Ugh! It's people like Grizzlegrom that are ruining this country. What's wrong about having a zombie in the army? They're no different than any other person, except they wear their clothing a little differently and their skin hangs off here and there. Grizzle needs to understand that policies like "Don't Ask Don't Bite" are destroying zombies' freedom all across Dominaria!

Zombama 2012! :3

Seriously though, terrible card.

Come on, it's a two-mana 2/2 creature with two nice abilities! :) Sometimes it's a 3/2 creature with a drawback, and sometimes it's a 1/2 creature with lifelink, but most of the time it's something that you can make good use of.. Yeah, Tidehollow Sculler is a better two-drop, although it does something different! :) Together with Necromancer's Covenant and white control elements, black/white zombie decks are pretty interesting..

The thing I like most about it is it is a soldier/warrior. You get both sides of the coin with him.

Making him a soldier zombie warrior was a bad idea and ruined this cycle. If you notice, the printed creature types of this cycle create a cool pattern.

A 2/2 for two with 2 decent abilities isn't bad. Why is this card rated so low?

I find most people's complaints of this card (when they acctually bother to explain why they don't like it) are either unjustified or are fretting over insignifigant things. As far a I can see, adding the additional creature type to Putrid Warrior only made him better.

Why would you ever choose the "each player gains 1 life" option? That would make him effectively do one measly damage, and you would gain a single measly life. Whoopdee-***-do. In multiplayer, there is even less reason to choose that option, so again, why is it even there? Couldn't it simply have been "you gain 1 life"?

9 times out of 10 you would put him in aggro and pick the loss. But when your on the ropes, the lifegain could save the day! An interesting 2/2 for 2... 3.5/5

Stick a ping ability on him.
What happens if he deals damage to several different things at the same time?
Does the ability trigger multiple times?
What if he is no longer on the battlefield when he deals damage?

Part of an interesting cycle of 2-mana enemy color gold common creatures in Apocalypse:

Gaea's Skyfolk - GreenBlue (Elf Merfolk)
Goblin Legionnaire - RedWhite (Goblin Soldier)
Llanowar Dead - BlackGreen (Zombie Elf)
Putrid Warrior - BlackWhite (Zombie Soldier - later Warrior was added)
Razorfin Hunter - BlueRed (Merfolk Goblin)

Invasion, the first expansion in the block, had a cycle of 2-mana friendly color gold common creatures, all of which had protection from their shared enemy color:

Galina's Knight - WhiteBlue (Merfolk Knight)
Llanowar Knight - GreenWhite (Elf Knight)
Shivan Zombie - BlackRed (Barbarian Zombie)
Vodalian Zombie - BlueBlack (Merfolk Zombie)
Yavimaya Barbarian - RedGreen (Elf Barbarian)

As for this card itself, it's interesting in that you can choose if you want to push through one extra point of life loss, perhaps hitting for 3 unblocked, or get a point of life back, effectively making him hit for 1 that turn. However, you MUST do this every time he does damage, including when he's blocked, so more often than not you'll be able to get a point of life loss out even if he is blocked - so as long as you get off one attack, you are basically guaranteed one point of life loss. An interesting creature, but there are many better, more reliable creatures. It does however, have several relevant creature types - the addition of Warrior means he can now wield Obsidian Battle-Axe too. He can also come into play off of Preeminent Captain attacks. As with all black/white creatures, a good target for Edge of the Divinity. An interesting card with a unique ability that makes you think a little more than most commons, and with such a unique set of creature types.

By the way, if you're a fan of black/white common lifegain off of combat damage, you might like Mourning Thrull as well.
