A decent poor man's Mogg Fanatic, and also good for Gruul Bloodthirst decks. Don't block him? 3/3 Scab-Clan Mauler. Block him? Ping you anyway, 3/3 Scab-Clan Mauler.

Does the M10 ruling not even make this guy superior? Regarding Mogg Fanatic, you'll have to decide either to deal combat damage or decide to activate his ability.

Not bad, provides mild kill power, although your opponent can decide not to block it and just leave it alone... I say power it up and watch it slaughter!

I like to use it instead of Mogg fanatic because you can often outsmart opponents who don't read it carefully. I can't remember how many times they blocked it with their first turn creature thinking I would just ping them, instead I hit the creature and leave them dumbfounded. This is the thinking mages mogg fanatic.

Because it's ability can target a creature (i.e. it's blocker), its effectively (barring pump spells) a 1/1 double striker for R.

Actually, since the damage is dealt even before first strike damage...

THROAT WOLVERINE! (Early in magic History, there was a rumor of a creature with firstest strike, called Throat Wolf. Now, here it is.)

Better than Mogg Fanatic even before the rule changes.

You realize that you can ping its blocker before damage is as-signed, right?

Better than Mogg Fanatic now.

It's like flanking!...

... Only instead of shrink, -1 attack to blocker, an inability to target players, and the fact that it only affects non-flankers, it:

Deals 1 damage, and it affects any creature or player.

Other than that, exactly like flanking.

Like Mogg fanatic, but he also deals combat damage. Yay.

Brute Force. I love it when red gets actual flavor from the color pie.

really the cards you should be comparing this too are tundra wolves and savana lions, and I'd say he stands up quite well to both. strictly better than mon's goblin raiders as red's answer to those two supurb creatures.

Enchant it with Sigil of Sleep. You block? i ping you and bounce the blocker. you don't block i bounce a creature of my choice. Lots of fun.

A 1/1 for {R}, alone is nothing special. Throw in a relevant creature subtype (Beast), and a very legitimate reason for your opponent not to block this guy and you have a very good {1} drop, at common no less.

I also enjoy the fact that it can target itself with it's own abilty, I'm sure in some match somewhere, that mattered significantly. As others have mentioned it can activate mechanics such as Bloodthirst, as well as benefits from cards that will make an opponent less inclined to block it, such as Infiltration Lens or cards that force an opponent to block it such as Lure. Pretty good for a common.

Not bad for bloodthirst decks either, mind you.

If the defending player declares two or more of his creatures to block the wolverine does his ability trigger for every creature declared as a blocker?

Underestimated. He doesn't have to die for his effect to work. Burn the blocker, use his ability to ping a separate target to create card advantage whilst keeping the wolverine alive.

I find it weird that there are creature types for mammals as specific as Wolverine, Badger, and Sable, but nothing gets more specific than Bird, and dinosaurs are dubbed Beasts. I guess mammals stick up for each other.
