Cool card, huge upgrade from the seers. Maybe a bit too powerful, lets you gain huge amounts of life on turn 2.

Yes. For a total cost of 1W and revealing white cards in your hand, you can gain 6, 9, 12, even 15 life, or more. Quite the deal I would say. 5/5

I've managed to defend against a Pestilence deck with just Martyr of Sands and Sigil of the New Dawn. They were literally the only two non-land permanents I had out yet there was nothing my opponent could do, poor guy.

A good turn 2 life boost. It's also good if you don't have much land --- Boost your life and withstand some attacks. Play with Cradle of Vitality to boost the power of another creature quickly. Lots of ways to play with this card

At these amounts of life, it didn't even matter that you're getting -1 card advantage; it bought you all the time you need to cast those spells that get the card advantage back for you. This saw lots of play, and there were decks that win simply by recurring this every turn (using Proclamation of Rebirth).

I like to think of this as 'Healing Salve, except good' :)

This is no doubt one of the best white one drops in the game for so many reasons.

1) Serra Ascendant can come out at full power on turn 2
2) The Chalice of Life can be activated very early game
3) Test of Endurance and Felidar Sovereign
4) Rune-Tail, Kitsune Ascendant can activate very early game, giving you a very solid advantage.

A must have in any mono white life gain decks.

Unfortunately lands are colorless... Still a very good turn 1 life gain chance though!

The sole reason why I have a Felidar Sovereign deck. Absolutely gorgeous card. Also combos with Emeria, the Sky Ruin.

Mistake in development I think.

"three times X" is bizarre wording for cards made after the ancient era of the game... A card like this would typically say "Gain 3 life for each card revealed in this way."

"Pay 1 and W over two turns: gain INSANE amount of life." Does anybody NOT think this card is the s***?

By far, the absolute most evil use I've seen for this card was fabricated by my younger brother. He ran FOUR of them in an Orzhov deck that was built almost exclusively with multicolor and hybrid cards; multiple copies of sh!t like Edge of the Divinity, Divinity of Pride, Stillmoon Cavalier, Souls of the Faultless, Unmake, Voracious Hatchling, Mortify, Deathbringer Liege, Ghost Council of Orzhova for a sac engine, Debtors' Knell to get the sacrifices back, Angelic Chorus to be mean, Sanguine Bond to be even more mean, and Roiling Horror to be downright evil. (And a few Elixir of Immortality and Wrath of God for the Hell of it)

So with all of these extremely powerful white and black cards and the ability to gain on average 12 life per hand thanks to Martyr of Sands here, how did he utilize all that life to dig into his extraordinarily synergistic deck?

Yawmoth's Bargain.

I f*cking hated that deck.

Turn 1: Plains, Serra Ascendant
Turn 2: Plains, this, activate its ability revealing four white cards and go to 32, swing for 6 and go to 38. That's pain.

Life gain usually isn't good unless it's doing something else while it gains you life (like Lightning Helix but straight up lifegain just tends not to be very effective, when you can practically double your life total turn 2, you have a very good card. When you add in the fact that it's a one cmc creature you can tutor up with Ranger of Eos and be recurred by Proclamation of Rebirth and suddenly, you have a good deck.

Great card in theory, but I could never get it to pop as it should.
