It has 1 toughness so if it takes any damage it will die as well as damage you, or you can use it's ability which... doesn't raise it's toughness, costs double the normal firebreathing cost, and damages you to use... and it's... it's rare... and... ... seems legit.
No seriously. WHY. WHY would the make this!?

2/5 after four votes? Are you people dense or something? Just look at Jackal Pup. This actually has upside compared to that.

Are you people dumb? It's a one drop 2/1 in Red! It really probably shouldn't have been rare, but being able to deal as much damage for as cheap as possible is the main component of red decks.

I'm sorry, but when a rare doesn't compair all that well to Bellows Lizard of all cards I think you have problem.

Now that mono-red doesn't have things like Stromkirk Noble, Kuldotha Rebirth, and, going even further back, Goblin Guide, Wizards decided to reach into the past for an old toy that did wonders back in the day, but might not make as big a splash in modern magic. I agree that people are likely underrating this card, but forgive me if even I don't see how powerful it is. Time will certainly tell, of course. I'm prepared to be pleasantly surprised by how strong this creepy satyr really is.

I love the art on this guy. And this guy seems to be taking a lot of flack, which makes me want to love this card that much more. I will definitely be giving him a chance to prove himself. High hopes!

I liked Jackal Pup back in the day, but right now this just seems like an incredibly quick way to get yourself killed.

Strictly better than Jackal Pup, and the art lets you know just how insane that Satyr is.

I feel like Wizars was a tad too cautious with his firebreathing effect, though.
1Red and one damage for the cost seems like a bit much.
(Red would have been ridiculous of course, it would have been like a red-flavored Nantuko Shade one drop.)

However, it shouldn't be underestimated:
As it is, it will hurt you just as much as your opponent. But you don't mind that if it deals more damage, because overall you should be the one delivering more damage in the first turns, which means you'll win if it works out. It can help to twerk out the little needed amount of extra damage to kill a blocker without using another card, or to hurt your opponent a little more. It will definitely have its use in RDW.

I suppose all the people mentioning Bellows Lizard have really no idea how aggressive cards work, huh? A 2 power 1 drop that gives you a mana sink and can trade up later in the game is really good.

The card doesn't even have a drawback outside monored mirror matches, as if it's gotten to the stage of the game were YOUR life total matters, you have lost already.

Rakdos Cackler, sure the deck that wants this probably wants them both for maximum 1 drops... But let's compare the two.

They both swing in for two early on and have a mostly irrelevant drawback for an aggro deck. Firedrinker is easier to remove due to the single point of toughness, opponents get bonus value for killing it with burn and so on. You're probably never going to block, but if you ever need to Cackler can come in as a 1/1 to block, this dude can just go straight to smashing face first into an attacker from being played turn 1... With your face. But still, your face will probably hit that creature for 2 (or more) damage. The firedrinker will also make you suffer if you get caught out by a savage surge or a flash creature.

On the bright side, the firedrinker has a mana sink. 1/2 firebreathing isn't amazing, but it's certainly there for you. What that means overall is, Firedrinker Satyr will punish you for misplays more but has more potential for damage than Rakdos Cackler. Kind of fitting for a rare really.

The art looks like it's from an older set like Fallen Empires or The Dark. It doesn't share the same smooth and modern look many cards have now.

this creature is played in red aggro decks (sligh, rdw, burn you name it) where your own life total doesnt matter. A 2/1 for R with a pump ability to keep it relevant in the late-game seems good.

I wonder if a tolerance for pain is required due to the manner in which they will expose you to all kinds of weird and kinky sex. Because that's a what a real Greek satyr revel would be like.

2/1 or 2/2 for R are almost always strong, unless they sometimes can't attack (Goblin Cohort). Sure, Foundry Street Denizen could be a 3/1 on the second turn, and Legion Loyalist has haste and plenty of upside. But Firedrinker Satyr is good on both turn one and turn five, regardless of what you draw or what your opponent has. All those times when you topdecked the 1/1 Denizen or cast Loyalist against a control deck where it is nothing more than a Raging Goblin, the Satyr remains a consistent 2+/1.

People do not seem to understand how sligh decks work. In that type of deck, this card would be a major component. Look at the rating increase as players understand how powerful this card can be.

While this is going to be a staple for a Suicide Red build, at Rare and with such bad art, I can't rightfully give it a strong rating.

Another example of why a single rating system isn't sufficient, because this is a 4-star playable card at the very least, but with atrocious art and a strange rarity choice. I draft pretty often, and he doesn't seem like the kind of thing that would bust open the format, concerning Fireshreiker of all things is at uncommon in M14.

I have done the math, he's ok. He will do some work in standard, but short of that his is pretty shit. In standard now there is enough 2/1 one drops to make him a iffy early drop and drawing him late game is basically a dead draw. He will one for one at minimum, and in that event you take more damage than not. Unblocked he deals n+2 damage and you lose n-2 life.

What I'm saying is watch him. He isn't an absolute tank and the rush beast people make him out to be. Jackal Pup was good in its day, but not so much now. I`d normally take Rakdos Cackler any day over him in standard. You won`t be blocking with the satyr anyways and if you can make a deck worth a damn you wont use the satyr as a sink until turn 5+, at which point you should have won. Be sceptical, but don`t take it as a horrible card. It is a shit rare, but not a shit card.

It's no goblin guide or vexing devil that's for sure.

Underwhelming as a red 1 drop. It doesn't do damage as soon as it hits the field, it makes the perfect burn removal target (oh hey, I kill your creature and burn you- yay 2 for 1!), and its firebreathing is too slow to be worth much.

1R AND 1 life for +1/0 is pathetic. R and 1 life for firebreathing would have made it quick enough to be playable. 1R and 1 life to give +2/0 firebreathing would have been acceptable as well.

As it is, it's an incredibly mediocre rare so it gets an incredibly mediocre score: 3/5

This guy will make new players drink a lot of fire in the prerelease, then take him out of their decks for game two. I'm not saying he's bad, just dangerous in the wrong hands.

It makes you nervous as hell when you have him in play. You can still use him in combat with first strike (Coordinated Assault, Spearpoint Oread), but you sweat the whole time. If he ever gets through unblocked, he has, "1Red: you and defending opponent lose 1 life each" which is always nice in super aggressive red.

I never played with Jackal Pup, so I might not be this best judge of this card, but it seems like a pretty bad rare, but still decent.

Bellows Lizard wasn't played very much in RtR limited, and this card is Bellows Lizard with +1/+0 and two drawbacks. At rare, the drawback in the ability seems somewhat unnecessary.

It's Nantuko Shade, but crappier. Still a good card, 1 cmc less but 1 cmc more per pump and does damage to you. A good player doesn't care about damaging themselves if it will win them the game.

Honestly never thought suicide red would be a thing, but here we are. It REALLY isn't that great to me though. Yes, I admit I don't tournament or FNM so I don't have much experience, but this thing is just lack luster. Everything your opponent can do to it hurts you, and everything you do to it hurts you. Just to prove that point I smashed this thing with a corrupt around turn 9 with sanguine bond on the field. Needless to say, my opponent wasn't happy. Point is, this thing is useful to some degree early on, but the longer you wait the more of a liability it's going to become.

Some random guy after a game day event kept singing this card anthems of glorious praise and was willing to sell his child's soul to satan if I'd trade mine to him. I said "Sure!" and made off like a bandit, and I was even building an R/B aggro deck.

I know how the game works, and I don't care how good or bad this guy is... I dunno, I can't seem to work up any love for him for anything but his trade value. I ripped another one in my last pack, so I'll give him a shot... but until he's proven himself, he's on the chopping block!

I know where this fellow fits: In a Zedruu Commander deck! You get life and cards, the opponent has to deal with the liability of self-inflicted pain. Put Indestructibility on him just to be extra sadistic.

And I just realized he also works well with Soul Conduit. Burn yourself a few times, then switch life totals.

So, after seeing this Satyr in action (and originally being a detractor) I have to say that he is a house. I originally thought that he would just not be worth it against any midrange or aggro but the truth is that he has little to no drawback against anything but another red deck. Even then, he's still likely dealing the opponent more damage than he's dealing you. My only complaint (as a player, design is well-done) is the lack of a second toughness. Trading this with a leftover mana dork sucks.

Also, I really like the way my opponents play against this guy. They often won't trade Sylvan Caryatid with it, instead letting me send extra damage to the face. The plays based around his drawback, while they are hard on me, are amazing and remind me of how much I enjoy magic as a game. I once had an opponent exactly lethal me with a Polukranos, World Eater activation after I didn't block .

Magic in 2013...Wizards prints a strictly better Jackal Pup, and people are in the comments complaining that it's "too cautious."

Power creep sucks.

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
I would change his pumping to:
RedRed: Firedrinker Satyr gets +2/+0 until end of turn and deals 2 damage to you. That feels a heck of a lot more rare.
(I am not a fan of powercreep. This pumping just seems more fair. And it is different in a more exciting way.)
(There is also still huge potential for this card to hurt you more than it helps you.)

@ShatterPalm - It's like HotHit said, you are punished for mis-plays with a guy like this. No way should he have been on the battlefield on turn 9, sitting around so you can smash him.

In the right hands it's a good card.

I guess my personal feeling is that he shouldn't necessarily be a rare due to his vulnerability but otherwise it works well in the right deck.

For a second there thought this had the exact inverse name of Satyr Firedancer. Though It's usability is the exact opposite of the Firedancer's.

Anyways, this card sucks @$$. Or rather, they were WAY too afraid that a 2/1 in red would just be too good for some unknown reason. I really don't understand why.

Iroas, God of Victory

2RW
As long as your devotion to red and white is less than 7, Iroas, God of Victory isn't a creature.
Creatures you control can't be blocked except by 2 or more creatures
prevent all damage that would be dealt to attacking creatures you control.

removes drawback on its first ability. ME WANT IROAS.

Since he is a 2/1, any pump you give him with his ability will only result in more damage to the opponent then to you. Sorta the same way Putrid Leech works. Give a little to get a little, right?

Obviously you won't want to block with him, since because of his ability, you would still take the damage and possibly lose him as well. To that end, it's up to you whether you want to run either this guy or Rakdos Cackler in your 1-drop slot. Though its interesting, usually I don't see "backfire" abilities on cards other then black. I'm sure this guy will interact very well with Iroas when the latter is released =)

Definitely an underrated card. I recently drafted a Sligh/Burn deck in MTGO's Cube... and when I got this guy out turn 1, I won. Period. It's really that simple -- he is that good.

Granted, he's a lot better when you follow him up with something like a t3 Sulfuric Vortex, but yeah. IMO, he is the king of the reckless Red 2/1 1-drops.

I get the reasoning behind it, but it just doesn't cut it for me. Hit it with searing blood to kill it and deal 5 to the controller. Even a simple lightninhg strike kills it and deals 3. Flash or token generating spells screw it over as well. Not to mention the pump effect is too expensive (you could use that mana to play a burn for 3-4 damage instead of 1that may or may not get through) not to mention it damages you too.
