Will not see Standard, but has potential to be a very nasty graveyard-matters Commander. Dredge your library, pump him up, sac a Lord of Extinction and swing... The last ability is gravy; with Crucible of Worlds and Life from the Loam Jarad can stay out of the Command Zone permanently.

Even his first ability makes him good: for 2 Black instead of 2, he's a +2/+1 Lhurgoyf with very relevant tribes. His second ability feeds himself and hurts an opponent at the same time. And his third makes it hard for him to stay off the battlefield. Elves frequently don't mind lands hitting the grave, so it's definitely a neat possibility for elf tribal EDH. I can see a few games ending suddenly on a sacrificed Heedless One or Jagged-Scar Archers.

Exquisite Blood with Sanguine Bond. Mindcrank. Jesus. I think I just had a feargasm. Don't even try to deny it. YOU ALREADY HAVE A COMMANDER DECK DESIGNED FOR HIM.

I really like this guy.

He's powerful, but not broken, and full of fun synergy. One can tell he was designed with Commander in mind given the interesting mix of abilities. I hope to see more legends like this all through the Guilds in Return to Ravnica block - it'll be a nice way to really add more leaders to Commander.

4wolf359--Not a full 99 list yet, no, but I'm making one. And I do think that Commander is the only format other than Vintage or Legacy where he might be fair. :P Might.

Worth consideration: His second ability says EACH opponent. I'm building an EDH deck for him now that I have him. The gameplan is to pump a creature to about 40 power, then sac it and knock out the table.

It's a nice theory, and with some work I might be able to get it running consistent.

This guy is a straight-up HOUSE. As I write this, he's been on sale for all of three days, and I've seen him as an EDH General, a member of the 99, and a few times in 60 card decks. Each time he touches down, there's a collective gasp from all the other players, and everyone starts trying to figure out how to kill him. Not only is he a bigger Boneyard Wurm, itself a fearsome beater in the right deck, but he also has the ability to sac your Boneyard Wurms, Lhurgoyfs, and Mortivores for massive life loss all around. Combo that with the fact that HE JUST WONT STAY DEAD, especially when running Life from the Loam to recur your sacced swamps and forests.

He is far more fearsome than he appears at first glance, and even at first glance people start quaking in their boots.

That is EXACTLY what a legendary creature and a mythic rare should be, powerful enough to inspire fear in your opponents.

My favorite commander ever. He is perfect, my favorite color combination, my favorite tribal type (Zombie), head of my favorite guild, plays perfectly in a grave-synergy deck, which is my favorite type of deck. He has a powerful ability and is an amazing combo piece. 5/5

So in the story line, he sacrifices himself to save his son. He died being sacrifices to Rakdos. He then comes back to live as a lich. And the Golgari Guildgate says "Enter those who are starving and sick. You are welcome among the Swarm when the rest of Ravnica rejects you. Jarad is Jesus! If you see that his son is a metaphor for child...Children.. Then you see that he is being sacrificed to Rakdos who is represented by Satan.. Add that he came back to life.. And the motto of the guild being about accepting the sick and starving. The only conclusion is that Jarad is magic Jesus!

@Lyriq: No, but you could use the Overgrown Tomb as either one. His ability requires you to sacrifice two lands - at least one must have the subtype Forest, and at least one must have the subtype Swamp. Although Overgrown Tomb is both, it only counts for one.

Activate Mossbridge Troll's ability, sacrifice it to Jarad's second ability, and win the game. Then wonder why you didn't win earlier because you had enough stuff to pump Mossbridge Troll.

This guy screams 'RESPOND NOW' in a casual dredge deck. He's also a house in this duel deck. 5/5

How has noone mentioned Phyrexian Devourer? It's sac trigger can only be on the stack once, as mentioned in its rules section, so in response to this trigger you can activate its ability as many times as needed then sac it to Jarad. THAT'S how you win EDH.

If someone plays Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord has one creature in the graveyard, but has a corpsjack menace in play as well. Does he then get two +1/+1 instead??

You can practically cast him straight from the graveyard. Just tap and sac.
Then dredge Life from the Loam and brush your shoulder off.

@katwomyn4ever

Jarad's effect does not place +1/+1 counters on himself, so it is unaffected by Corpsejack Menace.

I really wish he could sac himself to his ability. He's a lich, so he shouldn't fear death, and his +1/+1 for each gravecreature would provide such nice synergy. Then of course just sac some lands and he's reborn. I feel like that's what would really push him over into mythic territory. As is, he's still fairly powerful, just not as much as he could be if he were practicing the true tenets of Golgari: all is fertilizer. All will be one eventually, anyways.

Edit: That said, after playing him in standard 'Dredge,' the second ability can be demned powerful, and it's exactly what G/B needs to get through straight to the life, something it isn't always able to do. I still wish he could sac himself, but I do have more respect for him now.
