I suppose we've found our replacement for Thundermaw Hellkite when M13 rotates out.

Awesome, awesome, awesome.

The Monstrosity is just gravy and will rarely be played outside of Commander.

Chase Mythic of the set.

For the record, Hellenic dragons, such as Python, really were this sinuous. Granted they didn't have any limbs other than wings, but WotC probably had Maniak add them so people wouldn't think they were looking at some sort of winged wurm.

Whoa whoa whoa... A 5 cmc Dragon that could actually outrace Baneslayer (if you have 7 mana open)?

This is pretty sick. More cards need pro-white.

Love me some lightning-breathing dragons. =)
Being totally constructed playable doesn't hurt either.

I guess Fire-breathing dragons are for casual, while lightning-breathing ones are for tournaments?

Because every Magic set needs at least one dragon.

And what a dragon this guy is! Flying and haste seem to be an ever-growing trend on the dragons of now, but pro-White is an unexpected, but very appreciated, bonus. And then there's its Monstrosity ability, which slaps heavy Control players in the face.

Rest assured, when this bad boy hits the field, people will answer it swiftly or die trying.

"...Monsters like none have seen before!"

Heliod this thing has been on Theros for years. Purphoros even told about that one time he charged his hammer using its breath and had a lightning sparring match with Keranos. The only reason you've agreed with the rest of the multiverse that it is actually a thing is because Thassa Trait Doctoring'd you. I still can't believe she even managed to find a practical use for that spell, let alone have it readily available.

I like how serpentine this dragon looks. Fitting, since the word "draco", which the word "dragon" derives from, originally meant "snake".

Of course this card is good. It's a dragon that shoots lightning out of it's mouth!

Just ridiculous. Stormbreath? Thundermaw? What is this I don't even.

They should make a Duel Decks: Stormbreath Dragon vs Baneslayer Angel. They're true generals of their army, considering they can't even touch each other :)

I liked its old name, typhon, better since it fit the Greek theme better

There seem to be some misconceptions about this card. For one, it has the protection ability because it was once part of a cycle. Perhaps white was chosen over blue because of Baneslayer Angel, but that was not the intention of the ability in the first place. The art looks more snakish because it cones from Typhon of Greek myth, but the card was always templates as a dragon and Magic dragons have legs; there was no need to ask the artist to add legs because the artist knew what was expected of the art de***ion of a serpentine dragon. Typhon was the playtest name because that is what the card represents, but the card is not the same as Typhon and could not keep that name given that the set is Greek Myth inspired not Greek Myth Magic Cards and the fact thst typhon sounds legendary and this is not.

That said, awesome card. I kind of wish it had less because I enjoy the last ability the most but it's good enough to be a chase mythic and thus out of my price range for at least a year. I hope red mages who can justofy its sure-to-be-high price have fun with it!

I don't get the hype about the card. Don't get me wrong, it's good, really good, but as I am typing this it is the third most expensive card in the set coming around 23 dollars. Let me do a little comparison. Hypersonic Dragon. some converted mana cost (yes more problematic with the colors, but I doubt this is too much of an issue if people wanted) Same base stats, 4/4 haste flying. This guys has the monstrosity ability which looks nice though it seems most people doubt it will be heavily in use in competitive play. Mr hypersonic has that instant speed sorcery thing which probably is nice but not really game changing. Guess options are always a good thing anyhow for both of them.

Which leaves the protection from white. Which means protection from white right now is the difference from a card that is worth 23 dollars and one that can be found for under fifty cents, since both are available for standard.

I don't play competitively, so it's probably that, but i just don't get it.

Brutal card! I pulled two of these in my pack at the prerelease and came 4th with R/U and the Kraken. Destroys white decks and ones where all the removal is white. Divine Verd... oh.

@Nooble
There are several reasons as to why this is significantly better than Hypersonic dragon, all of them relating to the fact that Stormbreath is a control hoser.

First off, a 4/4 Flyer with Haste means the moment it comes down it'll likely do a good 4 damage to your opponent or remove a flyer. Hypersonic was really only good for that reason, as there are hardly any good sorcery cards to play at instant speed (the best most relevant one is Supreme Verdict).

Secondly, the Monstrosity cost is not hard to get to at all. You wait until turn 6 to play this guy, and make him monstrous the next turn, forcing your opponent to either play out their hand the turn before, remove him quickly (he's a 7/7, so it's much harder to remove now), or take tons of damage. Control decks love their Sphinx's Revelations, so Strombreath punishes them, potentially for 14 damage, for playing them (7 cards, 7 in the air).

Finally, pro-white means he can't be bounced with Azorius charm, destroyed with Supreme Verdict, or exiled with Chain to the Rocks. There's almost no spot removal in blue (Curse of the Swine comes to mind), so he can really only die to counterspells.

Mind you, this is all assuming that Azorius Control will be a dominant standard deck. Im personally running this guy in UWR as a 2 of just for such a matchup.

@StyxTBeuford - slight correction. Supreme Verdict still kills this. Protection does not prevent destroy effects, just targeting and damage.

Running him in Radha, Heir to Keld EDH. That extra RR she pumps out speeds up the time to activating Monstrosity, and if I can give her vigilance, she can attack, add RR, then tap to add G and really speed it up.

For all questioning the difference pro white makes, yes it is that big. Any deck that has a lot of fatties (e.g. any green deck, dragon deck) is vulnerable to control. There are few options to deal with this (i'm thinking the likes of steely resolve and privileged position) but these aren't much use to me, since everyone i play with packs a set of disenchant/naturalize. This is exactly what my dragons have been waiting for.

Divine Verdict, does target an attacking or blocking creature...
"Destroy target attacking or blocking creature."
Just wanna point this out to you, that you're dead wrong. Since verdict "targets" the creature, it's immune to it. Now Wrath of God, sure, that can still kill it.

A 4/4 flyer with haste and pro white along with a fairly significant Monstrous ability? Or phrased in a different way, a card that is solid for constructed and has quite a bit of casual appeal (I know the Timmy in me smiles when I see him on either side of the table). Annnnnnnd.... it's rated at 3.786 currently. Gotta love the "dies to Doom Blade" crowd who downrate something just because it can be countered/dies to removal/ can be swept off the board/exiled/discarded. So can the vast majority of cards in MTG. Get over it. Easy 4.5/5 here.

Bit late on getting my fix of Theros, but it was worth it. Pulled a foil yesterday along with quite a lucky collection of other mythics: Elspeth, Sun's Champion, Master of Waves, Purphoros, God, and Underworld Cerberus.

Edit: Also, now that I've gotten to use him a bit, if you have the mana and can get away with it (pretty big "if," I admit) Stormbreath here is pretty fun with his monstrosity and Illusionist's Bracers. A 10/10 flying with pro-white and does damage to each opponent equal to double their hand? Just gravy.

I see much potential for this guy in Modern. Doesn't die to Abrupt Decay, Path to Exlle, or Lightning Bolt, the most prominent removal spells in the format. The monstrous ability further hates on Path to Exile by providing something to do with all of the basic lands the opponent gives you.

The pro-white continues to be my favorite part of this card. Because I'm a follower, I use him in a gruul elves-and-dragons deck. I have a lot of friends who play white. Being able to ignore Spear of Heliod's destroy effect, Pacifism, Detentio Sphere, etc is so huge. Sure, doom blade still gets him, but doom blade gets a lot of things.

The monstrous ability is expensive, yes, but that's what Xenagos, the Reveler's +1 is for, alongside good old green mana critters. Not quite a 5/5 card, but a very powerful dragon, especially against control players. 4/5

@FarisV Illusionists Bracers wouldn't make him a 10/10. The copy of the monstrous ability still checks to see if he's already monstrous. One would resolve, and then the second would do nothing.

Haste really seals the deal for this guy. Even if they spend removal you still get bang for your buck with the 4 to the face. And if they dont, 7/7 flying + facenuke and potential counter to revelation is strong.
