheap card. 4 of this and 4 Jester's Scepter in one Deck and you destroy every plan of you opponent or kill his complete Deck ind a few rounds!

would you mind posting your deck, I'm very interested about how you got our little Vedalken here to do all that awesome stuff.

also an awesome combo with Aven Rif***cher. or if you want 4/4 fliers in addition to life gain, use Sigil of the Empty Throne, Oblivion Ring and Aven Rif***cher. (I havent tried out this combo yet, but I'm planning on it. could someone possibly use it and tell me how it works?)

@DrZygfryd: I don't condone people copying other people's decks so telling the combos might be a lesser evil so...

repeatedly exile permanents=Reality Acid or Journey to Nowhere or Oblivion Ring
copy creatures= I'm not entirely sure but Clone or Minion Reflector might be a good guess
make my opponents skip their untap step= Stasis
scry 10= not sure again but Cryptic Annelid is maybe another good guess
reach into my opponent's hand to get rid of one of their cards= Tidehollow Sculler

I'll leave you to figure out how those work

Alternate rules text: select target permanent you control and abuse its effects until you win.

This card almost made my cousins abandon Magic, because it was so annoying when I used it.

Works well for ninjas, because they don't mind being in your hand much.

what about with landfall?

I would think this would give you a great advantage in that regard especially with something like roil elemental in a blue deck

Dammit Vedalken Mastermind! As much as I want to love you, I just can't get over my contempt for you! Not because my spirit's been broken from being on your receiving end, but because you're everything poor Barrin, Master Wizard should have been. Why do you, who just came out of nowhere, get to be so amazing while the kindly old scholar languishes unsold in card shops?

It's because you're from the Mirrodin bock, isn't it?

most fun way to use him (and lose some friends) is to use his ability while oblivion rings exile trigger is on the stack. that way when the "return the permanent" trigger on the ring goes off first and the permanent stays gone. just rinse and repeat to clear everthing u don't like around. it does sound fun with deranged hermit 2 thought, nothing like crazy amounts of squirrels to perk up ur day.

When I first glanced at the art, I thought he had found himself some sky-blue turntables. Alas...

Still, he's solid and very blue. I approve.

In terms of gameplay (rather than say, flavor), this is my favorite creature in Magic.

I got a Tenth Edition Fat Pack which came with a strategy/cardlist booklet, which, if I remember correctly, advised players to use this to make a reuseable Fog Elemental. It's not exactly Trix, but 4 flying damage is nothing to snort at. Plus, the core sets were meant to be the starting point for new players, so simple combos with non-rare cards make sense to include.

Back to the card: It pretty much walks into combos by accident, denies removal spells, and can even let you reuse a chump-blocker (which could even be himself!). He's dropped in power since Tenth Ed, since you can no longer stack combat damage and then bounce the creature while still killing something, but he's still an all-around awesome dude.
