Harmonrova, it's actually a 2 for 1, as you use this card and your creature.
However, with undying and other graveyard fun, I can't imagine this ever being an actual 2 for 1.

Sacrifice a 1/1 Spirit token to destroy Griselbrand? Sounds like a fair deal. The sorcery speed is the only thing holding it back, but nobody's perfect.

Allow sacrifice outlet and death-trigger effect, also bypasses the typical nonblack restriction of destruction. Excellent.

Woot! I used to play this in Standard with Shards of Alara.

It's not one for one, harmonrova, it's one for two. You spend a creature AND this card to kill one creature.

Hm...with Gravecrawler, Geralf's Messenger, other undying fun, token action...the main drawback for me is sorcery speed.
The over all strategy is to keep the board clear and use creatures like Blood Artist or Falkenrath Noble to turn every creature death into a ping against the opponent. When all of your creatures ping when they die, saccing them to Bone Splinters to remove your opponents creatures and ping them yet again is no sweat with the built in life gain. Other cards such as Death Cultist, Sylvok Lifestaff and Rite of Consumption keep a positive life swing so that potentially not having a constant stream of blockers isn't as much of a problem.
I use Nim Deathmantle for recursion, a little evasion, and some pump for Rite of Consumption. Its kind of an aggressive/control style of deck but its a lot of fun to play, very active. Throw in Undying Evil for some additional shenanigans and Jinxed Idol for a clock and have a good time =)

Just ordered a set of these in foil for my Abyssal Persecutor deck for under $4.00! The artwork on this reprint surpasses the original in every way imaginable. Removal like this and Tragic Slip are so evil and yet so elegantly designed for a deck that thrives on sacrificing, morbid and even unearth.
It's cards like this that define black, and seperate the players that would otherwise be too intimidated to reap the rewards of graveyard based play.
5/5 - awesome reprint!

I'm sure this will see play in Limited--heck, I'd play it in Limited because removal is removal. Sadly, in some regards people will assume that since Standard is littered with undying creatures that it will surely make it easier to ensure that Bone Splinters is a 1-for-1 instead of a 2-for-1. They are all wrong; undying and tokens aside, you will usually be looking at the raw end of the deal. And if you can sacrifice an undying creature, are you sure you wouldn't have rather used it to chump block instead?

And suddenly, Nils Hamm changes this from a 3 star card to a 6 star card overnight. Awesome reprint art! :)

Launches my Black Cat at anything that's not indestructible or hexproof? Good deal, I officially dub this Death by Katza.

The effect speaks wonders for itself, the art on the other hand, is a testament to the unique and unequalled vision of Nils Hamm.
Keep it up.

Only good in decks were you WANT to get rid of your own stuff. Otherwise, just go with other black destruction: Doom Blade, Victim of Night, etc. The extra 1 CMC is worth not sacing a creature.

The more I look at this card, the more I want to add it to my zombie deck. I also REALLY love the art on this. Possibly my all time favorite card art.

what this goes really well with is black/white human sacrifice decks and morbid decks where your creatures dying is a reward as often as it is a cost. You use this to pop a doomed traveler with an avacyn's collar and kill your opponent's most dangerous creature. then use the spirits to activate Skirsdag High Priest. (Sounds a bit unrealistic, but I regularly pull stuff like that off by turn four in my human sacrifice deck.)
ive been using this on my demonlord of ashmouth, best play ever aside form young wolf or gravecrawler i suppose lol 4/5

This works so beautifully well with Undying. "Oh, you're not going to trade that creature with my Undying creature when I attack? Oh well, in that case, I'll do it for you."

since it doesnt say "sacrifice a creature you control" can you sacrifice one of your opponents creatures?
TheZigs

@ibanez No. You can only sacrifice your own creatures. Otherwise, don't you think this card would have a higher rating as a 1 mana "destroy two creatures"? Sacrificing is something that you can only do with your creatures. Sacrifice takes a creature (or whatever you're being told to sacrifice) and take it straight to your graveyard. Indestructibility and regeneration doesn't interact with it.
