Compare to Skullclamp... The plus side is that your creatures no longer need to die the moment you equip them, that bad side is you creatures cannot die when you want it to :)
This might work well in suicide black type of deck that requires a lot of life loss to cast spells.

Funny how this druid staff is going to be carried exclusively by phyrexian horrors and zombies.

Myr Propogator, pump tokens for defense, who cares if they die?

Ha ha what they turned clamp into. XD A few small changes, and a 5/5 card turns to a 0.5/5 one.
And no: it doesn't work well in suicide black. Suicide black is about destroying your opponent as fast as possible with highly efficient cards with hefty drawbacks. That works only if it follows that line in a very consequent way. Adding suddenly cards that are NOT about destroying your opponent simply gives your opponent room to breath and deal with your threats.

This goddamn stick can make your limited games so much longer. It's pretty low pick, but it isn't useless.

I wouldn't say that this is what they turned Skullclamp into, rather than splitting it up into this (triggering on death, adding similar stats and same costs) and Infiltration Lens (drawing two cards like it's predecessor, also has the same costs)

4/5. Compare it to Bonesplitter or Leonin Scimitar before you compare it to Skullclamp. It won't warp the format, and at the same time is very good in limited with the current Replica cycle and you can turn your eldrazi spawn into a lot of life if you want. Other than that, its good on any creature you can target. Sacrifice abilities are not optional here though- they make for a good response to exiling or shuffleintodeck removal.

Quite usefull on a sunspear shikari. Almost all of the options open to your opponent at this point are good for you.

If you equip it to a card like Caustic Hound and then suicide attack, it can refund three of the four life points you lose from its death. Its dead cheap too, but of course less use against infect decks.

Guys, this card is seeing play in standard in UW. It is actually quite decent.

Pfff. That's cute, guys. I'm gonna put it on my Magma Phoenix and fling it for a total of 7 damage to target creature or player, while negating my lifeloss and blasting away everyone's Cyst Bearers, Corpse Curs, and Insect Infect tokens.
@ Cyberium:
I know just how to solve your problem: Attach this to Ember Hauler for a cheap beaty beatface goblin who can be like a weaker Lightning Helix.
EDIT: Fun with Infiltration Lens. So much fun with Infiltration Lens. They kill your attacker, you get 2 cards and 3 life. I love it.

I like how this card basically completely nullifies a Kuldotha Rebirth all on its own when thrown on any 1-toughness weenie.

Take this staff my Planeswalker, it will guide you through your many journeys ahead of you.
I run four in my Birthing Pod deck, definitely helps with the early game after playing and activating the Pod with phyrexian mana...not to mention the potential life total swing after I stop paying with life.

If you compare this to average equipment (not mythic rares like Swords or broken cards like Skullclamp) I think its a perfectly fine card for its cost. I would say its in line with the likes of Bonesplitter and Leonin Scimitar. Bonesplitter is more aggro, Leonin more balanced, and Lifestaff more defensive.
This card works great in one deck I play that utilizes Cheap Phrexian Mana creatures, Rage Extractor and Skeleton Shard.

Attach this to a Soulcage Fiend for zero drawback when he dies.
