Au contraire.
In fact this ability allows the whelp to deal damage in the declare blockers step, thus before any blocking creature is even able to deal combat damage, meaning it can kill any x/* creature on the field equal to its power, including those who didn't block it as well as its blocker even if it had first or double strike.
This card has a good potential as one-drop, and can even get more dangerous when pumped up.

VERY fun in multiplayer- player A blocks my whelp, player B's birds die. And it's a cheap beastie. What's not to like?

Pretty much every utility creature has a toughness of 1 so this is great. You attack and your oppent blocks with a 3/3 beast and you redirect the damage to their Birds of Paradise or Noble Hierarch. Ether way they lose life or important creatures either way you win.

This card has some really good potential for 1 mana. You can get damage through or kill their important 1 toughness creatures. And if you can pump this up, it becomes alot deadlier.

Keep in mind, this is BETTER First Strike in most cases. If the enemy attempts to block with a small creature, just use this ability on the stack to deal damage to that creature before it can even deal first strike damage. If they block with something big and you have no pump spells, just kill something else.

One of the best weenies red has access to. Essentially has super-first strike, with the added versatility of pinging troublesome utility creatures that shy away from combat. Not many one drops are better in Red, even today. 4/5
