Here's the best planeswalker in the set, no questions asked. RG is on the beats these last few years, my goodness.

Fantastic Planeswalker. I think if anyone had said "Yeah, how about a better Gaea's Cradle as a +1", they would have been laughed out of the building...
And I know Ultimate's should be ognored when it comes to evaluating PWs, but his is a bit of a disappointment, don't you think?

This guy is a house. I see him fitting perfectly into the gap left by Bloodbraid Elf in modern jund. I think I'll call him Mr. Tumnus.
@Continue The loyalty-abilities-aren't-mana-abilities clause has been in the comp rules for forever. Interesting that they've only now been able to use it. Cards like Pithing Needle can choke off the first ability too.
@Lord_of_Tresserhorn This is RG we're talking about. Creatures and lands are all they play; it's basically "Put the top seven cards of your library on the battlefield."

Gruul gets a third planeswalker before any other 2-color combo gets a second? Poor Simic and Selesnya don't even have any yet. But I can't complain, three badass planeswalkers in my favorite color-combination is pretty rad, and they even have a fair amount of synergy with each other.

I NEED this card for my Jund Dragons casual deck. My greatest fear is that he'll continue to cost $30+ for the entire time he's in standard (which I do believe he will).

He has two good abilities to protect himself with, the ability to make a creature himself or help you cast one, so if you wait a little (maybe in commander?) you might be able to use his ultimate without killing him. Even if it were just seven lands it could still give you enough mana to win the game. Doubling season with any good planeswalker is usually very good, but with Xenagos it's amazing if you can stack it right (remember that ability called scry that they are reprinting in the same set?).

Woah, free tokens-WTF THEY HAVE HASTE????!!!!!??!?!? Anyway, I still think Domri would be better in an aggressive deck, because he brings card advantage and fight club, but this guy is great in midrange.

I can see his +1 ability becoming extremely crazy in saproling or other r/g token decks. Mycoloth and Krenko, Mob Boss can easily provide those tokens.
I'm going to splash red in my modern elves deck now just so i can run this guy, using him to drop a Regal Force a turn sooner likely with mana to spare should be insane.

Xenagos is a GREAT plansewalker for his CC. No downside to him. He creates a blocker to protect himself for 0. Great on the tempo play, get him early to create a bunch blockers that net you a ton of mana in the long run. Then if you are lucky enough to have ultimate go off, you gain HUGE board presence.

Definitely a strong planeswalker no doubt, my friends debate "Why Xenagos over Domri Radei?" I just response with "Why not both?" Given you have 3 creatures you could always just Xenagos into Domri on turn 3
This guy practically replaces Sarkhan Vol in Thromok EDH. Any token deck that plays Red and green in Commander needs this guy.

Ruling in the pro tour by a head judge, xenagos' ability IS a mana ability and CANNOT be responded to.
thought_jar
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
@jaelinfunk
As of 16/10/2013 the rules are
605.1a An activated ability is a mana ability if it meets three criteria: it doesn’t have a target, it could put mana into a player’s mana pool when it resolves, and it’s not a loyalty ability. (See rule 606, “Loyalty Abilities.”)
I agree it can't be responded to, but the mana ability bit, nope.

Amazing! But can we hurry up and make a simic or selesnya planeswalker.
I was thinking:
Simic Guy 3UG +2: Return a creature to your hand. Add X mana to your mana pool in any combination to your mana pool where X is that creature's toughness. -3: Put 5 +1/+1 counters on a creature you control. -8: You get an emblem with, "Whenever a +1/+1 counter is removed from a creature you control, you may move it to another creature you control. Starting Loyalty: 5

Xenagos is so nice. I don't mean just for Standard or Modern or Limited or EDH. I mean for everything.
If you're playing a decent amount of creatures, he can be free. He also gains loyalty, and since you've got creatures out, this doubly makes him hard to get rid of. But keeping creatures on the field isn't the easiest thing to do.
If you have no creatures, you can put out a creature to defend him and/or use it to attack. But for a 2/2 haste creature isn't the most cost effective creature if that's what you're playing him for.
He starts at 3 loyalty, so he can't get his ultimate out too quickly. Also, he's a deranged Satyr. It wouldn't make sense if he was loyal to you at all!
All in all, I'd love to get 20 of them and snuggle with them in bed, and I think you should to...
Wait, you don't snuggle with you cards in bed?
Oh... well... uhh...

I want one more of him so I can put together one of my theme decks. The theme would be "A Strange First Date". It would feature Radha, Heir to Keld as she tries to escape Xenagos's amourous intentions. It will feature a cast of Keldons, Satrys, and Gorilla Berserkers. Giant Growths of both colors, a variety of variations of Fog that helps red and some lightning bolts wrap this up. Looks like it will be one hell of a party!

I was wondering about his -6 ability; what happens to creatures who have X/X strength and toughness which is dependent on the X amount of mana you paid to play them (Mistcutter Hydra for example)?
I assume that they would just be exiled, but I wanted to see if there was an official answer to this.

At the prerelease, the best thing that has ever happened happened. I get my pack and open it up. I pick up my first booster, tear the wrapper, and I gaze upon the mediocre commons that I saw at first. But then it happened. I see, near the back of the pack, the border of a planeswalker card. I think, "Hey, sweet! I got a planeswalker! I can certainly use this." So I pull it out of the pack and I read the effects. By this time I am drooling rainbows onto the table. And then I set it down, and I realize I HELD IN MY VERY HANDS A FOIL COPY OF XENAGOS, THE REVELER.
It was a good day.
I have to say, I'm a little disappointed that the Born of the Gods version of Xenagos doesn't have the type line "Legendary Enchantment Creature Planeswalker- Xenagos God."

@syntheticbiology232 Bolas has enough story time for a while and not every villain has to be black. Blue could easily be seen as an evil color as well because they could be valuing knowledge over basic humanity and red because they are seen as very emotion and could be easily angered. In New Phyrexia I believe white was the evil color and could be evil because they want value the whole over a single person and could take away basic freedoms. Green as well because they can be savage monsters just wanting to rule their respective area every color has a dark side not just black and ps bolas and koth would not work well in Theros

honestly he is a cool planeswalker and all but he really has no presence on the field i've never been worried when my opponent played one and i've never felt too confidant after putting one into play most of the time u have no creatures in hand or on the field to make his plus 1 effective enough to make a difference and his 0 is cool and all but it would have and could have been so much better if that was the plus 1 but he is still a really fun casual walker to use

I have a very small complaint: the name of this card is too similar to Xenagos, God of Revels. When you talk about the god card, you can use the word god; but everything in this title is in the god card's name. He's also Xenagos, he's also a reveler. "Xenagos, the Stranger King", his title from the Theros novel, would've caused much less confusion, as the god is no longer a king.

I find myself completely uninterested in the Planeswalker form of Xenagos. The +1 is very playable, especially with the 0 feeding into it, but the -6 is one of the most underwhelming ultimates ever printed, especially since everything you don't play is exiled. As far as R/G planeswalkers go, I'll stick with Sarkhan Vol and Domri Rade.
On the other hand, there is Xenagod, which I am more than happy to use.

I'm a little miffed that all the goats are white, satyr's are red/green. I might still make a springjack shepherd, trading post, Xenagos deck though - purely for the flavor of it. In standard I'd say Akroan crusader, young pyromancer and Akroan horse
